Dear fellow Georgians,
This past Saturday morning I was honored to address the Georgia GOP State Convention in Columbus. The energy and excitement that was felt at the convention is proof that Georgians are ready to believe in the promise of a better America.
The United States is being challenged by the war on terror, the war on our moral foundation and the war on our economic infrastructure. But America is still the greatest country in the world because of the bold leadership of the past and the American Dream that is still alive today.
In 1994 we had a vision for a better America and a desire to "restore the bonds of trust between the people and their elected representatives." Ten years later the Republican Revolution that was started right here in Georgia has stalled because too many members of Congress, like my opponent Rep. Isakson, are more concerned with positionship rather than leadership.
I am the only candidate for the U.S. Senate with the bold leadership and passion for change. I have been working on replacing the federal tax code for 10 years and am the only candidate who has the depth of understanding to provide the necessary leadership in the U.S. Senate to make it happen. I am also firm in my belief that life begins at conception and will do everything I can to protect the lives of the unborn.
As I told the GOP delegates at the State Convention, “If you want someone who will show up and vote and not rock the boat, that's Rep. Isakson. If you want someone who will rock the boat then drive the boat, I’m your man.”
July 20th offers the opportunity to bring bold new leadership that will transform the way the United States Senate works.
Under my “Contract with Georgia,” I will restart the Republican Revolution that pledged "the end of government that is too big, too intrusive, and too easy with the public's money."
On the first day of the 109th Congress, I will immediately begin working on the following major reforms, aimed at restoring the faith and trust of the American people in their government:
FIRST, Shut down the IRS and replace it with the Fair Tax;
SECOND, Implement mandatory spending caps on all discretionary spending to balance the federal budget;
THIRD, Protect life which begins at conception;
FOURTH, Restructure Social Security so that we continue to provide for our Nation's seniors that are approaching retirement age, but allow for younger taxpayers to invest a portion of their Social Security taxes in personal retirement accounts;
FIFTH, Further delay BRAC so that we can focus on winning the war on terrorism and determine how each military base can better continue the fight to defend America;
SIXTH, Totally restructure how Medicare is being delivered in order to achieve greater heath care affordability and accessibility for all Americans;
SEVENTH, Fight to protect the definition of marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman;
EIGHTH, Fight to end the Cloture Rule in the United States Senate so that President George W. Bush's conservative judges can be confirmed;
NINTH, Fight to protect our Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms;
TENTH, Ensure that our Religious Liberties are not compromised.
It is time to bring back the ideas born under the Republican Revolution. People need to be shown that government is not the answer, government is the problem. We need to remind America that the Republican party stands for fiscal conservatism, strong moral values and commitment to pushing our Nation forward. This is a new time, a new day and this is the dawn of a new Republican Party. This is just the beginning. It is morning again here in Georgia.

Good letter from HC! Looks like he will be a wonderful partner for John Linder on the Fair Tax. Does anyone have recent reports on how the Senate primary race is stacking up in Georgia?
His record at Godfather's was pathetic. I think it lost money every year under his leadership.

Owens and Tom Ridge are leading candidates in 2008 in my opinion, but you can't rule Rudy out either. Ridge was a VP "finalist" in 2000 along with Cheney and Keating. Have you ever heard Ridge's life story? You've gotta admire a Harvard Grad who decides to go to Vietnam as an Enlisted man. If anything happens to Cheney in the next 4 years, there's a very high chance that Tom Ridge gets bumped up to VP. check out his story:
Gov. Ridge was raised in a working class family in veterans' public housing in Erie. He earned a scholarship to Harvard, graduating with honors in 1967. After his first year at The Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for Valor. After returning to Pennsylvania, he earned his law degree and was in private practice before becoming assistant district attorney in Erie County. He was elected to Congress in 1982. He was the first enlisted Vietnam combat veteran elected to the U.S. House, and was overwhelmingly re-elected six times.
I love this guy! I mean, because of the color of his skin, he is allowed to say things that white conservatives are just allowed to think. The idea of a Fair Tax would push the United States further out in front of the rest of the world in terms of economic advancement. Having a strong leader like Cain in the U.S. Senate will help push such ideas to fruition. I plan to send him a few bucks (which I never do in primary battles outside of California). Go Herman Go!!!

A plain-speaking man who has definitely earned my vote. It's time to get rid of the non-working good ol' boys.

That's a good question - one that I have tried to get a handle on. Cain has moved ahead of Collins for second place behind Johnnny Isakson. Isakson has the advantage of name recognition and $$$. Herman's campaign definitely has momentum. His political director told me last week that he is shooting for a complete victory on July 20. That would be a stunning development. More realistic would be for him to hold Isakson below 50% on the first ballot and pick off more of Collins's conservative votes in a runoff. I think that he has a chance to be the next senator and it would make headlines. He has come from absolutely nowhere in terms of name recognition. Herman himself seems extremely upbeat and enthusiastic. I hear almost nothing but positives and he seems to be having the time of his life. He has a great ability to connect with people and he is much more vibrant and charismatic than either of his two opponents. His political director says they haven't done any polling. This is going to be fascinating to watch these next 60 days.
Herman told me a couple of weeks ago that he will be opening up more field offices around the state soon. He already has one on Valdosta, and he is the only one who has one in south Georgia. He says that he will be the only candidate running a state-wide operaation.
What are his chances, do you think?
I am optomistic. I think he has a good chance to hold Isakson below 50% on the first ballot and, if he does, a reasonable chance to win the runoff. If I had to make a guess, I would put his chances at 50/50 now. Back in December, those odds would have probably been 100-1.
If he were to win on the first ballot, it would send shockwaves through Georgia and, to a lesser extent, the nation. It would definitely get the attention of many congresspersons around the nation relative to the FairTax.
Imagine a Cain Rice ticket in '08.
That's a very common position for non-incumbant Republican candidates to take in contested primaries.
But once they get elected they quickly drop the subject.

Herman Cain has been fighting for tax reform for years now. The senate seat isn't an end in and of itself for him - it's a platform to allow him to work on the big issues that he cares about. #1 on that list is Fundamental Tax Reform.
His opponents have signed onto the FairTax bill in the House, but Isakson has also waffled lately, calling for a commission to write a new tax code. What a cop-out!
Wrong!!!! He took it from being a company that was losing to profitability in record time. Then he bought the company!

Thanks a lot for your insights. Looks like Georgia is having a very interesting primary season, leading the nation in debating the important political issues. Fortunately, Georgians have their heads on straight with respect to national security, so it allows them to give fair consideration to other subjects on their merits.
Guess I will have to donate some money to his campaign.
