SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

I don't know if I posted this before or just in my own head -g- but what if AlQ is trying to 'play' the US against Russia? Make them think this and us think that. AlQ likes to use our own things against us. What if they are manipulating Russia into believing we are going to get them. And then today comes the fact only our country and Russia a re receiving 'powdered' goods.

Here is some Nyquist/Vreeland info, link

I have no idea on the whole red mercury affair. On the one hand, our nuclear scientists gave up on it and I have a hard time believing that Russia is more advanced than us. I believe Russia is more unethical but not more advanced. Don't get me wrong, I do not trust Russia/Putin at all and the bottom line is I don't have a clue about all this.

Also, if Iraq had red mercury weapons, obtained from Russia as stated in some articles, why didn't Saddam use them? Wouldn't he rather use them than end up in a whole in the ground after his sons were killed?

"Hmmm, all this and the Leftists have a problem with our current President in a time of war.

Makes me wanna puke."

I don't have a problem with his handeling of the war, but on the other hand you can't denigh that opening our borders is not a very bloody responsible thing to try to do in this day and age.

AQ may be clever, but they aren't chess players. They aren't in to anything conplex like "playing countries against each other "IMO.

I almost got myself thrown out of work today when one of my liberal colleagues gloated "Well it looks like we might have a new President! Have you seen the poles??"
Such brainless sheeple. It is quite sad really..for all of us.

Aggressive Milestones

The Sandia team set aggressive milestones to demonstrate that it could deliver an online system to meet the immediate needs of the new charter. The team met the first milestone late last year, six weeks ahead of schedule, by placing the interim RSRT online.

Welcome to FR. There's a vast amount of information to be found in these threads. To answer an earlier question of yours regarding the "citiei" to be targeted....

The original threat related to "hits" on NY, LA and D.C.

Ok Milk....let me give it a shot:

Uranium and Plutonium are the major components of a nuclear weapon. Both have extremely long half lifes.

Plutonium has a half life of 24,360 years. It wont decay for a long time, and remains pretty much stable. it would not have lost any effectiveness since about 1988.

The half life of uranium of 713,000 years ( give or take some, I am doing this from memory)

The base elements of a nuclear weapon are the Uranium and the Plutonium. You need these to have fission. To enhance fission you need other elements like Lithium 6 and Tritium to boost fission, but if you dont have them, it will still go boom.

Basically you take the Plutonium and place it in the center. Then you clad it with Uranium and wrap the whole thing with conventional explosives designed in geometric angles, so they will compress the Uranium mass onto the Plutonium and start the fission process.

That is a basic implosion type device. ( very basic explanation)

Then there is a gun-type device. ( basic explanation)

The gun type device simply takes a mass of plutonium and drives a mass of Uranium into it using high explosives. This causes fission.

Honestly, if you have the materials, you can build a nuke in your bath tub with hardware store materials, but it may not detonate "high order". The additives like lithium and tritium are enhancers, but are not need to make a bomb.

Hope that helps

the terrorists would have needed to acquire the technical knowhow (which I believe they did) and the weapons grade material

Can't provide a cogent explanation, but I believe the terrorists can both hire talent and procure special materials from agents of the former Soviet Union. Also, the original weapon can be reconfigured as a lower-yield fission device without the need for the fancy enhancers. Labs in Iran, NK, and (formerly) Libya would be more than happy to lend expertise. The Hiroshima device was much less sophisticated than these portable weapons but was effective nonetheless (ouch!).

Thanks Oorang. Actually I've done quite a bit of reading on Vreeland today. I was just curious as to what others "thought" of the story.

Same thing here in Philly. Usually there are the emergency medical helicopters and several police copters at night, but not consistently, and not flying in a row.

Sources who spoke to DEBKA-Net-Weekly on condition of anonymity report that for a princely sum estimated at US$ 40- 75 million, Bin Laden bought between 12 and 15 kilos of uranium-235, all of which came from Russia or some Central Asian Muslim republic.

If this is true, the master terrorist has enough fissionable material to build between 3 and 5 nuclear devices.

and whats not known to them is even greater.
