By looking at that pic (#47)I realize there's actually haze on Mars. Makes it a lot easier to tell something's far away. The pics from the Apollo expeditions would show huge mountains in the background miles away, but most people would think it's just a hill about 100 feet away. The moon really plays tricks on distance perception.

Name a Star

and if sovreignty is disallowed, then why do we allow people to claim that they can name stars? Who owns that right? What judicial body will recognize such a name? And if naming a star is okay, why can't I plant a flag as a private citizen?

If I land on Mars as a private citizen, what is to stop me from claiming a Martian Basin, full of some precious metal, as the Territory of PokeyJoe, and vote myself - as the sole inhabitant - subject to the United States Constitution.

Naming a star does not mean sovreignty or ownership. You know that don't you? If that was the case America would be owned by a European map maker.

Forgive me if this has been discussed, but after reviewing the Mars Direct proposals, isn't a logical (soon) step the rapid development of a demonstrator robotic Mars sample return mission to see if it can be done by making fuel on the surface? Seems like a good idea to do that now before spending years inching back towards the moon, etc.

My wife swore I'd never guess what my brother was getting me for Christmas, and she was right. It was the Firefly series, including 3 unaired episodes, on DVD. Pretty cool present. Like you, I loved the series, but figured the humor and story line was too advanced for normal broadcast Fox viewers.

I didn't say naming a star is ownership.

Naming a star, however, is an act that assumes that the name is recognized. This is a power of ownership (of a name), and if a name is recognized (ie: Microsoft, Dell) - then one may protect the name. It's called copyright law.

And it is a form of ownership.

It's always a bummer to be watching a show and you realize that it's too intelligent for TV viewers and that it's doomed.

The USA signed a treaty outside of the UN before the UN treaty was proposed that disallows sovreignty over the stars and I agree with that treaty.

You can not have sovereignty over anything you can not defend. Sort of like our Southern borders.
