Now we know explosives were involved because there is physical evidence. Just because a witness said they saw an explosion doesn't mean it happened. I'm sure there's at least one witness out there that says they didn't see an explosion, but we have the trace elements, so we know that witness is wrong. Of course the ones that say they saw an explosion could be wrong too, we'll never know if they actually were looking at the right spot in the sky or not, maybe they were tying their shoe and didn't see a damn thing.

DEBKAfile Special and Exclusive Report
August 25, 2004, 2:33 PM (GMT+02:00)
Updated 27 August:
Forty-eight hours after two Russian Tupolev airliners took off from Moscow airport minutes apart and crashed, killing all 89 people aboard, al Qaeda has finally come forward with a claim of responsibility, published by the Islamic Minbar website associated with the Islamist organization. The statement, signed by the "Islambuli Brigades" (named for the killer of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat) claims two groups of five men each hijacked the planes and promises to circulate soon a video clip showing the "martyrs" reading out their last wills and testaments. The statement adds that the attacks were the first in a series and there are more operations to come.

MOSCOW, Aug. 30, 2004
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(AP) They lived in the same apartment in Chechnya, worked in the same market and may have died within moments of each other on separate airliners that crashed in Russia last week.

"Moscow fears two suicide bombers at large"
By Andrew Osborn in Moscow
31 August 2004
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Fears were growing yesterday that two "black widows" - female Chechen suicide bombers - were on the loose in Moscow, less than a week after two passenger airliners were blown out of the sky.
The two prime suspects in last week's explosions have been identified as the Chechens Amant Nagaeva and Satsita Dzhebirkhanova. Both had lost brothers in Chechnya's hostilities with Russia. Remains of the women's bodies were found in the wreckage of both planes, along with traces of a high explosive favoured by Chechen separatists. Eighty-nine people died in the almost simultaneous explosions.
The daily Izvestia reported yesterday that the two women did not travel to Moscow alone. The newspaper said that they had come with two other Chechen women with whom they had been living in Grozny, Chechnya's capital, Maryam Taburova and Roza Nagaeva (Amant's sister)."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The passengers and the crew of a plane from an Egypt resort to Moscow refused to fly when two Chechen women tried to get on board.
The Egyptian authorities asked to let the women get on the plane, Trud newspaper wrote. The crew was terrified by the last disasters in Russia. The pilots said the Chechens behaved suspiciously. They locked themselves in the toilet right after they had got on board, the paper quoted the pilots as saying.
The crew demanded the women to leave the plane that flew from Sharm al-Sheykh with two-hour delay."

"?Moscow Police Arrest Plane-Bombing Suspects"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "7 September 2004 -- Moscow police have arrested two suspects over the blowing up of two Russian airplanes last month that killed 89 people.
An official at the Prosecutor General's Office refused to disclose the names of the suspects or details about the arrests.
Russian news agencies said one of the suspects, identified as Armen Arutyunov from the southern Krasnodar region, was arrested yesterday at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport. He allegedly acknowledged selling seats on board the planes to two women suspected of blowing up the airliners and also helped them evade security controls, although he claimed not to have known of their plans."

"Chechen rebel claims Beslan siege"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Shamil Basayev has a $10m bounty on his head
Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev has said he organised the Russian school siege in which at least 320 hostages were killed, many of them children.
In a letter published by leading rebel websites, he said a suicide battalion had carried out the Beslan attack.
The letter also claimed bomb attacks on two Russian airliners and a Moscow metro station this summer.
Russia is offering $10m for the capture of Mr Basayev, whose reported actions a US official described as "inhuman"."

"Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev claims responsibility for recent terrorist attacks in Russia"
09/17/2004 11:43
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "According to Basayev, the attack in Beslan cost him 8,000 euros
Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev claimed responsibility for explosions in Moscow, including the recent blast near the Rizhskaya metro station, the air crashes of the Tu-154 and Tu-134 airliners and the hostage crisis in Beslan, according to a Chechen terrorist website.
"The group Riyadus-Salikhin has conducted a series of successful operations on the territory of Russia. The explosions on the Kashirskoye Highway and near the Rizhskaya metro station were organized by the Moscow regional division of Shakhids. The two air crashes were organized by the special operations department. The operation Nord-West in the town of Beslan was carried out by the second battalion of Shakhids, under the command of Colonel Orstkhoev," a statement from Basayev runs.
It was Chechen terrorist Shamil Basayev, who set up the Islamic battalion of Shakhids, Riyadus-Salikhin. According to Russian special services, Basayev organized terrorist acts in Budennovsk in 1995 (when terrorists took hundreds hostage at a local hospital) and in Moscow in 2002 (the hostage crisis at the Moscow music theatre).
In the middle of July, Basayev announced that new operations were being prepared to cause serious damage to federal forces both militarily and politically."
