Captains are used to having their way, and not having their ships searched. Beginning today, the Coast Guard is searching all ships of foreigh flag. It appears that this captain got miffed when his ship was being searched and told the CG "not to go in there, it will expload". They are now taking the ship out to sea to search it real good.

Just another isolated incident.

Actually, the term "master" could legitimately refer to the individual in charge of navigation, at least under British naval nomenclature. The master was/is a warrant officer serving the captain. At least that's what I read a while back when looking at various historical ranking structures. That would be the ship's "sailing master."
"Master and Commander" would be the correct title for the captain.

Jacob Tomaloo is not spelled right or something. That name does not come up on my ships regestry.

FNC reports that the Captain now says that he was just kidding about a bomb being on board, because he was angered because they were searching his ship in port. (You guys sure make fun of a potential serious situation).
Reckon what the penalty is for that?

(Thanks, Mel. I needed that.)

If this turns out to be a joke, the joker needs some prison and the ship held until the entire expense of scrambling all our security elements is paid.

"Might be just me, but I'd have figured a ships master was the person in charge of the cargo, and the captain was the person in charge of the ship."
The Chief Mate is in charge of the cargo, the Master is in charge of the ship overall. In european usage the Chief Mate is called the First Officer.

"Might be just me, but I'd have figured a ships master was the person in charge of the cargo, and the captain was the person in charge of the ship."And now for another take... I always thought "Ship's Master" was a title and "Captain" was a rank. A slight distinction but one would be referred to as, let's say Ship's Master, Captain Merrill Stubing...

Ship's name is " Jacob Tomaloo". Docked at the Port of Phili this morning. Boarded at the Port by Coast Guard, based on previous concerns for this particular ship. Captain refused to allow search of certain areas and threatened explosions. Team of FBI officials on the way to go over ship off shore. If I'd been there: "Captain now sports a .45 inch a$$hole between his eyes, search proceeding."

That is how it sounded to my Texas ear. Try other variations. Jakob. Tamalu. Tawmaloo. I will keep looking for written sources of the name.

From website turks.us Saturday, July 26 2003 @ 10:16 AM Central Daylight Time
Brussels, BELGIUM, July 26, 2003 - Following the Erika and Prestige tanker disasters, the European Union (EU) yesterday issued another warning to member and candidate countries to obey regulations.
Turkey is first on the European Union's black list of high risk cargo vessels. Of 112 ships, 36 Turkish were found to be first in the 'very high risk' class.
In a statement made by the EU when the Erika I statutes went into effect on July 22, if any of the sea transportation vehicles on the list do not comply with regulations and registers another offence, entry and exit to European ports will be prohibited.
The list consists of three risk groups: middle, high and very high. All 36 Turkish ships were found to be in the very high risk group. Observers in Brussels say that Turkey can increase the security of its sea fleet in a very short time by adhering to EU regulations. If Turkey does not comply, it is warned that Turkish seamanship could suffer serious consequences.

every tanker and freighter that enters a US port is guided there by an American pilot who comes on board and takes over, and that these pilots typically get on the ship quite a long way from any ports or cities. Thanks for that info.
