The gun won't shoot until the trigger is actually pulled. other guns may shoot when the gun is dropped, the hammer falls...etc. Glocks won't shoot unless that tiny part of the trigger is pulled. If you find your finger on the trigger when you are holstering, you will hear a bang...then a certain amount of pain.

what this safety is supposed to do.

Protect various people and agencies from lawyers. That's it.

It's a lawsuit protection device.

A much more effective safety would have been a grip safety, which is included on the springfield XD series of polymer guns.

a branch catches the trigger,

If you have it in a proper holster (preferably Kydex) nothing will reach the trigger.

I remeber about 10 or more yrs. ago there were a few accidental shootings involving Police Officers shooting and sometimes killing thier victims. As it turned out, the trigger was a hair-pin trigger often going off by accident while the cop was running in pursuit of the suspect. After these incidents I think they changed the brand of guns.

Just keep your finger off the trigger until you see the mullah and you'll be all right.

Don't take this as a flame, because it isn't...

You don't own a gun, do you?

I am a retired cop and I carried a Colt .45 ACP for about 20 of my 31 years of service.

I fired a Glock a few times and that monkey-motion trigger gives me the willies.

I have read that the NYPD has had some problem with accidental discharges with Glocks.

That's what that little thingy is on my Glocks. Thanks for the info. All this time I thouht the "safety" was unloading it and then taking it apart.

I am the only one that finds that little trigger safety thingy is a pain in the ... finger?

Springfield Armory or a Para-Ordinance .45 with a double stack magazine. Works for me just fine.

Just a few more weeks, does anyone know if H&K will make high cap mags for their USP .45?

There are actually two safeties on the trigger. The internal safety prevents the firing pin from moving forward unless the trigger is depressed. The external safety prevents the trigger from moving backward unless there is pressure on the trigger's front face; dropping the gun on its backstrap won't cause an accidental discharge simply because of trigger inertia.

<nag_mode>

Like any other safety design, these are mechanical devices and can break. A broken safety does not guarantee a nonfunctional firearm. Never rely on a safety to prevent a gun from causing damage, injury, or death. Only safe gun handling can do that.

I don't like Glocks and I don't like trigger safeties.

I remember the cop near here who's 3 year old killed him when the cop laid his loaded Glock and holster on the table as he went to hug mommy when he came off shift.

forget daddy he's moved on but one day that kid will know what happened...whew!

call me a wuss...I prefer a bit more safety or a true wheelgun (SA)

a) yes...the cop was dumb

b) if you're in injun cuntry, the safety's off anyhow...at least mine is.

But, having dug my own hole disparaging Glocks on this forum...I would like to emphatically state that they are fine for folks who like them..but to me a trigger safety ain't much of a safety.

OK..everybody gets's free shots to my chin..lol

The trigger on my combat tupperware reminds me of the old toy rubber tip dart guns. Dry firing a glock is the very same trigger feel and sound......kind of a "SPOING" thang !

Yes I had a quality toy rubber dart pistol.....:o)

Stay safe !

Why is this posted under "News/Activism"?

What are you going to do, a political shooting with your glock?

The little trigger safety thingie ensures that it only fires from a firm full pull on the whole trigger - not if something just catches the side or corner of the trigger.

To answer your question, the "safety" prevents discharge when a branch presses the main portion of the trigger, but does not prevent discharge when a branch presses the safety lever of the trigger.

Imagine trying the fire the gun (clamped in a vise) with a loop of string. If would be hard to get the string to rest on just the right spot of the trigger safety. I suspect that it the idea, so that non-finger-sized objects are unlikely to fire the gun.

I prefer a DA/SA setup that has a heavy first shot pull, and light pull for later shots.
