Edited on 05/27/2014 11:31:00 AM PDT by Admin Moderator. [history]

Note: Don't post anything at all from the Las Vegas Review Journal or anything from organizations run by Stevens Media, LLC or RightHaven, LLC until the lawsuit brought against us by them is resolved.

Here's an updated alphabetical list of the sites that have complained about copyright violations thus far. The posting program will only allow excerpts and or deny posting where designated from the following sites:

These sites must be excerpted and linked only [300 words or less, 1/2 the words or less for short articles]:

All McClatchy sources must be excerpted and linked.

These publishers have asked us not to allow any material at all to be posted to FR:

05/06/04 -

Received another letter from Gannett Publications, publisher of USAToday, and several other newspapers. Due to contractual arrangements they have with third-party content providers, they have denied our request to allow posting of excerpts. They will only allow the posting of titles and links.

Please do not post full text or even excerpts from the following Gannett Web sites:

GANNETT NEWSPAPERS ON THE WEB:

We will eventually add a link to this list from our posting program. In the meantime, you can find it by searching on "copyright list."

In addition to all of the above, do not post articles written by Maralyn Lois Polak per her copyright complaint. Her column usually appears on WorldNetDaily.

Also, do not post images from Corbis or Getty.

Thanks,

Jim

********Additional

New York Times must be excerpted.

All material from the Associated Press must be excerpted regardless of source (very brief excerpts). AP photos are not allowed.

Photographs, pictures, images, graphs etc may not be posted if the websites are on the lists or added in any of the posts below.

And now you have to share some more!

Is this the most recent list? Anyone know?

As far as I know, this is the most recent list, but I was off line for the past two weeks.

Here's what FURL says about copyright....they seem to have an altogether different view of things...

http://www.furl.net/faq.jsp#copy
http://www.furl.net/faq.jsp#copy

"# Isn't Furl a huge copyright violation?

A common misperception of Furl is that it allows people to share copyrighted work. Fortunately for everyone, that is not the case. When you save an item with Furl, you save a copy of the document, but that copy is only visible to you. When other users view an item in your public archive, they are directed to the publishers site. If that site requires membership, they must sign up to see the content.

Contrary to these concerns, we believe that Furl is a boon to publishers because it lets people share the interesting and useful information that they find online. This means that any publisher/journalist who produces good work, regardless of their strength in distribution, can be found by thousands of people who otherwise would have never ventured to the site. We know, personally, that we have read many wonderful articles that we never would have seen had it not been for Furl. If you have any concerns with regards to this issue, please contact us. "

I have the distinct feeling that your Free Republic is doing the job you intended it to do. When something is successful, the first thing that happens is to squelch information; i.e., my First Amendment rights. Is that what all this is about?

I thought that once something was published for common consumption, it was no longer private. I don’t want you getting sued, but this makes me angry. However I’ll do what you say.

I just tried to post an article that was kind of funny about a russian astrologer suing NASA Link: http://www.mosnews.com/news/2005/09/14/marinabay.shtml

But it gave me an error that we are not allowed to post articles from mosnews.com, what gives, they aren't listed on the baned list.

Thanks for your help.

I don't know weather to congratulate you or feel chilled by the gathering storm.

You tireless efforts are apparently changing the culture of news distribution in the US.

I can only hope that as a result of your inspiration our society will be better off because of the electronic, grass roots, rebellion genre you pioneered 10 years ago.

Good luck to us all.

Just a learning newbie, where is a freeper 101 guide to be found? And a jargon dictionary for that matter.

This is a lot like when GM first started installing CB's in stock radios; suddenly everyone was a trucker, and just a few were tolerant of the hoi polloi.

Happy New Year, Navy

Try this for a start. I'm new myself and find it takes a while to get the hang of things here; but it's worth it. Gotta run now and Happy New Year.

Jim,

I always have to spend a lot of time hunting around for the list of periodicals who do not want their full or excerpted articles copied on to FR. Could you link this from the home page, that way everyone could find it readily, and this will probably save you a lot of aggrevation in the end as well too. I would suggest you have a link to posting guidelines right on the home page.

Thanks

Re Gannet (and, I guess, all restrictions, in general re Fair Use), it just seems this runs so opposite to the Fair Use doctrine of the U.S. copyright statute.

The fair use doctrine allows short quotes and short excerpts of copyrighted works. I assume you abide by this to just keep them off your backs, but how is it that they get this free pass that runs totally counter to the Fair Use Doctrine?

I am sure you have answered this before, and forgive me if so, but it really bugs me that Gannet is acting like the Fair Use Doctrine does not exist.
