Edited on 05/27/2014 11:31:00 AM PDT by Admin Moderator. [history]

Note: Don't post anything at all from the Las Vegas Review Journal or anything from organizations run by Stevens Media, LLC or RightHaven, LLC until the lawsuit brought against us by them is resolved.

Here's an updated alphabetical list of the sites that have complained about copyright violations thus far. The posting program will only allow excerpts and or deny posting where designated from the following sites:

These sites must be excerpted and linked only [300 words or less, 1/2 the words or less for short articles]:

All McClatchy sources must be excerpted and linked.

These publishers have asked us not to allow any material at all to be posted to FR:

05/06/04 -

Received another letter from Gannett Publications, publisher of USAToday, and several other newspapers. Due to contractual arrangements they have with third-party content providers, they have denied our request to allow posting of excerpts. They will only allow the posting of titles and links.

Please do not post full text or even excerpts from the following Gannett Web sites:

GANNETT NEWSPAPERS ON THE WEB:

We will eventually add a link to this list from our posting program. In the meantime, you can find it by searching on "copyright list."

In addition to all of the above, do not post articles written by Maralyn Lois Polak per her copyright complaint. Her column usually appears on WorldNetDaily.

Also, do not post images from Corbis or Getty.

Thanks,

Jim

********Additional

New York Times must be excerpted.

All material from the Associated Press must be excerpted regardless of source (very brief excerpts). AP photos are not allowed.

Photographs, pictures, images, graphs etc may not be posted if the websites are on the lists or added in any of the posts below.

Sounds like they don't want their articles scrutinized by intelligent conservative types. Most of these publications just want to deliver their propaganda to the unthinking, brainwashed masses.

The Washington Times (like Fox News is/was) is one of the "good guys" in that it's reporting tells both sides of the story and not just the leftwing Democratic talking points. Why those two have objected to FR is beyond me.

My concern, as it has been for a long time, is that we don't have complete individual articles to reference once they disappear from their web site. Having to click to get beyond excerpts doesn't bother me (except for paper registration and popup ads) but the lack of being able to retrieve full articles in the future remains a problem that somehow continues to need to be addressed either by the courts ("fair use" of copyrighted material) or by technology via a central clearinghouse accessible to internet users (either for free or for a small fee). If there exists such an accessible database, maybe part of our Freepathon donation could be used to allow FR users to access it in the course of our discussions.

The newspapers are really running scared since the internet arrived,as are the magazines.

They hear the footbeats behind them and they are terrified.

There is nothing anyone can keep hidden today.  A lot of times I find articles about smoking bans in the media.  When I write to them from Maine, they are amazed that a person in MAINE heard about their reporting.

Nothing is sacred anymore.  And what with everyone with camcorders and especially now with cell phones that take pictures, once we leave our house, we become public property.  Somewhere, there are eyes on us no matter where we go or what we do.

That is why I can't for the life of me understand how so many newspapers can tell Free Republic that we are forbidden to use their articles.  We WILL find out.  They can not continually hide behind copy righted laws.  What about the First Amendment?  I wonder which one takes precedent.

Thanks for the update Tonk.

Here's what I did awhile back: saved this link you gave, http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1111944/posts as a bookmark in my Netscape browser's list (Internet Explorer users bookmarks are called favorites).

I rarely post new articles, but when I do, just using the saved bookmark takes me to the newest list. (Only writing this in case others may want to do the same if they don't already.)

He already thinks he is Uncle Tonkin! This baby wants to eat from a fork, drink from a cup, uses anyone's body as a climbing rail to assist him to stand. Can crawl faster than I can walk, and has 2 teeth!! So yes, I suppose if I explained the list to him, he probably would understand. He's awfully smart, you know ! LOL

Hugs to you from our family...

Nana

I hear what you're saying. But I for one don't think FR would need to subscribe.

I've said my question more than once on this thread, addressed to Lead Moderator but haven't heard a response. I think Moderator must have gotten too many requests on this awhile ago.

My idea is this: ok, we all find stories at Google News, Yahoo news, etc. Right?
Most news originates from AP or Rueters, Right?

Why can't we link back to AP or Rueters? Say, you read a story at Google News.

Using 'search' Google News finds the original if you use key words in the seach, or an exact phrase; and also Yahoo usually has the originator, and finding it is similar.

A Google News search on a phrase "in quotation marks" from within the story finds others who already QUOTED WORD FOR WORD the story and then links to the originator.

At least, that's how I find stuff.

SO, HERE'S MY MAIN QUESTION, Jim Robinson. AP and Rueters can't forbid a link to their original stories, can they?

That's the main source, where all media get their stories, as near as I know.

I'm pinging my new media buddy (jjmcgo) here to this thread; maybe he'll shed a light.

To use a for instance, I just went to Google News and saw this posted under headlines. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1489389/20040713/who.jhtml?headlines=true

I used this cut/paste to search "refused to allow him to use my song 'Won't Get Fooled Again' at Google News and saw these other news postings.

Well, (without prior written approval) we cannot post the full text of copyrighted material from any of the publications that have complained so far, and we can't post any material originating from their publications, even if it's sourced from another site. At least we can't do it without getting into another long drawn out legal battle and I do not have the resources or financial wherewithal to fight that battle at this time, so decline to do so.

I know nothing about copyright laws, but I thought there was a site called Lexus/Nexis(sp?) that you could research newspaper articles. Do they need permission?

I'm really uneducated as far as this stuff goes but I imagine Jim Robinson would fight it if he could.
