U.S. journalist wants war to failEditors believe it would ensure 'evil' Bush ousted

A British reporter says a U.S. journalist in Baghdad told him she wants to see more Iraqis die so President Bush will be thrown out of office in November.

Toby Harnden, Middle East correspondent for the London Daily Telegraph, said he engaged in the conversation while taking a break by the pool at the Al-Hamra Hotel in the Iraqi capital.

In an opinion piece for the Spectator magazine of Britain, Harnden said at poolside he "was accosted by an American magazine journalist of serious accomplishment and impeccable liberal credentials."

The American journalist told Harnden she had been disturbed by his argument that Iraqis were better off now than under Saddam Hussein.

Harnden said he heard from her the usual "script" from antiwar activists, "no WMD, no 'imminent threat' (though the point was to deal with Saddam before such a threat could emerge), a diversion from the hunt for bin Laden, enraging the Arab world, etc."

But the American then came to her point, Hernden said.

"Not only had she 'known' the Iraq war would fail but she considered it essential that it did so because this would ensure that the 'evil' George W. Bush would no longer be running her country.

"Her editors back on the East Coast were giggling, she said, over what a disaster Iraq had turned out to be. 'Lots of us talk about how awful it would be if this worked out.'"

"Startled by her candor," said Herndon, "I asked whether thousands more dead Iraqis would be a good thing."

The British journalist said, "She nodded and mumbled something about Bush needing to go."

He then suggest to her that by this logic another Sept. 11 attack, on about Sept. 11, would be perfect for pushing up John Kerry's poll numbers.

"Well, that's different — that would be Americans," she said, haltingly, according to Harnden. "I guess I'm a bit of an isolationist."

In his column, Harnden then commented on the "moral degeneracy of these sentiments," concluding with:

"Whatever we thought about the war before it was launched, it is imperative that the forces of Arab nationalism and Islamism that now threaten to destroy Iraq are defeated. If America fails in Iraq it will be all of us in the West, not just Bush, who will suffer. But those who would be most in peril, of course, would be the Iraqis, who deserve better than to have their country treated as an electoral playground by the American Left or Right. To wish otherwise is as sick as the grins on the faces of the Abu Ghraib torturers."

I heard this too, it was incredible, and I actually got sick to my stomach! Savage handled him so well, better than he usually does. Could not believe my ears Travis, that an American citizen could say such a thing. This isn't politics anymore.

I saw the Author of the book "Terror in the Name of God" on a replay of Washington journal and she was reciting the usual DemonicRat points that going into Iraq was a mistake, it was causing recruitment , it was humiliating Islam people, etc...

She had worked for the Clinton White House , knew Richard Clarke, and that he must have really felt that Bush was totally wrong in his approach for him to say in the book, and in the hearings what he said, as he was simply a good public servant!

With a bit of google detective work, I'll bet we can figure out who this Quisling traitor reporter was.

Then we can really do some freeping.

For sure it could be the same thoughts as Dan. This is a female magazine writer though, and Gail said much the same on that horrible radio show.

Yet they see nothing wrong with holding that opinion. This is not like resisting the spread of socialism, because the Communist prison camps and "re-education" facilities were predisposed to just softening up attitudes, and making them more malleable. The establishment of Shar'ia law, and the forced conversion to the Muslim faith, which provide but two choices, adopt the faith or die on the spot, is far more intrusive than just being branded an "enemy of the people". There is a faint possibility of being freed from prison some far distant time in the future under Socialist rule. The world outside the prison may not be of distinctly greater range of freedom than within the prison.

But in a world under the direction of the Wahhabists, death may prove far more restrictive than prison alone. The Iraqis must be dragged into the 21st Century if only to diminish this threat of a world-wide theocracy on the Iranian model. We of the West have an historic opportunity to forge a new more rational international presence than we have known since early in the 20th Century, before the divisions that gave rise to the Great War. Militant Islamic jihadists threaten that prospective peace.

Funny thing. I have known some democrat/liberals in the military. After the Florida vote thing and the anti-military spewings from the media, many of these troops have left the democrat party.

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Stern, a former fellow on terrorism at the Council on Foreign Relations (and the inspiration for Nicole Kidman's character in The Peacemaker), makes the issue personal by depicting her encounters with religious terrorists around the world. Her definition of "religious terrorism" is comprehensive, encompassing the growing Muslim jihad in Indonesia, militant Palestinians and zealous Israelis, and Americans who kill abortion doctors in the name of Christ. Given the opportunity to articulate their positions, these and other subjects surprise not by their vehemence but by their relative normality, making it all the more curious that many of them eventually elect to strike against their opponents with deadly force. Explaining the "how" therefore becomes as important as explaining the "why," and the book carefully outlines the ways in which militant leaders of all denominations find recruits among the disenfranchised and recondition them, often under cultlike conditions, stoking their zealotry to the point of suicide and murder. Coupled with additional research, Stern's firsthand encounters bring a valuable and much-needed perspective to the problem of religious violence, and she identifies several increasingly broad threats, including the extent to which many governments will tolerate or even sponsor militant religious groups to further their own political agendas. For all the material damage terrorist acts cause, Stern argues, we should understand religious militance as a form of psychological warfare, calculated to bolster the faithful and strike "spiritual dread" in the unbelievers; the most effective counterstrategy is thus not violence but nonviolent techniques such as psychological counterwarfare and the reaffimation of our own values.

The way I see it, not many of our domestic enemies are into guns and shooting. I'd guess their coward's choice of weapon would be the bomb left in the office or restaurant.

I can't decide if it would resemble a civil war, or a dirty war.

Probably elements of Spain 1936, Argentina 1976, El Salvador 1980, Northern Ireland 1970s, Bosnia 1993....

If it happens, it will be a national tragedy. It will make CW 2, with its uniforms and clear lines seem to be a quaint and chivalrous affair.

The sad thing is that this "help the world" attitude is the American way! But of course when we actually DO something about it we get no credit any more.

We spent a fortune protecting Europe and most of the world for the greater part of a century only to realize that France hasn't changed since they helped us in our Revolution. They did that only for personal gains - unlike our WWI, WWII, Cold War including Vietnam (their unfinished mess), Gulf War (OK, we did want oil to keep flowing - but contrary to world opinion we didn't take the oil!)

Where is Fort Sumter going to be this time?

First of all, I won't put the left on par with either the south or the north in the war between the states. The only high-minded ideals for which they would fight are rendered hollow and meaningless by anything but non-violence.

Second, I dare not speak my mind for fear of giving them any ideas. But they rattle the saber when they talk of banning our military grade weapons and ammunition. They draw a bead when they misreport and betray the movement of our troops. And they set the fuse when they talk about overthrowing our government because the Electoral College ruled against them.

It is they who will fire the first shot. They've already said they would. If there's anything we have learned from 9/11 and from the Holocaust, it's that one should believe it when someone says he aims to do you and your country harm.

I'm telling you, everyday, a countdown to culture war. Sick leftist weirdos against the rest of us. I just can't tell if their stronghold in California is going to collapse from immigration and fiscal stupidity before or after. The left coast would be a laugh riot if it wasn't for the electoral power they control. If I was one of the Republicans out there, still fighting the good fight, I think I'd have lost my sanity by now. Six months was plenty for me.

Interesting, we finally get a President who says what he means and they say he isn't diplomatic.

If the Clinton/Kerry/French model of having no core beliefs that you are willing to fight for is diplomacy then I thank God Bush isn't "diplomatic" and realize that is why people like the media can call it patriotic to betray their own soldiers.

Shouldn't be too hard. There's got to be a list that can tell us who the female press members were over there in the same area at the same time. Did anybody forward this to Hannity or Rush yet? I bet they can find out in no time.

They hate us because they we are taking all that money away from them and spending it on the war. They want all of that money for them. They thought things were going perfectly during the Clinton era. Guns and bullets were going to butter. They were gobbling up great helpings from Momma Government. Until the Republicans came on the scene in '94. Then the tap began to be turned off. Now the Party that spends could no longer spend their way to reelection. It's not just hate. It is as close to pure evil as it gets: like that of a junkie who has had his drug connection shut off.

We need to be patient and merciful. Call it tough love. We need to reelect Bush.
