Mother to be, sucking on a cigarette, is concerned about how the noise from jackhammers will effect her unborn child...

Un-frikin-believable.
Sorry this borders on a vanity (which I tend to object to), but I think many FReepers can appreciate this bewildering display.

You have to admire her ingenuity for seeking financial sources.

I worry about the effect of her stupidity on her unborn child. The effects of smoking during pregnancy are well documented.
What a pig!
To: Mears
So, you think it's perfectly OK to smoke while pregnant? Would you recommend your daughter or daughter in law smoke while pregnant with your grandchildren?
If not, why not? Please explain.

So she smokes! So what!As well as I did. Gave birth to a 10 on the Apgar Scale, 8.12 pound, 21 and a half inches long baby girl!
I was born into a smoking family. Didn't hurt me. The same with hubby. We were lucky not to have the Nanny's and the Anti's back then. Thank God!

If not, why not? Please explain.I can jump in here as well. I smoked, still smoke. Daughter grew into a beautiful gal who has a babe of her own now. My daughter is strong as an ox, working out at the gym 3-4 times a week since she was a teen-ager. Smoking hasn't slowed her down one bit.
She and her hubby both smoke, with all the anti's out there, they do not smoke around their son. That's what Social Services has done today. Threaten smokers with losing their kids if they are caught smoking around the offspring.

I could care less if they smoke while pregnant, one did.
Smoking didn't harm my kids and smoking didn't harm my grandaughter.
I don't care if they have an occasional alcoholic beverage or drink coffee either.
Too many scare tactics today.

26 years ago, our Ob/Gyn told my wife she could continue to smoke as it would help keep the baby small, thereby minimizing the fracturing (really splitting) of her hips. At 5.5 lbs, he was right.

The point is she is an absolute moron. Worrying about jackhammer noise and what it might do to her unborn child, yet caring none about what smoking will do to it.

The extent of your "so what" depends in large part on whether you are the Mother, or the Father :-)
You stated "most of us did then". I guess the question is; knowing what you do today, would you behave that way today?
In any case, the potential for damage is there and I am glad to hear your children grew up healthy.

I quit when I got pregnant with my first and didn't start up again until my second was almost 2. I don't regret quitting, but I sometimes really wonder if it was worth it. My aunt smoked for all three of her kids. The first was a perfectly normal, healthy, 10 pound boy. The second was a tiny little girl. ("Tiny" in my family is a relative thing. At 6.75 lbs, *that* was a tiny baby to us. 10 pounders are the norm.) The third was a 12+ pound monster that ended up playing highschool football in Texas. She always thanks God that she smoked because she couldn't have handled babies any bigger than they already were.
My best friend smoked with both of hers and they're both exceptionally big kids with IQs over 170. (The girl is 5'4" at 10 and the boy is 5'8" at 13. He already has several full-ride scholarships lined up and he's not even into highschool yet.)
