Virtually all the replies on thread up to now have focused on Karla and whether or not she deserved to be executed. What about the deterrent effect on others? I think it is about time that our courts and the public begin to consider the effect some crimes have on society as a whole. The sentencing phase of any criminal trial sets a precedent for future sentencing.

Curiously enough, every report I found on this case always referred to this murderer's beauty and "girl next door" attractiveness.

Death row conversions are a dime a dozen. Many no doubt are sincere. Many aren't. This story made the news because KFT was a pretty woman. For every one of her, there are a thousand? Ten thousand? Men who are converted on death row, and in many cases not even Solomon could judge whether that conversion is worth anything.

Deterrence and prevention of future crimes are arguments for the death penalty, but not the reason. The real reason is the biblical principle of a life for a life. When KFT took a life in the way she did her own life became forfeit. Repentence and remorse will save her soul, but it can't spare her life once that jury makes its decision.

I have no problem with Dubya not stopping her execution....it wasn't his call,IMO....

As Governor at the time, Bush could have stayed the execution.

My understanding is the Governor of Texas can only stay an execution for 30 days at most, if there is reasonable doubt. I'm not a lawyer or an expert on the Texas Constitution, but that is the length of my understanding.

Just for the record her conversion was way before the conviction. I thought she seemed more sincere than some of the others. I did know some normally anti-dx types who thought that she should have been executed because she was a Christian. That was even more scary.

I'm pretty sure that is right, a temporary stay only. Thirty days sounds right. I think Perry did that on one last year when they found out from one in the queue that he had information on some OTHER murders. He stayed it so they could get that information to clean up some old cases. His information was good and it gave some victims families closure on their relatives death. They put him back on the list and he was sent on to meet his maker ...

The wonderful thing about salvation is that very sinful, offensive and disturbed individuals can be transformed by coming into relationship with God through Jesus Christ. However, this does not clear the books on the social crimes that they have committed. She deserved the death penalty and entered her reward as someone saved by faith in Christ. The end of those who know not Christ is more tragic than hers.

Which is something, I guess, but how bad of an inmate do you have to be to not make parole in this day and age?

Crimes committed in prison (rape, assault, murder...) should be elligible for additional time in prison.

I have no evidence he committed any such crimes in prison.
There would be additional trials, he just had the one.

I do have evidence that he is an incorrigible sociopath and that it was so obvious that even the parole board must have seen it...

I'm glad to hear she repented and accepted Jesus Christ. If she understood her salvation correctly than she should have been all the more willing and ready to die.
