Concealed-weapons law increases dangers in life
Coulmbia, Missouri Daily Trib. ^ | March 27, 2004 | B. Gray

Posted on 03/27/2004 11:10:14 AM PST by rface

Editor, the Tribune: Now that conceal and carry has been established, I would like to make the public aware of the possible "side effects" of this new bully law. First off, don’t be surprised that if and when you get pulled over by a police officer, he or she comes in full assault fashion with gun drawn and ready to defend his or her life. You’ll have a gun pointed right at you, cocked and ready to fire. Don’t panic and do something stupid, because you might get shot. Obey the officer, keep your hands in sight and move slowly when he asks for your license. After all, he must assume you’re armed.

I’m sure many officers have pondered this situation in their daily duties. I am only assuming this might be the scenario, and I could be wrong, but better safe than sorry.

I will always be against putting more potentially dangerous weapons in the hands of our general public. Less lethal avenues should be sought if you feel you need to defend your life 24 hours a day. There’s something wrong with the inadequate mind that needs to use a gun to feel protected. Seeking help to bolster one’s insecurities would be a good place to start. I know, because for 22 years, I was held hostage in my own home as my ex-husband practiced killing me day in and day out with his beloved guns. It’s a disease of dependence with fear and control its drug.

Baloney! If anything, the officer who pulls you over will know they're safer because the license plate # tells them the car belongs to someone with a CHL and that person has a "clean" record or couldn't get a license to carry in the first place.

The few times I've been pulled over, I hand them my CHL card along with my driver's license and car insurance cards. They're always curious to know what make I'm carrying (K&H 40 Compact).

Then they write me a warning ticket and I'm on my way.

People need to realize that the police usually arrive after the commission of a crime and rarely prevent a crime. Your personal safety if up to you.

I remember in my CCW permit training that the police in the city of Garland, Tx were treating CCW owners to the jows of full felony stops when they got pulled over.

A few years later even the cops stopped this nonsense.

May I just add as a point of personal policy that when I am pulled over- it's rare but hey it happens- I keep my hands in sight and don't make sudden moves.

When the cop asks for my license, I tell him where it is and announce I'm going to reach for it. When he asks for registration, same thing.

It makes the process go alot smoother, no one's nervous, and it has nothing to do with me being armed or not.

I think this lady's a little...mmm... special.

Well, I'll have to agree with her on one point:

I don't like concealed carry.
I'd much prefer open carry.
I've never understood that convoluted logic.

I always hand my CCP to a cop that stops me.
I've only had one that acted nervous, and I think he was about twelve.

Cops know when you have a CCP that you've had some pretty intensive background checks.
That in itself should give them some comfort.

I feel bad that she had a jerk of a husband and is probably a little nuts from it, but it's extremely ignorant to think that everyone who owns a gun acts the same way.

You assume that what she says has some grounding in reality. For all we know, the husband may just have had a duck-hunting gun, and was remarkably restrained, while SHE spent 22 years emotionally and physically abusing HIM until he walked out, and now she's making up dramatic stories to make herself right

Classic case of PROJECTION.

Total crap. I have almost always carried a gun here in Georgia (a concealed carry state.) I have been pulled over numerous times over the years, both here and in North Carolina, when I've had a gun in the car (usually on the passenger seat.)

I always tell the officer as they approcah the car that I have a firearm in the vehicle, although this is only a requirement in NC. In each circumstance, the officers have been friendly and professional. I have never received a ticket in any of these circumstances. And in a few of the cases, my Beretta 92F/CorBon +P 115gr JHP combo becomes a friendly conversation piece, and we end up chatting briefly about various types of firearms and ammunition.

I suggest that the author of the subject article does not know what it is to live in a civilized society.

What garbage. I have a concealed carry permit here in Colorado and have been pulled over. The police when they run the license plate can tell that I have a permit. They usually just cautiously walk up, confirm that I am a permit holder, and then usually just continue on with giving the warning, writing a ticket or whatever. I just place my hands on the steering wheel and keep calm, friendly and cooperative. It's no big deal at all. Any officer who reacted as described in the article would be woefully unfit for duty, unprofessional and extremely uneducated. Whether they like it or not those who conceal carry are among the most law abiding citizens on the planet and the police know that. Geez, what dribble comes out of some peoples paranoid and delusional minds.

This woman is a nut. "There was nothing that I "could" do to protect myself, so nobody else should be able to protect themselves either!"

You're right on but I would change the above "could" for "would".

Whoops. I first read that as...

I reached in the glove box to get the insurance card, my husband's hand came tumbling out.

I was about to ask what you were doing with your husbands severed hand in your glove box. LMAO!

CHL isn't a problem for me except I consider it to be just a seditious source for revenue by our goobermint to rent back to me my RKBA's !

I've been stopped twice for a seat belt and a inspection sticker, DPS and a local yocal. All were professional and polite and just asked where my firearm was and please not remove it during the traffic stop.

But then as a former deputy I always roll down my windows on the drivers side of the vehicle and turn on all the dome lights and keep my hands at 2 and 10 on the wheel with my DL/CHL and insurance slip ready on the dash . It's just a polite thing to do for those who endanger themselves in such a profession. Keeps me safer too for those twelve year old barney bad ass sorts...........:o)

Stay safe !

Of spouses that murder each other, 75% of the victims are men. Have we been lied to, or what?

Some govt studies:

Wives are acquitted of murdering their husbands at 5 times the rate that husbands are (6% husband acquittal, 31% wife acquittal)

Spouse Murder Defendents in Large Urban Counties 59% of spouse homicide were husbands, 41% were wives

You should expect to be arrested by police at gunpoint, and be charged with a crime anytime your concealed handgun is seen by another citizen in public, regardless of how unintentional, innocent, or justified the situation might seem.
You won't be arrested down here if you are not a felon. You will, however, have a very embarrassing confrontation with the police (the severity of which will depend on when and where you are), and you will be asked to leave the premises.
It is not a crime to carry a weapon in the open down here although it is unusual to see one.
I have gone to a restaurant with my family. Forgotten that I was carrying on my belt (it is warm down here most of the year so I usually carry in an ankle holster unless I have a suit on), removed my coat when we sat down to eat. I only realized that I had done this when I went to the restroom and while washing my hands I saw it in the mirror. No one said a word.
I went back and finished my meal.
It also is not that unusual for someone to be armed down here; sort of like putting on your socks.

What a load of crap.

In NC, it is my understanding that when the police send your tag number through that it will flag CCW carriers.

Then the cop knows that the driver he's about to talk to has passed 2 state background checks and 1 federal check. All of the cops I know say they feel better about it.

It's good practice for CCW carriers and all citizens to do the following when stopped by the police at night.

Turn on the interior lights

Lower the drivers window about 4 inches (Just in case you've been stopped by a blue light bandit, plus it makes the cops feel better seeing a bit of glass between you and him)

Place your hands at the 10:00 and 2:00 positions on the steering wheel.

Be prepared to tell the cop if you're carrying and where the weapon is, but don't volunteer informaton.

DO NOT REMOVE THE GUN FROM CONCEALMENT.

The cop should never ask to see it or ask you to retrieve it. If he does, ask him to radio for a supervisor. Rookies have been known to ask to see it, which is a very dumb thing for a cop to do. Why would he want someone to lay hands on their weapon?

I typically don't say a word about it, but hand my CCW card to the cop along with the drivers license. Let him be the one to bring it up.

I answer burglar alarm calls for our office and always carry when I go out to meet the cops, usually I'm there first.

Most don't seem to care and hand the cards back. Some like to talk about guns and I've had some great late night conversations with deputies.

This is exactly the type of person we should be taking self-defense advice from. A woman who allowed herself to be a spousal abuse victim for 22 years.

The woman is a born victim and expects we all are as well.

To B Gray: Go back to England. They will be happy to keep you disarmed. We founded this country on freedom, not security and the nanny state.

BTW, once she's there, don't even think of grabbing a butcher knife or grandpa's sword when the thugs break down your door, or you'll do more time than the home invaders.

I've never understood that convoluted logic.

I understand your feelings, but there are cases of individuals being ambushed who open carry.

One of the cool things about open carry is that the bad guy never knows who's got the piece. Thus, the gentler ones in society garner some benefit.
