SADDAM HUSSEIN CAPTURED
Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been captured in his home town of Tikrit, according to reports.
There has been no independent verification of the news but Sky New's Foreign Editor Tim Marshall says the source of the news is usually reliable.
The US Defence Department says it has had no confirmation of the claims, which come from Iraqi Kurd leader Jalal Talabani, says the Iran news agency IRNA.
Hundreds of exultant people have taken to the streets of Kirkuk, firing weapons into the air in celebration.
A press conference has been announced for 12pm GMT.
In Baghdad, a spokeswoman for the US-led operation notified reporters that a "very important" announcement will be made at the press conference.

With the large number of body doubles Hussein reportedly had trained, I'd think we may want to review the archives and compare facial features to confirm identity. If he's been held awhile this has probably already been performed.
If it's not him, what better way to smoke him out and further reduce his authority than to make his command even more impotent?

I hope you don't mind, Bob, but I've corrected this for you....No, it's a good thing for usThe US, and since it is, it's a bad thing for them. They don't want usThe US to succeed. Good point. What I really meant by 'us' was those of us who want the U.S. to succeed.

They checked scars and showed him to other detainees. They did prelim DNA..I think they must wait on confirmation DNA.
Believe me, the President would not have let this be announced officially without proof.

CNN report: An Iraqi pointed out the actual farmhouse. The U.S. military had a 3 hour window. The first spot Saddam was not there. The second spot behind the trap door of the spider hole bingo. Saddam in black trousers, white t-shirt, long sleeve dark shirt, tired, dirty, identified himself to the U. S. forces and to the interpreters.
Nic Robertson CNN in Tikrit reports there is no celebrations going on in Tikrit. Hardly anyone on the streets of Tikrit.
You think the Sunnis are probably afraid??
