THE "New" CBS BUSH DOCUMENTS: Let's do some investigating
www.freerepublic.com | September 9, 2004

Posted on 09/08/2004 9:16:02 PM PDT by Howlin

These are the NEW documents "discovered" by CBS with conjunction with their Ben Barnes expose/confessional tonight regarding George Bush's National Guard service.

They've gotten some interesting comments on the Live Thread, so I thought I'd give them their own thread so you people out there with the knowledge can dissect them for their accuracy/truth/existence.

That's the one. The executive secretary at the first construction company I worked for had one and she guarded it ferociously. It would take her most of the day to do a report. It was NOT the sort of machine that was used for everyday work, especially memos.

Different typewriters or typists? I think that would indicate the Lt Col had these memos typed up by a clerk....Just thinking out loud, why would an officer have memos to himself typed by a clerk, to include the typed letterhead? If not to himself, than where were these memos supposed to go to?

Where is the clerk now?

The reason to think that these documents were written (or forged, it remains to be established) on a typewriter using a ribbon. Work from a computer printer would not show a difference in weight or heaviness of different letters, which these documents do.

Just to add to the information stack -- the current address of the 111th is 14657 Sneider St ... which is located on Ellington Field. This is also listed on the official website ---> http://www.ang.af.mil/units/angsites.asp?state=TX ...
Now I know that things change over the years, but I thought I would throw that out there.

Check out the link on #105-- doesn't look like the Composer I used. Mine was HUGE.

Clerks *always* typed their initials on memos that they wrote up for their bosses.

There are no initials on the bottom of the first "memo" (didn't bother with the rest of the forgeries).

The IBM "Selectric" Composer was the first desktop typesetting machine. It was based on the successful "Selectric" technology. In case you're not familiar with that, the IBM Selectric typewriter is the one that has a small ball with all the letters imprinted on it.

The basic task of the IBM Composer was to produce justified camera ready copy using proportional fonts. It has the capability of using a variety of font sizes and styles. The first IBM Composer was the IBM "Selectric" Composer announced in 1966. It was a hybrid "Selectric" typewriter that was modified to have proportional spaced fonts. It is 100% mechanical and has no digital electronics. Since it has no memory, the user was required to type everything twice. While typing the text the first time, the machine would measure the length of the line and count the number of spaces. When the user finished typing a line of text, they would record special measurements into the right margin of the paper. Once the entire column of text was typed and measured, it would then be retyped, however before typing each line, the operator would set the special justification dial (on the right side) to the proper settings, then type the line. The machine would automatically insert the appropriate amount of space between words so that all of the text would be justified.

Yep, normaly you got your flight physical during your birth month, but it depended on when ya got your first one.

Flight physicals were reguired annually and I don't think you could go more then 30 days, if that, overdue

Didn't president Bush origionaly join the guard in April, '68?

and all the first letter did was tell him to show up at the unit admin within 10 days to set up a physical

Good point. Perhaps the man typed his own memos?

Holy Smoking Gun! Somebody slipped up by allowing the word processor to automatically print a superscript. No superscript in the header. How very sweet!

"The reason to think that these documents were written (or forged, it remains to be established) on a typewriter using a ribbon. Work from a computer printer would not show a difference in weight or heaviness of different letters, which these documents do."

One of the posters earlier in this thread made a pretty convincing case that the size difference of the same "A" would indicate a cut n paste graphical job, using a digital photo of a real document as a starter (which would explain why there aren't obvious corrections on the forgeries that were commonplace on old, typewritten real documents).

Thats exactly correct. The typists initials were like a notary's seal. Even on memos.

Yeah I could been more clear, but the idea is killian was having an imaginary phone discussion since Bush had already cleared out for AL, which means he had found a unit to accept him and the Killian memo says Bush is looking for a unit to accept him. Just doesn't jib. Who ever wrote this didn't really talk to W!

How can they attribute something that is unsigned?

http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/BushGuardaugust18.pdf
http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/BushGuardmay19.pdf

Why are the two signatures different?

Something smells here.

Exactly what I was thinking. AND there is no way this guy would type it himself. If his clerk typed it, it would have the initials of the clerk and the initials of the writer at the bottom. These were things that were ALWAYS done and NEVER skipped (by someone who could operate that machine)

Thanks. It would seem to me that procedural inconsistencies might be as valuable in detecting these as forgeries. So we have the apparently extraordinary failure to copy the appropriate people.

As has been pointed out and asked, is it standard procedure to produce your letterhead with each correspondence?

May I suggest something?

Don't waste your time! Keep your eye on the ball!

This is one of several distractions born of utter desperation at the Kerry campaign and ditched up (again) because their campaign and candidate are devoid of any sellable message. People recognize these smears for what they are and realize their utter irrelevancy. If that was not the case, in general, GHWB #41 would have won a second term and we'd call Bob Dole "President" instead of "Senator" today.

Seriously, there is no need to distract attention nor give these series of smears anything other than what they deserve (a quick dump into the DNC trashcan). The relevant issues on the table are:
#1 discussion of the issue brought up by VP Cheney, that the decision on election day is truly one involving life and death, with two different approaches to the war on terror - 1 focused on an offensive, preemptive strategy to take out the terrorists before they get us and the other - with a record of weakness and outright opposition to defense - promising to respond in some way after subsequent attacks (with approval of France & UN of course).
#2 is the positive, forward looking & in many cases innovative agenda put forth by President Bush compared to the totally pathetic campaign presented by Hanoi John French Kerry which is liberal to the hilt with higher taxes across the board.
#3 is the SwiftVet revelations and outstanding issues. Unlike Bush, whose undergone the same rectal exam for the third campaign now, Kerry has still not answered a single question about his exploits in Cambodia or his friend with the magic hat, nor has he allowed for the release of his record which the navy currently has under investigation with no such formal cloud facing Bush.

Don't fall for the Kerry campaign redirection. They are on the ropes and the good guys cannot afford to be distracted now. :)
