Law-enforcement officials in the U.S. say they've seen an increase in hate crimes as Muslims grapple with harassment believed to have been prompted by beheadings in Iraq, Saudi Arabia
Through all the tense moments since the Sept. 11 attacks, Samar Jarrah thought her small Islamic community in Port Charlotte, Fla., had remained at peace with its non-Muslim neighbors.
The town's Muslim doctors often treat homeless and impoverished immigrants free of charge. And Jarrah went out of her way to teach residents about Islam, sometimes giving talks two or three times a week in synagogues and churches.
But three weeks ago, a caller left a message on the mosque's answering machine at the Islamic Community of Southwest Florida, shattering the perception of harmony with the community: "You barbarians. Lucky to be alive." Then the caller warned that if any attacks occurred in the United States, he would retaliate.

Crank calls, graffitti, and moronic notes taped to a mailbox are the "hate crimes" the author alludes to. Color me unimpressed . . .
I don't see any mosques burning. To call these incidents "hate crimes" further dilutes the definition of an already questionable phrase.
These "Islamic communities" are scattered all over Florida, in the most unlikely little towns - probably many of them were established by Sami Al Arian's group, which certainly established those that are at Florida universities.
They seem to be buying up little churches and turning them into mosques, which I assume is mostly a symbolic gesture. It's hard to imagine that these small towns even have a Muslim population. But it's rather unnerving to drive by some isolated little white building that had probably formerly been a Pentecostal church and see the inevitably green Arabic writing over the doorway.
Aren't all crimes "hate crimes?" When was the last time you heard a perp say that he broke into a house, tied up the owners, and then robbed them of their valuables because he loved them?
Exactly!
I have a brother in India who was marveling at the religious tolerence there.
I had to remind him that I've never heard of a baptist killing a protestant here in greenville!
America is the land of tolerance
Huge muslim population in Chicago, so of course, they'd print this whether they have facts or not.
I'm not buying it.
However, I can't say it won't be coming if they continue to harbor terrorists.
I'm frankly depressed to see signs in ANY language other than English here in the USA, always have been.
But yep, Arabic would bother me in a specific way. Particularly in a town with which I have any "history."

Solid thinking. Have you seen my rant on border control?
Islam IS a pagan religion. Mohammed wanted a way to unite the Arabs under his control so he could conquer Arabia and then the world. He realized creating a religion that granted booty to his rapacious, murderous horde was a way to do so. He simply picked al-lah, the moon god from the pagan pantheon of gods and only decided to have one god to lull the Jews and Christians into believing he worshiped God.
"The beheadings seem to be a deciding factor," said Kareem Irfan, head of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago. "People who have been sitting on the fence now say, `I have made up my mind. Muslims around us somehow have to be tied in with this ideology.' Even among people who have wanted to have an open mind, for them, it is becoming more difficult. And these are the people we need the most."
This sort of statement by Irfan shows how cynical Mohammedans are. There has been no condemnation of the atrocities committed by Mohammedans around the world. Rather there has been celebration of many of those atrocities, such as the homocide bombers in Israel, in mosques in the United States. These people have had ample opportunity to show us they are with us but they have not. They have, by their inaction and inability to speak out against atrocities and their audacity to complain about non-Mohammedans being concerned as to which side they are on how proven they support the terrorists.
All true...fine post
How nice of them. I would be much more impressed if these peace loving Islamics stepped forward and unequivacally and unconditionally denounced 09.11, the beheadings, AQ, Hammas, and Moslem terrorism in general, without including explainations, justifications, excuses, buts, and other not so subtle innuendo blaming America and the Jeeeooooows for the underlying cause of every act of terrorism.
Perhaps if they were to do as the 44Duce Combat Regiment of WWII.
I hear a lot of these accusations of almost atrocities, hard looks and empty threats. It serves to remind me that Muslims can protest the beheading and slaughter of their fellow Americans any time they wish, their ability to protest is not broken.
Perhaps someday they even will...
Along the same lines I get irritated with some flag flying displays.
I don't know if it happens other close to the border areas, but an annoying number of places out here in the SEattle area fly the US flag, the WA state flag, and the Canadian flag. It has to be some stupid symbol of multinational solidarity or something. This is NOT Canada dammit.
That's what we call prostelytizing.
How convenient that these "churches" allowed that in their houses of worship.
You gotta know it to teach it.
