Fla. Woman Charged With Sexual Relationship With 11-Year-Old Police: Relationship Last For 19 Months

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A 49-year-old music teacher has been charged with having a sexual relationship with a boy she first seduced when he was 11 years old, authorities said.

Carol Flannigan, a teacher at Rolling Green Elementary in Boynton Beach, was arrested Wednesday on six charges, including two counts of capital sexual battery on a child under 12. Authorities said the relationship lasted for 19 months.

Flannigan had developed a close relationship with the boy and his family after he took her music class, inviting him and two younger brothers to sleep over at her Boca Raton home.

The stepmother of the boy, now 13, asked Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office to investigate after finding sexually suggestive text messages on his cell phone Tuesday.

After interviewing the boy, investigators listened in on a phone call the boy made to Flannigan in which she told him to continue lying about their relationship, according to an arrest report.

The Department of Children & Families had investigated Flannigan in 2002, after her husband told a marriage counselor she had described feelings she had when she kissed a 12-year-old boy, according the report.

DCF and police concluded there was no indication of sexual abuse or inappropriate touching and closed that case after the boy said he had "tap kissed" Flannigan but had not felt uncomfortable, the report said.

Law enforcement officials were unable to confirm whether the boy in the DCF probe was the same as the one at the focus of Wednesday's arrest.

I'm not criticising, I just find it interesting that the other day when there was a thread about a 27 year old male teacher and a 14 year old female student, everyone wanted to fry the guy (well, virtually). But when the genders are swapped, it kinda becomes a joke.

I mean on one hand, as an 11 year old I might have thought it would be amazing to get hit on by a "woman." On the other hand, it's like that old joke about grandma slippin' you the tongue.

I never had an experience like this at school. But then again I went to Catholic school and all the teachers were nuns in their 80s or so.

Good point about these teachers being married and yet still molesting.

Some people have been pushing for permitting priests to marry. Looks like that wouldn't necessarily change anything.

Your right about the example, but this is not the case. We have the opposite here. We have a society were a male has sex with multiple partners and is called a stud. A female with multiple partners is called a slut. That has always been the case and most likely will continue for quite some time.

I'm going to use Howard Dean's logic on this one, since he says homosexuality is good and godly otherwise why would God create them.

So it goes to reason that a school teacher having sex with an 11 year old student is also good and godly.

Why won't the press ask him this as a follow-up question?

seems to me, from the several reports of these cases over the last few years..that MOST of them have involved MUSIC teachers.....can it be the "side efects" of giving trumpet lessons?

Not just music teachers. Savannah, Georgia just sentenced a coach to ten plus ten years day before yesterday for getting it on with a 14 year-old. Coach was male coaching girl's softball team. Found a love letter where he told the girl he was willing to risk his job and jail for her. Gambled and lost, I guess.Click for details

Well, in all honesty, I can see a parent having a kid stay with a trusted family friend who is a teacher, before I could possibly see a parent letting their son stay overnight with a cross dressing, makeup wearing 47 year old man, who says that sleeping in the same bed is, "beautiful"!

Not so fast. I was a teacher until I had my kids, and it was made clear to us that the NEA insured us up to $1mil, and would represent us if they believed we were innocent. They decide who they back and who they don't based on their own investigation.
