"Bergler should be sent out first on every ship or plane bomb threat!!!!"

Yeah. He can carry his boarding documents in his socks, so his hands are free for his cell phone.

It is probably not a bomb, just a bag of hamburgers in a McDonald's bag.

Apparently they had been tracking it before it entered territorial waters (12 miles). Why wouldn't they stop it at 12 miles?

Actually the pilot comes on board out in the ocean, just outside Delaware Bay, and a good 125 miles away from Philadelphia. Conceivable that the "pilot" was confused with "ship's master" somehow.

As far as I know the pilot comes on board alone and unarmed. There would be absolutely nothing to stop a terrorists for forcing the pilot to crash the ship or just killing the pilot and doing it himself.

As per Fox, the Captain is refusing a boarding to allow a search.

He'll change his mind when a SEAL shoves a gun down his throat.

Which means it's either affiliated with a terrorist group, or involved in drugs/arms trafficking, or both. Very few alternatives. And very brazen to try for a U.S. port.

It may be loaded with,...'biographies'......

Actually, the term "master" could legitimately refer to the individual in charge of navigation, at least under British naval nomenclature.

Oooh, can't have that. Remember the Left Coast Town Council which objected to computer servers being tagged "master" and "slave"? Gotta be politically correct, don-cha know.

The captain probably got frustrated with security and made some joking comment about a bomb, and then when he realized that this would trigger an automatic (heavy) response, tried to back down and get them to leave him alone. Either way, he's got lots of 'splainin to do.

Exactly.

LOL! Speaking of PC, if a woman held the title, would it be ship's mistress, and if so, since ships are female, would they both be lesbians? Have I had enough to drink yet?

My guess is they were suspicious of the vessel and planned to board it all along. Perhaps suspecting stowaways, various weapons, but not a bomb. Upon the bomb threat, they took the sucker back out to sea.

No, they're th same thing. The ship's master is in charge of the ship, crew and cargo, at sea and in port and responsible for the welfare of the crew, the crew's conduct and for making sure that all laws are followed during the voyage.

And, I assume the Navy has at least a destroyer on the way with adequate gun power to sink the vessel.

Perhaps the United States Military should hold a demonstration of the maxim, "The captain always goes down with the ship."

Ship master and the term captain are one and the same in this usage. Master is a more formal term on merchant vessels indicating an international legal status of being the owners representative (or owner)and able to incur liens on the vessel. The crews articles of engagement (work contract) are with the master. There is a lot of authority and responsibility in maritime law for a master. The master's license uses the term "master". Military Navy (as apposed to the term merchant navy) captains do not have the same legal relationship to their crew. A navy crew's contract is with the navy/government. A person operating a small boat can be called a captain (as they often like to be refered to).
