MIAMI -- The 13-year-old girl has a pretty face and a slight frame. But to Lonnie Grigsby, 52, her sweet appearance masks an unruly attitude. Grigsby, who runs a mini-mart just blocks from the girl's middle school in Little Haiti, says the teenager sassed him one too many times this month.
So Grigsby took off his belt and gave the girl what he thought she needed: a "good whupping."
"She's beyond sassy; she's out of control," said Grigsby, who said he hit the girl after she called him a number of expletives and threw two coins at his head. "I bet her parents never gave her a whupping. She needed it."
Grigsby's actions landed him in jail and set off a firestorm of debate in a community divided by both generational and cultural differences when it comes to disciplining children.

If I ever have kids and if they ever act up, they get the belt. No "time out" Dr. Spock BS nonsense.

To: KantianBurke
We use both. Sometimes the time out is more effective, especially when the neighbor kids are over and are playing with my other kids.

Suprised that they did not try to pin some sexual charge on him for taking off his belt. Try to portray him as being an S&M freak or something.

in jail? amazing ... what a sick politically-correct world we are creating. First off, this is Haiti, already a sick world. Second, you think ANY adult should be able to whoop ANY kid--including teenaged girls, on their own judgement? If I had a teen girl and some 52 year old man whooped her, that man would be introduced to a world of hurt, sass or no sass.

That girl deserved the whipping more than the shopkeeper deserves jail.

If she was so bad why didn't he just ban her from the store?

Hillary Clinton wrote her book about it taking a village, yet we get in trouble for disciplining the neighbor kid who is out of control now-a-days. In my dad's day if a kid deserved a spanking and a neighbor or teacher gave it to them, they would get another if they went home and complained to their parents.

This is a section of Miami called "Little Haiti", not the island. It's kinda like Chinatown in New York. I agree though with you on the rest.

I had a foster kid who had been beaten so often that it was no longer an option (like you could have killed her and she wouldn't have responded).
But time out! Dear lord, you would have thought the world was coming to an end. All I had to do was point to the bench and she got real good real quick.
As for this guy...
It wasn't his daughter.
