" What say you, BillyBob? Is killing babies "
No I did not say that. And I hope that he is never in position that I would have to feel that way. When it comes to the Constitution He is almost always right. He is tuff and not afraid to say what he believes. He is actually a very good person to have on our side. I just have that one issue that is pretty important to me. I know a guy who is a Christian and he was a history teacher. He had the same views as Bob. He was not for abortion. He just did not think that we had the constitutional right to stop it. Someone finally convinced him that the declaration of independence did give us the responsibility to protect the unborn. He has different views now. But That Aside I can't help but like Bob and respect him.

Thank you, CB. Count me in as contributing; ping when needed. I am, proudly, an American citizen! : )

But as I understand it he is not pro-choice. I need the peace of knowing that any new USSC apointie puts a high vaule on innocent life. It is a core issue with me. And it is gurarnteed by the decleration of independence. Not pro-choice (supports abortion) = pro-life. And I too place a high value on innocent human life - human since conception. Abortion simply as a means of birth-control is murder.

No, "killing babies" is not okay. But I take a position which I believe correct that winds up angering both sides on the issue of abortion. To wit:
The US Constitution is absolutely silent on the subject of abortion. On the other hand, that has been part of the criminal law of all jurisdictions going back to the English common law. It is up to every state to determine its own criminal law.
So if North Carolina, New York, and Nevada reach different decisions on the subject, that is permitted by the US Constitution.
I know that answer will displease some people, perhaps even both of you. But I always start any discussion of political basics with the plain language -- or lack of language -- of the Constitution on that subject.

I don't like it.. but I guess I will have to accept it. Your argument does make sense.

The US Constitution is absolutely silent on the subject of abortion. There's no right to life in the Constitution?
To: Howlin
"You should have been fighting against this before Bush ever signed this. Then he might not have signed it, and He, you, and all of us would not be in the position that we are in now. Ever thought about that. We can run away from our principles, but the consequences of doing so will always catch up to us." Posted by Revel

"I said that the SC would rule parts of it unconstititutional. I was wrong. So were a lot of other people." Posted by Howlin
And you also tried to discourage anyone from fighting it at the time. You just essentially admitted what I said.

So if North Carolina, New York, and Nevada reach different decisions on the subject, that is permitted by the US Constitution. Actually, you and I are in agreement on this issue. If murder is within a state's criminal jurisdiction (and killing an unborn child is clearly murdering him/her) then any laws specific to abortion are the perview of the states. The geographic location (ie. in the womb or out, in a suitcase or out) or developmental stage (5 months after conception, 2 years after conception) of a child is immaterial to the fact that killing him/her is murder and should be covered by the criminal codes of the individual states.
That being said, you didn't answer the question. Is killing babies OK? Is abortion acceptable to you in anyway?

Interestingly enough, the same "all vs nothing" "better than the alternative" "you're helping to put in a dem" arguments are being thrown around here as they were in the CA GOV race threads. You mean like this guy?
To: ModernDayCato
I know exactly what kind of judges the Democrats will install. I prefer to take my chances with Bush and the Republicans. I also know that Dean or any of the other Democrat candidates would be a disaster for America. No thanks, I'll stand by Bush even if I hate some of his decisions.

Beautiful. Despite how depressed I was today over this I had to laugh when I thought about how the Bushbots were going to justify this.
I'm also curious if Jim Robinson still believes that any Pubbie is better than any Democrat. Jim?

Yes.

I agree; I also think what CB impression is will be much more informative reading than the layman's understanding...Constitutional law is quite a specialty.

"If you wish to change it, you have to change not the government, but the hearts of the people who vote for their representives."
And you will never do that by just going along with the crowd. In fact all that does is re enforce the slide.

Who is John Galt?
("Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press..." - Amendment I)
To: FreeReign
There's no right to life in the Constitution? No. However, there is no grant of power to the government to deny anyone their life without due process, and even then only under the strictest of limitations.
The Constitution grants no rights, it only attempts to guarantee the inalienable rights granted us by God by providing for a very limited government with very specific powers.
