Excerpts....
The Kerry end is near? At this precise time every four years, the most media-savvy members of the Gang of 500 begin to think about their roles in the premiere post-election forum that revisits the actions and players of the presidential race.
But if nothing changes in the race as it now stands with President Bush winning a decent-sized victory much of the talk will be about the greater technical proficiency of the Bush-Cheney effort.
Democrats, who deny up and down that they had anything to do with the documents, tell ABC News that they plan to continue their push to question the president's Guard service, irrespective of the CBS situation.
Top Democrats vow to continue to lead the charge against Bush along these four lines
1. Bush allegedly got special treatment
2. Bush allegedly was suspended for missing his medical exam
3. Bush allegedly didn't fulfill his requirements
4. Bush allegedly didn't release all the documents he said he'd release
But they acknowledge that it might be more difficult to break through the clutter of questions surrounding the documents' authenticity. (Guess they won't heed BC's advice?)
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos said on "Good Morning America" that "a lot of Democrats think this might have been a set-up" by Republicans a sentiment we are likely to hear more of in the days to come.
(ABC acknowledges Freepers broke the story...yeah boy)
We always favor looking at the content and substance over WHO is offering up the information, but in the war that will ensue about WHO gave CBS the potentially phony documents, it is interesting to Note that the right (Drudge, Fox, right-leaning blogs, others) led the way in pointing out the questions we have all been asking and they were onto the questions, with remarkable detail, relatively soon after the documents were made public.
Here's part of how this story got here . . . from a little Marc Ambinder back-lurking on the blogs . . .
At 8:00 pm ET Wednesday night, CBS News does the story . . .
at 8:59 ET before the broadcast is finished!!! the documents come into question via a poster named Buckhead on the Free Republic Web site: LINK http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1210662/posts
Buckhead seems well-read on his forensic document examination skills. "Howlin, every single one of these memos to file is in a proportionally spaced font, probably Palatino or Times New Roman. In 1972 people used typewriters for this sort of thing, and typewriters used monospaced fonts. The use of proportionally spaced fonts did not come into common use for office memos until the introduction of laser printers, word processing software, and personal computers. They were not widespread until the mid to late 90's. Before then, you needed typesetting equipment, and that wasn't used for personal memos to file. Even the Wang systems that were dominant in the mid 80's used monospaced fonts. I am saying these documents are forgeries, run through a copier for 15 generations to make them look old."
Well, this is bandied about by dozens of Freepers, as they're called and is picked up at 8:30 am ET and added to by www.littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/ this little green football guy is a very popular conservative blogger . . .
It's expanded upon by www.powerlineblog.com/ in the early morning:
and also by www.spacetownusa.com/hmmm
and here, at 10:36 am ET: www.allahpundit.com/.
snip The Boston Globe does not get into the debate about the documents, focusing instead on the full-throated DNC push on Bush's service. LINK
A New York Times editorial on the new documents and Bush's Guard service does include a reference to the documents' authenticity being challenged. LINK
The White House lobs claims that the Kerry team is behind attacks on Bush's military service record. The Washington Times ' Bill Sammon reports White House press secretary Scott McClellan describes it as desperate measures for desperate times. "You absolutely are seeing a coordinated attack by John Kerry and his surrogates on the president." LINK
And let us not be the last to point out that if a(nother) major corporation was withholding information related to serious allegations made against the president of the United States, "60 Minutes" would be all over them, demanding to know about their documentation and expert back up.
After you throw the "CHUM" into the water do you use a "spinner"?
Great analogy....chum usually being the cast offs, trash, craps and scraps of meat. The fish farmers equivilent of hog slop!!!!!!!!!
Here on this forum, the Free Republic, we just have average Citizens, asking questions about Documents, trained Journalist should of asked.
And running them through a typesetter would not have yielded such a good fit for Times New Roman.
Indeed, even if one had a goofy desire to use a proportional font, one could at least have used something obscure. If the documents used a proportionally-spaced font that was untraceable, one could argue that, for some goofy reason, Killian had them typeset. Bizarre, but not impossible. But there's no way they'd be typeset in a font that so perfectly matches one that didn't yet exist.
I think your missing what is happening. The Clinton Hit Machine has been activated for an all out push to discredit Kerry. and get that fool (not my opinion theirs, I think Bush is a political genius and a great war President), Bush, elected.
Then Kerry is even dumber than I thought he was. The train of thought in your argument runs something like this:
Hillary wants to be Pres. She figures she doesn't have much time to wait. She can't allow Kerry to win and then re-run in '08, because she can't wait until 2012. So, Bill The Rat calls JF'n Kerry and says he can send in Carville, et al to help pull his [Kerry's] campaign out of the crap hole that its in. Kerry, being the gullible fool that he is, agrees. Kerry plays his hand with a phony memo, moves even further left to energize his base, and the rest is history - President Bush gets reelected in a landslide, Hillary gets to run for the nomination in '08. If true, Kerry is the dumbest SOB in the country.
Welcome aboard!
I've been around for quite awhile. Even though it has gotten negative at times and we sometimes eat our own....I knew this site was making a difference. We just proved it!
Yep. Don't worry if they are "real", just read what they say...
His wife and son said that no files existed that they knew of. Basically, a CBS flunky called them to plant the idea that the CBS was looking for these "files" while some flunky at the DNC or "Texans for truth" was busy typing up the "files" in MS word, while, presumably reading a book of USAF acronyms to make the "files" look authentic. Needless to say, the plan did not work out too well...
That's about it.
Lets go a little bit further. Kerry is hooked into going with the phony documents because the CLintonista's tell Kerry Dan Rather is on board and will run with the story on 60 Minutes and make it the lead story on the CBS Evening News as long as it has traction. If it looses traction Rather will apologize and bury the story. There is no possibility of damage to Kerry. Kerry jumps in with both feet.
Almost overnight the authenticity of the documents are challenged by experts from all over the US. It's pretty obvious the documents are phony and won't fly with the public. Kerry doesn't worry assuming Rather will apologize and move on to the Kitty Kelly book.
Now comes to good part. Rather insists the documents are authentic while at the same time admitting the document are photocopies, probably photocopies of photocopies of photocopies. Rather won't back off brings in a handwriting analyst to verify Killian's signature on a photocopy. The signature is the easy part of the documents to transfer from an original and authenticate. The expert addresses no other part of the document. The expert also turns out to be somebody who analyzed Courtney Loves husband's suicide note as well as Vince Foster's. Whoops the handwriting expert is connected to the Clintonista's.
So Rather continues to push the story and Kerry is being damaged every hour it continues and he has noway to stop Rather.
Yep, Kerry is the dumbest SOB in the country.
It does seem somewhat plausible; but why do a hatchet job on Kerry now? It was clear that Kerry was not going to win anyway. Why take a chance that the whole thing might blow up like a manure bomb and some of the crap might stick to Hillary and Bill, thus damaging Hillary's chances for a later run at the White House? And then to top it all off, the morons bring in the same "expert" that they used to stave off a murder investigation in the Foster case. Not only would Kerry have to be the dumbest SOB in the country, but so would the majority of the population of the US! Still, I like your take on the whole episode. The Clintons are evil enough to set the whole thing up. And that would also make Dan Rather pretty stupid, to boot!

Compare one of the Jerry Killian memos given to CBS News,
and allegedly produced in 1972, to the same text created using MS
Word 2002. A person who wishes to remain anonymous forwarded a
link to me for an animated presentation which overlaps the two
documents and shows, using a current font, how tab spacing and
inter-line spacing match the defaults in Microsoft's Word.

It isn't enough for Kerry to just lose. Kerry and Edwards have to be eliminated in 2004 as viable candidates in 2008. The bigger the margin of victory for Bush the better it will be for Hillary post Election Day.
There isn't any chance of it blowing up unless the media was interested in pursuing the story, They won't.
Dan Rather once said of the Clinton's, Mr. President, if we could be one-one-hundredth as great as you and Hillary Rodham Clinton have been together in the White House, we'd take it right now and walk away winners ...
In Dan's mine putting these 2 back in the White House means he can walk away a winner which is why he is willing participant in this up to his neck.
MY GOSH!
This just seems about right!
You may have nailed it.
Somehow, someway, someone or some group should figure out a way to FORCE CBS to explain where these memos came from....FIND THAT OUT....and you have the horror of this misinformation attempt NAILED DOWN!
Agreed- ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
