President Bush is no President Reagan. But then, he's no Lincoln, Reagan was no Lincoln, and I'm not my Grandfather (either of them)-- never will be, though I hope, dream, and try hard.
In 1980, we didn't need a Lincoln, we needed a Ronald Wilson Reagan, and the Almighty was pleased to send him.
In 2004, we need something else; I pray it's a George W. Bush, and he's looking good so far...
Communism didn't fall during the Reagan terms; it was years later, but who gets the credit? We probably won't see the end of organized, global terrorism during the Bush terms, but it's possible, even likely, that he'll get the credit, if he has what is needed today to bring that about.
Outside the media and the organized opposition, we are a results-oriented people, and "greatness" in presidents is -- and should be -- found in those who bring us what we need, when we need it, particularly in great times of need.
Reagan took a lot of heat while he was in office (as he has this week, unfortunately). So did Abraham Lincoln (much, much worse -- I've read a lot on it this week). Both handled it well, and I believe President Bush is doing so, too. But "fading the heat" isn't greatness, or there would be a move to put Clinton on Mt. Rushmore. Hell, not fading the heat doesn't deprive one of greatness, either -- Sergei Rachmaninof nearly comitted suicide, but came back to give us his 2nd Concerto!
No, true greatness will always lie in being effective, maybe efficient, responding to needs in time of great need. President Reagan met the test, and I believe President Bush is doing well. This is, in large part, the "test" the liberal talking heads are arrogating to their own arguments this week, when they say that President Reagan was "just" a great communicator, "just" in the right place at the right time, as Communism self-destructed, to his bewilderment (in other words, either "Communism wasn't that big a threat," or "Communism was going down on its own, anyway" i.e., "there was no great need").
We know that isn't so, and that he was both effective and efficient in a multi-faceted program that brought the Soviet Union to its knees by attacking all its weaknesses. Sure, he did a lot of it by borrowing a lot of money we're still paying back; many hated him for that, and considered his deficits broken promises.
He was doing the right thing the right way, though, at the right time, and you can bet Gorbachev agrees today.
I'm from Texas (no, I'm in Texas, never lived anywhere else :-), so the President's twang, his "aw, shucks" speeches, his insistance on sticking with "newkuler," and all the other things that piss off the eastern intellectuals and liberals don't bother me at all. We'll see, one way or the other, about his spending, his open borders, his internal crackdowns (the "Patriot Act"), and the rest.
The ultimate test, though, of whether he's a "great" President, won't have anything to do with how much like Reagan he's been. History will determine that on whether he's the right man, doing the right things, right, when we need it badly.
Like Reagan, and Lincoln, and any other president you respect and consider great, President Bush must win elections to do anything at all; in our democracy, that has often required embracing positions and taking actions you might not if you were a totalitarian dictator unconcerned about public opinion. Fifty-fifty last time around, remember?
Bottomline. At this point the President needs all the support he can muster. It's gonna be a rough road to victory.
Yeah, near term, there is a great need, and we need to be about the right things, in the right way, to give President Bush his shot at greatness!
Scripture puts it this way: "Cast not your pearls before swine." Yes, the Bible gives us the understanding that there are people who are "swine" and tells us what how to deal with them.

I thought I saw Bush 41 salute as the coffin passed him as it was leaving the cathedral but Nonie here has mentioned that. I thought it was a rather cool thing for him to do being his V.P. and all the other levels of their relationship and all.

Wow, I am sure many of you saw President Reagan's funeral tonight.
Did any of you see the Star of David in the sun that turned into a Cross and then the combination of the two? It was awesome!
If any of you can get a still picture of that, I'd sure like to post it.

God was there! It lets me know that in all the hard things our nation is going through, God is not going to let us down if we stay faithful to Him.

The union was demanding a 100% raise according to Peggy Noonan. Reagan offered 11% and they turned it down. They were explicitly told that they would be fired if they went on strike. 70% did.
