I cannnot think you and all of the others enough for your mission and commitment to your (and mine) country. I thought our President could have been a tad more elequent but one thing is clear: this man is commited regardless of polls, opinions or a wimpy opposing party. I will stand with him (or in front of him) and say I believe in what you are doing and I firmly believe that our President speaks for the majority of Americans when he says you are sacrificing for a cause 2nd to none - freedom for the Iraqi people and security for us in the states. At this intensely critical time he just doesn't inspire any national unity against our enemies. We need leadership and he comes off as...less than average.

Unless one is a 'bot, his speech could not be considered as anything near patriotic.

Well then you obviously weren't listening to his speech. He first said it had been a bad few weeks for the troops, for Americans and for the Iraqi people. He spoke about the terrorists creating the isolated uprisings, specifically stating that this wasn't a civil war or an all-out uprising by the Iraqi people. He went on to say that the troops would do what they had to do, and would have the equipment they needed to do it. He specifically spoke to the families of those soldiers who have died, saying that he had promised them they would not have died in vain.

The President's comments were firm and consistent. As far as your demand for something "new", I'm not sure exactly what you were expecting. He specifically dealt with the occurrences of the past few weeks, which to me is new. If anybody tried to stick with old crap, it was the reporters asking bogus questions like: Why can't you ever admit you make a mistake, and Why won't you aplogize for 9/11.

His leadership was evident thoughout his speech. He clearly stated that the turnover of sovereignty to the Iraq people was going to be June 30th and no later. He said that we were going to stay the course in Iraq and complete the job. Frankly I don't know where you get there was "no direction" to his speech. He said the uprisings were going to be dealt with, if more troops were needed, they would be sent, the turnover would take place as scheduled, and we would stay the course. Sounds like direction to me.

National unitiy? Didn't you hear the President say he doesn't make decisions based on polls? You'll never have national unity on this war. We didn't have it after 9/11. There were assholes demonstrating against action in Afghanistan. The majority of the people still believe that our going into Iraq was the right thing to do.

As far as patriotism and rallying the troops goes, when the President spoke firmly and with conviction, when he showed compassion for the dead soldiers and their families, that was patriotism to me. I'm not sure if you wanted him to pull a Jimmy Cagney tap dancing across the stage.

He rallied the troops when he reaffirmed that we were in this war for the long haul, that we weren't going to leave or fail on his watch, and that the troops would have what they needed to get the job done. He also argued with the perception that Iraq was another Vietnam, stating that he felt that kind of comparison was detrimental to the troops.

If you think his speech was full of nothing but meaningless drivel, you weren't listening, or were only hearing what you wanted to. Personally, I don't know what you expected. A fist-pounding, hellfire ranting? That's not President Bush. He showed the proper demeanor during a time when our troops and their families have suffered greatly. For him to appear or behave differently would have been disrespectful to those who have lost their lives during these past weeks.
