Certainly, but I hope that man would have the sense to bring some plentiful Earth water with him while he's prospecting for Martian water.

I think Kubrick took that shot.

"Mandrake, It's a good thing that we beat the Commies to Mars. Those Martians may well be the only remaining suppliers of good, clean water to replenish our precious bodily fluids."

Thanks for Mars ping. I think we still have a long way to go before we can really say what is going on there. It will take us some time.

The last time we found "evidence" for life on Mars it came from a rock in Antarctica. Maybe we should save some time and start looking for Martian water in the Pacific Ocean.

Maybe we can even find some Martians in Australia. We could just push the evolutionary envelope a little bit.

I was using gold as an example of reasons why others in previous times sought to tame a wild territory - and I expect that it will take finding something worth $$ (who knows what) that it will cause a Rush.
I only propose that the "gummit" provide funding for a rail road. Let the passengers decide what traffic rides.

By looking at that pic (#47)I realize there's actually haze on Mars. Makes it a lot easier to tell something's far away. The pics from the Apollo expeditions would show huge mountains in the background miles away, but most people would think it's just a hill about 100 feet away. The moon really plays tricks on distance perception.

Gene Cernan by the Lunar rover on Apollo 17.

Name a Star and if sovreignty is disallowed, then why do we allow people to claim that they can name stars? Who owns that right? What judicial body will recognize such a name? And if naming a star is okay, why can't I plant a flag as a private citizen?
If I land on Mars as a private citizen, what is to stop me from claiming a Martian Basin, full of some precious metal, as the Territory of PokeyJoe, and vote myself - as the sole inhabitant - subject to the United States Constitution.

Naming a star does not mean sovreignty or ownership. You know that don't you? If that was the case America would be owned by a European map maker.

Forgive me if this has been discussed, but after reviewing the Mars Direct proposals, isn't a logical (soon) step the rapid development of a demonstrator robotic Mars sample return mission to see if it can be done by making fuel on the surface? Seems like a good idea to do that now before spending years inching back towards the moon, etc.

My wife swore I'd never guess what my brother was getting me for Christmas, and she was right. It was the Firefly series, including 3 unaired episodes, on DVD. Pretty cool present. Like you, I loved the series, but figured the humor and story line was too advanced for normal broadcast Fox viewers.

And, we refer to this land as "America" because - . . . (hint: Amerigo Vespucci)
I didn't say naming a star is ownership.
Naming a star, however, is an act that assumes that the name is recognized. This is a power of ownership (of a name), and if a name is recognized (ie: Microsoft, Dell) - then one may protect the name. It's called copyright law.
And it is a form of ownership.

There are 3 unaired episodes? Heck, I'd buy the DVD just to see those!
It's always a bummer to be watching a show and you realize that it's too intelligent for TV viewers and that it's doomed.
I was really disappointed that Sci-Fi channel or WB didn't pick it up. Dang but those TV people are stupid!

The USA signed a treaty outside of the UN before the UN treaty was proposed that disallows sovreignty over the stars and I agree with that treaty. You can not have sovereignty over anything you can not defend. Sort of like our Southern borders.
