Does Debka have a track record of getting things wrong?

Well, you must be fairly recent here.. It is a long running discussion ...their track record is very spotty...

Wait a minute...when I left the forum this morning WE were on an offensive in Falloujah. Now I hear we are fending off an offensive on two fronts...?

We have gone into the Mosques before.

We have even more political cover to do so again, right now.

I do not think that it is a barrier right now. I understand the SOB moved out of the mosque this morning due to fears that we will come in and is hiding in some other religious shrine or something.

We are going to get him and we have adequate people and resources to do it.

It is, as I said, hand to hand combat that is going to be very costly.

I see the media is already hyperventilating!

They do not understand.

Yes, I agree, that with knowledge of the present, we can safely say that we should have gone after this guy regardless of his presence in a Mosque, but at the time it was thought that he would not be a major problem. His supporters are limited to the poor and ill educated rabble. he did not have any major political support and as I understand, he still does not.

These are the dead enders.

read Keegan's book - he claims despite the intel at Midway it was the intuition of McClusky and the lack of resolution of Naguamo that were the cause of our victory there..just repeating what he says. He makes some interesting points.

Without the intel, our forces would not have been anywhere near enough to cause Nagumo's lack of resolve.

crushed ....not cuffed.

While I would personally delight in pulling the trigger I believe it would have a better effect on his followers to see him on TV getting his teeth checked a la Saddam. Plus we could squeeze info out of him like who in Iran is supporting him.

It's like the old joke about the old bull and the young bull standing on a hill looking at the herd.

Young Bull - "Hey let's run down there and hook up with a cow!"

Old Bull - Why not WALK down and get them all?"

Why hurry through these towns and shoot a few bad guys when we can systematically and methodically go through and get them all?

I think you are being too sanguine in your analysis. If this uprising delivers results (disorder, coalition KIA, financing from Al Qaeda, Iran, Syria, Saudis) it will get far worse.

I have posted in this thread my opinion that we don't know how bad this surprise was to our forces. We should have an idea about that in 48 hours or so, when the results of today's attacks come in.

I know it's wrong to day "12 Marines were killed! Our intel blew it!" War always offers the possibility for setbacks and suprises.

My fear over the last few days was that the Marines engaging Fallujah would be hit in the rear. Maybe our brass had similar concerns, and discounted the possibility of a wider uprising.

The Turks did not, and do not, want anything that empowers the Kurds, with whom they have been fighting for decades.

If there was an independent Kurdistand carved out of northern Iraq, with its own oil fields for revenue, and with the stipulation that they must allow free immigration of Turkey's Kurds, we might have a win-win situation. Turkey would be rid of their Kurd problem (along with their Kurds) and the Kurds would have their own self-supporting country

Based on the tenor of the reports, I think your speculation is quite credible. This was/is a big deal. I'm sure there are lessons to be taken, too. But I'm sure not qualified, nor inclined, to play Monday morning quarterback, our fighting forces have more on the ball than I will ever have.
