BREAKING NEWS - FEDS ARREST EAST CLEVELAND MAYOR
Posted on 04/22/2004 8:31:10 AM PDT by mabelkitty
BREAKING NEWS Feds arrest East Cleveland Mayor Federal agents this morning arrested East Cleveland Mayor Emmanuel Onunwor on a 22-count indictment for accepting "bribes, kickbacks and secret payoffs" over his career as a city official. A federal grand jury has been investigating Onunwor and other city officials since last year. In January, the grand jury indicted the city's former community development director on charges of channeling federal money to her relatives through "front companies" and accepting kickbacks in return. The U.S. attorney's office said Onunwor solicited and received numerous bribes from unspecified "intermediaries" that span his career as East Cleveland City Council president, community development director and mayor. Onunwor is to appear in court this afternoon.

"Gee...a Dem who takes bribes and kickbacks????">br> Actually, he's a Republican. So is Arlen Specter.
So is John McCain.
For that matter, so is GWB.
To: mabelkitty
I bet he was set up by Springer who is just itching to return to mayoral politics.
(just kidding)

"Well, so is McCain. If anything, I think this character is a RINO."
You're probably right. He still runs as a Republican, though. I just wanted to clear up his party for those who assumed he was a Democrat.

Does not matter. Corrupt is corrupt...throw his butt in prison. I agree. And he's more likely to have his butt thrown in prison if he has an "R", didn't he know that when he switched for what seems to be pure personal convenience?

He's been under investigation for some time. When did he switch parties? Not sure. Of course, he's a republican on paper only. Would that make him a ROPO?

He IS a Democrat.
He switched parties after he was voted in to office - this is his first term as Mayor.
He would not have been elected as a Republican.

The feds have a couple of investigations underway on the San Diego city council as well. One for taking bribes from a strip club owner, and one for knowingly making false statements to Wall Street about the city's finances. My fondest hope is to see those idiots thrown in the slammer.

You live in Montgomery County, by any chance, because you describe out local politics to a "T". And the country party embraces this sort of behavior as "Big Tent" politics.

These type of people, wet their finger, stick it in the air to see which way the wind is blowing and then change their party affiliation accordingly.
They are NOT republicans. They are users of the system. Just interesting that the wind was blowing Republican when they decided to choose a party.
These types of people hurt everyone; help no one.

"We here in Texas have a problem in a lot of primaries trying to decide which former Democrat will make the best Republican candidate. This is notable in districts where only Republicans can be elected now. Seems as if a lot of politicians have no party loyalty to anyone or anything but themselves."Gee, you couldn't be talking about the "Honorable" Ralph Hall, now could you?

Yhis is funny...i probably shouldnt say this but I saw this unfold live from my window at home. You would have never known what was going on. Looked like a VERY early morning meeting. Unmarked cars (about 15) and lots of guys in suits. Very quiet..so quiet in fact that no ones dogs even barked. Needless to say i live VERY close to this guy and have seen alot of strange things over the past year. He has been bad news for a long time and no one in the neighborhood seems to like him much. I count myself part of that group. Today i didnt see a thing though. Just right now there are about 5 different cars parked outside his house. A newscrew came by as well and tried to ask a few people questions. He's corrupt as hell and i could see that from the first time i spoke with him something seemed funny. Very slick. Apparently also an opportunist but did at least talk like a republican in the old sense not a conservative sense. This guy is relatively new to the country as well since he came over from nigeria i think 15 or so years ago. My uncle does business with this city and lots of cities around here. Last year when i moved here he went on and on about how corrupt this guy and his admin was with contracts. You couldnt do work for the city unless you paid the right people that kind of thing.

It's from West Africa (Liberia I believe). He is credited with being the first "African Born Mayor".
