Just heard a blugrass rendition of the darkside of the moon...can it get any more bizarre OK, here's a couple. Tiny Tim and Brave Combo doing a swing jazzy "Stairway to Heaven" and a chacha "Hey Jude". Another greatweirdie - Tom Jones and the Chieftains doing "Tennessee Waltz"

LOL! This has got to be a definite sign of the "end times".

Good job on tracking that down!! One could say that Air France fly's by the seat of their pants during these dangerous times putting everyone at risk in that plane.

It is a page turner. This thread of over 20,000. It has about 50 authors, and each chapter is exciting. I have to say, however, that it is starting to get outside the box a bit too much.

If you folks want to be clancy, you have to keep it real.

I will say this, there is a 1000 times better chance of AQ hitting us with a "suitcase" nuke than there is of the Russians striking us during their exercises! (Of course, since 1000 times 0 is still zero -- I suppose we can all sleep well tonight.)

Kudos to the poster on the 1961 Commie Manifesto. Good stuff.

I know the thread is losing its luster a bit when we have posters citing unanmed family and relatives with knowledge of our national defense!

Well, maybe we can ressurect the cold war before November. It seemed to help Republicans anyway.

I am going home for tonight. I look forward to the next chapter of the "Empire strikes Back" tomrrow.

Iron Eagle, I like your sense of humor. Yes, this thread does read like a good "who done it" novel, or more precisely "who's gonna do it" novel. Perhaps that is why some of us here enjoy it. It's like that old saying "it's a mystery wrapped in a riddle wrapped in a enigma", and we are enjoying trying to figure it out.

I will say this, there is a 1000 times better chance of AQ hitting us with a "suitcase" nuke than there is of the Russians striking us during their exercises!

I agree with you on that one. Personally I am more concerned about what is slowing brewing in South America. Not that I am expecting anything coming at us from S.A. soon. But things down there are slowly churning and stewing in the wrong direction, IMO.

I agree with you. I would be very surprised if our military, NORAD, etc. were not monitoring the Russian military exercises. It's only logical that we would.

Wow. In the link to a Russian news website that Cindy posted, one sentence from an article says (regarding three US deaths in Iraq):

"Their deaths pushed to 249 the number of US combat fatalities in Iraq since US President George Bush declared an end to major hostilities on 1 May 2003."

Interesting that the Russian author uses only the total for combat deaths, whereas our own media uses the combined combat and non-combat totals (500+).

The strategic dilemmas of Bush and Bin Laden
by John Thompson

In the coming weeks, we will all know if the "Cave of Darkness" threat was made good in a massive incident in the U.S., and a series of accompanying small operations elsewhere. It may be that heightened security deterred the operation and it may be attempted later, or might even emerge that al Qaeda was simply bluffing.

Regardless, as the fourth year of the American War on Terrorism begins, and as al Qaeda enters its second decade of its ‘war’ on the Western world, 2004 will be a pivotal year for both President Bush and Osama Bin Laden.

While the threat posed by al Qaeda is real enough, this is an election year and George Bush’s administration faces the trial by electorate that all American politicians must face. Does he still have the confidence of the American people? We will know in November. Although the initial signs look positive, 10 months is time enough for disasters and triumphs alike to be conceived and brought to term.

A change in government can always lead to a major change in the priority, or the very policy, of the war on terrorism and--if the year goes by without a 9-11 sized incident (or worse)--then Bush will face the dreadful equation that all authorities do in countering terrorism: Success = complacency = vulnerability.

Lurking in his hideaway (wherever it actually is), Bin Laden has a similar problem. Every attempt to launch a major outrage inside the Western World since 9-11 has failed; usually because of the arrest of key personnel or because of heightened security in Western Europe and North America. They have launched some very significant attacks (notably in Bali and Kenya), his tens of millions of admirers and supporters in the Arab World are starting to ask "Where’s the grief? 911 was very fine, but what have you done to the Crusaders and Jews lately?"

If Al Qaeda is to keep its place, they need to score another enormous success. Otherwise, they might dwindle into a more ordinary terrorist network and see some of the 60 component groups in their alliance branch off on their own.

Bin Laden, no more than Bush, can't afford failure either. One of the reasons why al Qaeda’s attack profile is so muted is that a spectacular error (like the arrest of all its agents before an assault begins) would strip away too much of the aura of infallibility and mystery that their prestige rests on. A more aggressive attitude--attempting more actions in the West and giving more autonomy to their component cells--might succeed, but might also give more intelligence (and targets) for Western counteractions.

Here's another interesting article re: The Cave of Darkness Scenario........snip

As for the attack itself, the references to weapons of mass destruction imply the use of biological, chemical, nuclear or radiological agents. Biological weaponry is very notoriously tricky to use — nobody even noticed the attacks attempted by the Japanese group Aum Shinrikyo in 1995 and 1996, and al Qaeda is unlikely to have been able to produce enough material or to have learned to disseminate an agent. Al Qaeda does have chemical weapons — footage of their tests on dogs, and classroom notes on how to make basic poison gases were recovered from training bases in Afghanistan. However, a successful mass attack requires tons and tons of material and al Qaeda would find it difficult to smuggle enough material into the U.S. to wipe out a village, let alone a major city. Perhaps a false-flagged ship or jetliner might be able to deliver an effective attack.

The threat of a nuclear bomb is real enough, making a bomb is no great trick if one has the kryton switches and weapons grade fissionable materials. Moreover, there may be a couple of warheads missing from old Soviet tactical stockpiles and some other inventories are not subject to much scrutiny.

What is most likely is a radiological bomb. This would consist of a large bomb made of conventional explosives lying at the core of a collection of non-fissionable radioactive materials. When the bomb goes off, all the radioactive material around it would be scattered — but not too far. This would be sufficient to lay down a dangerous concentration of material in the core of a city. The numbers of immediate casualties from such an attack might not be all that high, but there would be tens of thousands of people to evacuate (if not many more) and much panic both in the targeted city and throughout the Western World.

We may be fortunate and the higher level of vigilance may deter an attack in the coming weeks (not that this would stop al Qaeda from trying the same attack later). In the meantime we should do what all prudent military planners do: Plan for the worst and pray for the best.

The spirit of Masoud lives on

by Judi McLeod

Some seven thousand miles away is a lonely grave on a hilltop in the Panjir Valley of Afghanistan.

It is the grave of Ahmad Shah Masoud, a genuine hero to those of many cultures, and forever the enemy to terrorist Osama bin Laden.

As a military commander, so legendary was his resistance to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Masoud was dubbed for time immortal, "the Lion of the Panjir Valley".

The death of Masoud on September 10, 2001 was eclipsed by the world tragedy of the following day. But the death of this Afghan hero is considered a precursor to the cataclysmic attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.

What part of "illegal" don't Americans understand?
by Tom DeWeese

Which side one takes in the great debate over illegal immigration policy is a matter of values.

Do you treasure a strong, independent United States of America as the beacon of freedom in the world? Are you proud to live in a nation where personal liberty and free choice led to the creation of the highest standard of living and the best medical care in history? Do you believe in the free enterprise system? Do you believe in the rule of law, based on the Constitution, as the only way to protect your natural rights? Do you believe that the United States is unique among any other nation or system on earth?

If you hold these ideals as truth, then there is only one solution to illegal immigration. It must be stopped. None of the factors that distinguish the United States from all others can be preserved if this nation erases its borders and ignores its founding principles, primary among which is the rule of law. Ignoring or sanctioning eight million or more illegal immigrants among us will destroy the fabric of the nation.

I guess I'm the only one here, so will post to myself. LOL For those interested in a lesson in radical Islamics and their religion this is a good read................

Literally millions of Arab and Persian Muslims, as well as others spread across Africa, India, Indonesia, and other Muslim population centers, are caught up in the most dangerous theologically-based fantasy since the last century when Germans under Hitler, the Italians under Mussolini, and the Japanese under Tojo yielded to the fantasies that led them into a second World War. Fantasies of past and future empires mesmerized them all.

Of all fantasies, though, the most dangerous are those embedded in religion. For these fantasists, it is not merely Osama bin Laden, the ayatollahs of Iran, or the Palestinian leaders calling upon them, but Allah himself. This is the fantasy of the Islamic Jihad or Holy War. The Muslims---and we cannot tell who among them is with us or against us---have become our enemies and the enemies of Western civilization.

This is why tiny Israel has never ceased to be under attack by Muslims, now calling themselves Palestinians, despite having no claim to statehood, along with neighboring Syria and other nations throughout the Middle East. What is at stake is the very existence of Israel and its Jewish citizens. The same hatred directed at them is the hatred directed at the United States and its allies in the West and elsewhere.

Generations grew up during the half-century "Cold War" with Communist Russia. We understood the Soviets, however, to be rational people unwilling to risk their lives and their nation to impose Communism through war. The concept of mutually assured destruction worked because Russia’s leaders were not crazy. Al Qaeda does not operate by the rules that guide the affairs of most nations of the world. Al Qaeda is not a nation; it is a fanatical religious movement.

Harris points out that "in the fantasy ideology of radical Islam, suicide plays an absolutely indispensable role. It is not a means to an end but the end in itself. Seen through the distorting prism of radical Islam, the act of suicide is transformed into an act of martyrdom---martyrdom in all its transcendent glory and accompanied by the panoply of magical powers that religious tradition has always assigned to it."

Thus, as this new century begins to take shape, we confront an enemy for whom death not only holds no fear, but is embraced. It explains the bomber who kills innocent men, women and children in an Israeli restaurant. The bomber in Bali and the attacks on the United Nations and Red Cross headquarters in Baghdad. It explains 9-11.

It tells us that we must find, capture or kill the cancer loose in the world called al Qaeda.

The greatest danger facing America is a possible nuclear attack from Russia. This danger is not something imaginary. Russian nuclear missiles can reach America in about 30 minutes, reducing America's cities to rubble. Unlike Russia, America has no anti-ballistic missile defenses and no national shelter system. Furthermore, political changes in Russia have not reduced the danger of nuclear war.

With the above info from Worldnet why would Russia need obl and al queda as some are stating here on this thread?

>>When 'will' you be back?<<

I fly back on Wed 2/11.

I've been trying to get on FR, but the connection here is ok, but somewhat flaky.

I'm glad to see the countdown clock is down. Begone foul fear mongering clock! One nasty terror tool expires :)

I guess we need to REALLY fear the next clock. LOL.

Till next time.
