A much more effective safety would have been a grip safety, which is included on the springfield XD series of polymer guns.

The Glock system is just the Colt grip safety moved to the Glocks trigger. A series 80 Colt 1911 has a grip safety, a firing pin safety and a manual safety. It all works fine.

John Browning got it right back in 1911. If it "ain't broke" don't fix it
