Me too. If the White House had caught this before the 60 minutes piece aired, it could have saved a lot of negative publicity. I am afraid that the accusations will float, but the later retractions won't even break public consciousness. That is usually the way these things work. Hopefully I am wrong.

You're definitely wrong. First, the initial story was a big nothing. Even if the memos are authentic there is nothing in there that hurts Bush. My guess is if they were toyed with, Gary Killian's guess that they are a blend of "fact and fiction" is correct and any tweaking was done to give the memos spinnability.

But the public does not perceive GWB as a liar despite the best attempts by the LSM and the dems to paint him as such. If these are indeed forged it most definitely will break public consciousness and will backfire big time on the dems and disgusting CBS.

Good for you.
I was just thinking that Pete Yost was the one chosen for the AP story on this. He's been in the Dems' pockets ever since his impeachment reporting (before that he wasn't too bad).

We've got to hammer home the links between the 'methods' of CBS and the Jayson Blair scandal, Stephen Glass, etc. They would never have leapt so recklessly and uncritically to trumpet fraudulent documents which SUPPORT Bush or UNDERMINE Senator John Freakface Kerry!

This should turn into the Watergate of the major media.

A spell checker in 1974? Memory, even ROM, was incredibly expensive back then. Not disputing your word, just incredulous.

Hmmm, smart pixilating characters, a shortcut created for fax machines.... Lets look at that superscript TH again. If it was converted in scanning, it would always be converted in scanning & one of the docs has it both ways.

Also too, that signature smells bad to me, now that I've seen on example of a known signature. Another of my former lives was as a bank teller AND a secretary we hired forged my signature on a bunch of checks, so I've had a little bit of experience in the area (though I'm no expert). I said in another post, on another thread, the first thing you wanna do to check the authenticity of a signature is turn both of your examples upside down. The flow, angles, natural spacing of letters pops out at you as different, unless your forger is very, very good.

My family had an IBM Executive in the late '60s the had proportional type. These were not the replaceable ball, or wheel type of machines. It had the old style keys and used plastic ribbon and "lift off" tape for error correction. Because of the plastic ribbon it produced very clean type.

I've dug around and found a copy of a document that I typed with it that I signed and dated May 5, 1971. The font and spacing is NOTHING like that in the documents produced by CBS. Not even close.

I can't believe someone thought they could get away with such an obvious fraud.

According to the man that wrote the book on typewriter fonts (catalogued over 4000, regarded as "the expert" on typewritten documents), this font (Times New Roman) didn't exist as a typewriter font.

If there is anything the alphabets like to do more than carry the Democrat's water, it's proving each other wrong.

I'm sure Jennings was very torn over supporting the DNC or blasting Rather out of the water.

Demand they apologize for this EXTREME lapse of journalistic practice and basic skills.

This requires more than just an apology. The only incident even remotely of this magnitude was the Operation Tailwind fabrication that CNN ran several years ago. That cost Peter Arnett and April Oliver, the segment's producer, their jobs.

That was bad enough, but this makes the Tailwind scandal look like small potatoes. We should settle for nothing less than Dan Rather's and Andrew Heyward's resignations. And if these aren't forthcoming, then we should demand that Sumner Redstone personally fire these two assclowns.

The only way to do a th on a selectric ...

Not Selectric. No way. As many posts here have expressed, the IBM typewriter that is capable of proportional spacing is the "Executive," not the "Selectric."

The argument that the document is not a forgery says that teh typewriter was an "Executive" model, and it is not sensible to rebut that by describing what a "Selectric" model can and can't do.

I'm not taking the side that the document is genuine, just pointing out the logic of this particular angle of argument.

Response from Yosts office: Appreciate the e-mail. We are pursuing Kerry's Vietnam war records.

I think these particular documents came from a single source, done very, very badly.

It isn't the fraud--it is that this was "believed" and "reported" as news without vetting.

I doubt there are more fraudulent documents. Kerry's people are creepy and dumb, but they aren't the low-powered morons who passed this funky stuff off on CBS.

The Executive still didn't have a way to make the "th" smaller, it would have been the same size, just rolled up using the paten.

The pathetic thing to me is that the media ITSELF should've had this database of old typewriter fonts on file. I mean, how much foresight does that take? How many typewriters were there? How many fonts were there? Not that many! They could store it all on one floppy disk! So much for journalistic brilliance.

"I think the line of defense has been hinted at by some on these threads. CBS will claim that they re-did the docs for air because they were difficult to read in their original form."

'Course if they are able to produce the "originals" There is the pesky fact that the paper composition of the "originals" can be checked to see if the composition matches the paper in use in the early 70's. OOOOPPPPPS

"They really couldn't come out and yell that they were forgeries because it would make them look guilty " Why is that? At any rate, they didn't have to yell. They could have just phoned up CBS and told them they were forgeries, and that they would expose them as such if CBS used them.

Politically if you deny a bogus charge you give more life to it. Let's say the Whtie House issued a press release saying that the docuements were forgeries. The main stream media would only report that they said they were forgeries...they wouldn't investigate or report any of the details of what MAKES them forgeries. To the general public it would look like the White House got caught with their pants down and are trying to deny it...or at least that's the spin the press would give it.

CBS is *never* going to run a favorable story on Bush, or at best it will be one favorable story to 100 negative stories. The White House wanted to get CBS as much as the dems...so they let us citizen reporters push the story and expose these documents for what they are fakes. The evidence is overwhelming that they're fake. Now the press has a choice....there a few million people on the 'net who KNOW they're fakes. So what can the press do? If you're FOX you report the truth. If you're CBS you keep your mouth shut. If you're NBC, you hedge your bets and say that the documents may be fake.

Dang. I had several old Selectrics lying around when I decided to move out East. I got rid of them. I could have set up some kind of a lab for this.
