SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Yes. It sure seems that way. Maybe I just need a Valium. But then I think about that one threat that the Liberty Bell would be melted in the heat of the fires, or something like that- on one of those jihad posts.

In reference to 1915:

I believe a very basic weapon would still be viable, even if it is over 15 years old. A weapon of the size and weight described in the reports of the Soviet SADM's would not be very sophisticated, and probably would work if the conventional explosives were intact and the circuits had not corroded.

It may not detonate high order, or may partially detonate. Either way, there would be fission, and there would be a nuclear explosion. The only difference would be yield.

I can see the panic evident on a few posts, but I am not going to panic. If it happens, I will be very angry, especially since I have dual response commitments to a lot of the East Coast with my job in emergency management.

I find it interesting a lot of press is out there stating Al Qaeda may have nukes, and a lot of things are happening that make me want to ask questions.

I dont recommend panic, however. An informed approach to the problem is the best approach. Trust in God, be prepared, and remain informed. Thats the best approach I know of.

Reference 1372:

I believe Khan is responsible for a large part of the proliferation of nuclear weapons we are seeing today and have been seeing for a few years now. He ran a veritable black market "Wal Mart" in nuclear technology.

It isnt that much of a stretch to believe he made some special nuclear material or technical assistance available to Al Qaeda, either personally or by proxy. They seem to share a lot of world-view about Islamic supremacy.

I dont say this to scare people. I have no direct evidence of this, but it would appear logical to me.

Press here, click on maps, choose terrorist camps and then your preference - Pak, Afgha, PoK.

http://www.satp.org/satporgtp/southasia/index.html

Map locations are no secret. It's a "tribute" to Indian indecisiveness that they've never bombed them.

They've been known. What's significant is that US media is now trumpeting them, including the WashTimes. Mush can't hide anymore. The screws are being turned hard.
And Powell vists Islamabad soon.

OK, gang..

Here's the $64M question..

IF AQ has nukes..WHY haven't they detonated them yet?

There were some pretty strong statements made about a "backbreaking, order-changing" hit "between the Eids", which has already ended. Then there was that confounded countdown clock, and huge "chatter" complete with pictures of nuke detonations all over the jihadi forums..

I'm inclined to think they DON'T have any, but am also open enough to the possibility that it would be oh so easy to bring ANYTHING into the country today - wide open borders and all.

Something just doesn't add up, but I can't figure it out. (Not trying to be antagonistic to any viewpoints as I myself don't have a handle on which way I really feel about this..but it just all seems so..odd, and something isn't fitting..)

alli : i know one thing , what ever are the weapons that to be used in the "expected" strike , those weapons are INSIDE ur country , the theory of using int air flights is absalutly nonsense .

creeper : i didnt answer u bec i already wrote about that and its a longg subject but okay , i will explain it again ....

MAny of you dont know much about the players of the middle east sceine and the role of every player :

Iran : Its interests join completly with the united states , helped ur country in a very effective way during Afganistan and Iraq Invasions , there are more chances for your country to attack france lol more than the chances your country to attack Iran .

U.A.E , Omman , Bahrain , Qatar , Kuwait , Jordan: Are STRONG allyes to america , no worth to mention AQ presence at those countryes .

Lebanon :45 % of its population are christians , Hizbullah have absalutly no relation with AQ , Israel wouldnt allow its north boarders to get heated , no use of striking it .

Yemen and saudia arabia : Ur country beleive these two countryes are the breading nests of AQ , though the goverments of those two countryes are fighting AQ , your country would do just what Israel didwith Yaser Arafat :
You are not doing the jop efectivly so we will do it ourselves .
But since there are no clear targets , AQ members there are unknown , so ur country will commit some actions but it will be very limited and uneffective ons ... more like a revenge .

Syria : Though its regim is the biggest enemy of AQ but ur country will attack it but not in a invasion way , just air strikes and sanctions .

Out of mid east : Ur country will strike hard the Bashton tribes area at the Afgani/pakistani boarder .

So the choices are : Syria , Bashton areas in a large scale
Yemen and Saudia in a small scale .

But will that hurt AQ ? answer ... diffenetly NO

Now as for AQ and its expectations of the american reaction :

*If u.s attacked syria , that attack would be nothing but a big favour for AQ weakening the Syrian regim , Your country will just comitt air strike and sanctions as your country will not get involve in another land operations ( since its hardly controlling Iraq )
* AQ is sure that u.s will commit actions at Saudia and Yemen .
* AQ called Muslims gerealy and Saudies and yemenese specialy to get prepared and to SKIP there " helpless goverments " and to establish alternative resistence commandership to lead the resistence against america .
* AQ presence at Bashton areas is limited , not more than very few hundred member .
* AQ , since july AQ started to urge every supporter to stay where he is , not to move to conflict areas but to be on alert and to be well prepaired if needed in the future .

ALSO : AQ will frame the strike to be in waves trying to stop ur country of responding , and if that worked AQ put a plan to try to take the power at :
Saudia , Yemen , Jordan , Morroco

Finaly :
1) Threre are absalutly no clear targets for AQ to hit .
2) U.S enemyes are individuals .
3) There are abasalutly no arab/islamic gov that is helping AQ or even sympathic with it .
4) massive revenge actions committed by your country would lead to stregnthening AQ .

Article excerpt

By Barton Gellman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, March 3, 2002; Page A01

Alarmed by growing hints of al Qaeda's progress toward obtaining a nuclear or radiological weapon, the Bush administration has deployed hundreds of sophisticated sensors since November to U.S. borders, overseas facilities and choke points around Washington. It has placed the Delta Force, the nation's elite commando unit, on a new standby alert to seize control of nuclear materials that the sensors may detect.

Ordinary Geiger counters, worn on belt clips and resembling pagers, have been in use by the U.S. Customs Service for years. The newer devices are called gamma ray and neutron flux detectors. Until now they were carried only by mobile Nuclear Emergency Search Teams (NEST) dispatched when extortionists claimed to have radioactive materials. Because terrorists would give no such warning, and because NEST scientists are unequipped for combat, the Delta Force has been assigned the mission of killing or disabling anyone with a suspected nuclear device and turning it over to the scientists to be disarmed.

The new radiation sensors are emplaced in layers around some fixed points and temporarily at designated "national security special events" such as last month's Olympic Games
These heightened U.S. government fears explain Bush's activation, the first since the dawn of the nuclear age, of contingency plans to maintain a cadre of senior federal managers in underground bunkers away from Washington. The Washington Post described the features of the classified "Continuity of Operations Plan" on Friday.

Bush's emphasis on nuclear terrorism dates from a briefing in the Situation Room during the last week of October.

According to knowledgeable sources, Director of Central Intelligence George J. Tenet walked the president through an accumulation of fresh evidence about al Qaeda's nuclear ambition. Described by one consumer of intelligence as "an incomplete mosaic" of fact, inference and potentially false leads, Tenet's briefing raised fears that "sent the president through the roof."

With considerable emotion, two officials said, Bush ordered his national security team to give nuclear terrorism priority over every other threat to the United States.// cut

I have no facts, but if GWB is afraid, that sure tells me something very grave is facing us.

I'll add my 2 cents worth, for what it is worth:

I honestly dont know myself, but I can see how they could have acquired some with the information I have read. I know the Jihad types rant about it constantly.

It doesnt make sense to me that the Jihad types would claim they have them and not have something. They would be asking for their cause to be totally reduced to a laughing stock of historical dimensions. I often wonder if they are acting like Hitler in the last days and are basing the survival of their jihad on the development of "wonder weapons", or if they are using propaganda to instill fear and cause market effect.

I think they are feeling the heat of the US military and need something dramatic to put them back into the fight before they go extinct. Almost beaten enemies are the worst to confront, because they have nothing to lose.

As for why they wouldnt use them, they may have had a war plan to attack in escalating waves. I have seen some evidence of this in terror defendant court testimony.

If they are doing that, it is the largest high stakes poker bluff in recorded history.

There are a million ways they could have one, with Khan, the Soviet "collapse" and unguarded nuclear materials in the former USSR, and a plethoria of other explanations.

I dont rule out technical assistance from former Soviet scientists, Chinese NPA intelligence officers, or a variety of other state sponsors from the usual suspects, as well as the Russian mafia and a variety of underworld sources.

In short, it is possible they have them. I take the threat seriously and hope I am wrong. If I am, I will gladly buy the beer at the end of the war and admit I am wrong.

Right now there is no way to tell.

Remember the casualties depend on the density of the population where a nuke goes off. I have seen the 100K figure, but didn't see anything about the assumption.

Look what I just found:

http://travel.state.gov/nuclear_incidents.html

U.S. Department of State
Washington, D.C.
FACT SHEET

Guidance for Responding to Radiological and Nuclear Incidents

Nuclear Detonations

A nuclear detonation, with the resultant radiation, blast and thermal injuries, would be a catastrophic event. In addition to the nuclear fallout and associated damage to structures, a nuclear detonation will severely disrupt civil authority and infrastructure, complicating evacuations and re-establishment of normal operations within a country. All nuclear detonations have four factors in common: blast effect, thermal radiation, ionizing radiation, and electro-magnetic pulse.

Blast effects are dynamic winds and static overpressure. Dynamic winds are much like those experienced during a hurricane, although more localized and of higher velocity. In addition to blowing down structures, these winds can pick up debris that can damage other objects and persons due to their high velocity. Static overpressure is the increase in pressure when the blast wave surrounds an object. Static overpressure has a crushing effect on hollow objects and can crush buildings and damage internal organs. A 10-kiloton nuclear surface detonation will create a crater 600 feet in diameter, 170 feet deep, and have serious destructive blast effects for 1.2 miles. \

Thermal radiation is the intense heat and light released by a nuclear burst. It can cause temporary or permanent blindness, burns and fires. Burns can be related to the blast (flash burns) or a result of secondary fires. A 10-kiloton surface nuclear detonation will generate serious skin burns for up to about 1.3 miles. Severe eye injury leading to blindness can occur from looking directly at the blast many miles beyond the range at which all other immediate effects occur.

Ionizing radiation is the radiation produced by a nuclear detonation. Outside of the detonation zone this is the most critical issue for survivors. Initially, there is an intense burst of gamma and neutron radiation that travels outward from ground zero with the thermal radiation. Soil below the fireball can also become radioactive. The material from the bomb that is not consumed in the explosion, as well as debris incorporated into the fireball and made radioactive, will return to earth as radioactive fallout. This fallout will emit gamma, alpha, and beta radiation. Amounts of radiation experienced with a detonation depend on the method of detonation (air, surface or subsurface), what the components of the bomb are, and what type of bomb it is: fission (explosion and radiation) or fission-fusion (an initial nuclear explosive component that triggers a bigger reaction/explosion and radiation release). Environmental conditions, weather patterns, rain, wind, and terrain can greatly influence the effects of the blast and the resultant fallout. Electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) is another effect of an aboveground or air nuclear detonation. This intense magnetic field has the ability to adversely affect or destroy unshielded electronic equipment by burning/fusing the internal circuits. A burst of EMP will disrupt and destroy communications equipment. EMP affects all modern electronic components. A strong EMP will nullify radio, television, cell phone, and telephone communications. Ground burst detonations may generate EMP up to 2 miles from the point of detonation.
