KHOBAR, Saudi Arabia - Tens of American, European and other hostages were released Sunday and a gunman believed to be the lead Islamic militant holding them was arrested, a Saudi security official said, adding that two other gunmen were "in the process of being arrested."
We are the "Stotters" who make ourselves aware of the enemy who wishes to do us harm

Amtrak train derails on S. Side
Tribune staff reports
Published June 8, 2004, 1:33 PM CDT
An Amtrak train heading inbound to Chicago from Indianapolis derailed this afternoon on Chicago's South Side.
No injuries were reported, but the incident temporarily shut down service on a Metra commuter line to the southwest suburbs.
Train No. 317, the Hoosier State, derailed at 12:30 p.m. at 42nd Street just west of the Dan Ryan Expressway. It was heading north toward Union Station, CLTV reported.
The locomotive lost contact with the tracks at a switch, and both it and a passenger coach derailed, said Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari. The two cars remained upright.
About 40 passengers were to be taken off the train and transferred to another, inbound train that was following it, CLTV reported. The Chicago Fire Department remained at the scene as railroad personnel worked to put the train back on the tracks.
The incident forced the cancellation of two afternoon trains of Metra's Southwest Service to Orland Park, which uses the same set of tracks to leave downtown Chicago, said Dan Schnolis, spokesman for the commuter rail agency.
Buses will substitute for Trains No. 7 and 9, due to depart Union Station at 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m., Schnolis said. It was not yet known if the accident would affect the afternoon rush hour on that line.

I have been to the National Cathedral many times, very beautiful church. Such a sad state of affairs that the final mass for Pres. Reagan will occur with a need for extreme security measures. This is just the type of existence that did not want for our country; and he valiantly fought to preserve our security. He would be shocked what has transpired in these last three years here in the U.S. If someone would have told me back in August '01 that we would have constant terror warnings here in the U.S.; I would have thought that they had gone mad.
Most definitely. I would like to have seen a wholesale housecleaning at all of the alphabet agencies as soon as Pres. Bush took office.
There were a number of people here on that fateful terrible September day who still thought we had gone mad. They still do, sometimes. ;)
I love your FR homepage.....great links. Your daughter is so adorable! With two sons...my husband and I see friends' little daughters and sometimes say...one more...but I know that we would probably have another son. Our house is alrealy boiling over with testosterone.
I am in agreement with both of you; I do think they are probing the system. Too many incidents recently of suspicious persons being questioned and RELEASED.
THANK YOU.
An airburst is counterproductive to terrorist goals. A LOT less residual radiation is produced and you lack that all important psychological trauma (and photo op) produced by the stereotypical "mushroom cloud" effect. The mushroom cloud is the result of a ground burst (anything from street level to about 100 feet---ten stories) where the dirt is instantly irradiated and shot thousands of feet into the sky to slowly settle and DRIFT on the wind as radioactive particles. IIRC from my nbc school notes, you can sometimes measure the size of the blast and the range to the blast by measuring the angle from your location to the top of the cloud at a designated time period...something like that.
Two hundred feet to five hundred feet of altitude isn't enough for a good airburst to be really effective. You'd need something like 1500 to 2000 feet and timing of the blast would be critical. Something special in the way of triggers and detonators. An ICBM fired from a nationstate like Russia (the former USSR) or China (possible now thanks to Clinton) would have the lab facilities to construct such a device and test it until they got it right.
But I'm thinking that sort of thing is beyond our opponent until such a nationstate is willing to risk a nuclear retaliatory strike from an enraged USA for aligning themselves with terror. It could happen, especially in the aftermath of a massive strike, where the perception real or imagined, is that the USA is "on the ropes."
Trying to catch up here. But I think that they are communicated to state and local because I have noticed really heavy police presence. I don't think it's just because I'm paying more attention I really think they are in full force and effect. I also get the sense that our Homeland Security and other Fed agencies working on anti terrorism are scrambling right now. I think that they went public with so much recently because they know something coming down but are at their wits ends to stop it and they figured they might have a better chance if the public were more aware. Just my thoughts. Also, it's 1:00 and no attack yet so I must eat crow and say, Thank God I was wrong on my 6/8 date prediction. I hope were are all wrong but I not optimistic.
How is good ol White Plains? I worked on North Street for 8 years with General Foods. We did plenty of boozing at Olivers and Gambelies (sp).

Don't get me started on Oliviers. Best pick-up joint -- I mean best burger joint in town.
SALEM, Ore. -- A stolen briefcase left in a Salem parking lot attracted plenty of attention Tuesday morning, forcing the partial evacuation of an Oregon state government building.......
OK, I'm digging through the dark recesses of my mind, but WAY back on Thread 1 or 2 was a link talking about terrorists in the Philippines (I think) using motorcycles. Off to google...
I know I was single once! Although we would always complain about the men in the area of course! Is Gambits still around at the Marriott in Tarrytown? I know the Rye Town Hilton had a bar that was also a pick up place you would like.
