A Troubling Influence - An Islamic Fifth Column penetrates the White House
FrontPageMagazine ^ | 12/09/03 | Frank J Gaffney Jr.

Why We Are Publishing This Article by David Horowitz

The article you are about to read is the most disturbing that we at frontpagemag.com have ever published. As an Internet magazine, with a wide circulation, we have been in the forefront of the effort to expose the radical Fifth Column in this country, whose agendas are at odds with the nation’s security, and whose purposes are hostile to its own. In his first address to Congress after 9/11, the President noted that we are facing the same totalitarian enemies we faced in the preceding century. It is not surprising that their domestic supporters in the American Left should have continued their efforts to weaken this nation and tarnish its image. Just as there was a prominent internal Fifth Column during the Cold War, so there has been a prominent Fifth Column during the war on terror.

By no means do all the opponents of America’s war policies (or even a majority) fit this category. Disagreement among citizens is a core feature of any democracy and respect for that disagreement is a foundational value of our political system. The self-declared enemies of the nation are distinguished by the intemperate nature of their attacks on America and its President – referring to the one as Adolf Hitler, for example, or the other as the world’s “greatest terrorist state.” They are known as well by their political choices and associations. Many leaders of the movement opposing the war in Iraq have worked for half a century with the agents of America’s communist enemies and with totalitarian states like Cuba and the former USSR.

We have had no compunction about identifying these individuals and groups. America is no longer protected by geographical barriers or by its unsurpassed military technologies. Today terrorists who can penetrate our borders with the help of Fifth Column networks will have access to weapons of mass destruction that can cause hundreds of thousands of American deaths.  One slip in our security defenses can result in a catastrophe undreamed of before.

What is particularly disturbing, about the information in this article by former Reagan Defense official, Frank Gaffney, is that it concerns an individual who loves this country and would be the last person to wish it harm, and the first one would expect to defend it. I have known Grover Norquist for almost twenty years as a political ally. Long before I myself was cognizant of the Communist threat – indeed when I was part of one of those Fifth Column networks – Grover Norquist was mobilizing his countrymen to combat it. In the early 1980s, Grover was in the forefront of conservative efforts to get the Reagan Administration to support the liberation struggles of anti-Communists in Central America, Africa and Afghanistan.

It is with a heavy heart therefore, that I am posting this article, which is the most complete documentation extant of Grover Norquist’s activities in behalf of the Islamist Fifth Column. I have confronted Grover about these issues and have talked to others who have done likewise. But it has been left to Frank Gaffney and a few others, including Daniel Pipes and Steven Emerson, to make the case and to suffer the inevitable recriminations that have followed earlier disclosures of some aspects of this story.

Up to now, the controversy over these charges has been dismissed or swept under the rug, as a clash of personalities or the product of one of those intra-bureaucratic feuds so familiar to the Washington scene. Unfortunately, this is wishful thinking. The reality is much more serious. No one reading this document to its bitter end will confuse its claims and confirming evidence with those of a political cat fight. On the basis of the evidence assembled here, it seems beyond dispute that Grover Norquist has formed alliances with prominent Islamic radicals who have ties to the Saudis and to Libya and to Palestine Islamic Jihad, and who are now under indictment by U.S. authorities. Equally troubling is that the arrests of these individuals and their exposure as agents of terrorism have not resulted in noticeable second thoughts on Grover’s part or any meaningful effort to dissociate himself from his unsavory friends.

As Frank Gaffney’s article recounts, Grover’s own Islamic Institute was initially financed by one of the most notorious of these operatives, Abdurahman Alamoudi, a supporter of Hamas and Hezbollah who told the Annual Convention of the Islamic Association of Palestine in 1996, “If we are outside this country we can say ‘Oh, Allah destroy America.’ But once we are here, our mission in this country is to change it.” Grover appointed Alamoudi’s deputy, Khaled Saffuri to head his own organization. Together they gained access to the White House for Alamoudi and Sami al-Arian and others with similar agendas who used their cachet to spread Islamist influence to the American military and the prison system and the universities and the political arena with untold consequences for the nation.

Parts of this story have been published before, but never in such detail and never with the full picture of Islamist influence in view. No doubt, that is partly because of Grover Norquist’s large (and therefore intimidating) presence in the Washington community. Many have been quite simply afraid to raise these issues and thus have allowed Grover to make them seem a matter of individual personality differences. This suits his agendas well, as it does those of his Islamist allies. If matters in dispute reflect personal animosity or “racial” prejudice, as Grover insists, then the true gravity of these charges is obscured. The fact remains that while Grover has denied the charges or sought to dismiss them with such arguments on many occasions, he has never answered them. If he wishes to do so now, the pages of frontpagemag.com are open to him.

Many have been reluctant to support these charges or to make them public because they involve a prominent conservative. I am familiar with these attitudes from my years on the Left. Loyalty is an important political value, but there comes a point where loyalty to friends or to parties comes into conflict with loyalty to fundamental principles and ultimately to one’s country. Grover’s activities have reached that point. E.M. Forster, a weak-spirited liberal, once said that if he had to choose between betraying his country and his friends, he “hoped [he] would have the guts” to betray his country.

No such sentiment motivates this journal. In our war with the Islamo-fascists we are all engaged in a battle with evil on a scale that affects the lives and freedoms of hundreds of millions people outside this nation as well as within it. America is on the front line of this battle and there is no replacement waiting in the wings if it fails, or if its will to fight is sapped from within. This makes our individual battles to keep our country vigilant and strong the most important responsibilities we have. That is why we could not in good conscience do otherwise, than to bring this story to light.

>>>Let's wait for his response, which for his sake had better be a point-by-point rebuttal, rather than an attack on Gaffney's character.<<<

I agree wholeheartedly with your last statement, above. I do not agree that we give Norquist the benefit of the doubt.

Norquist better explain his very defensive posture to Gaffney's allegations and do it clearly and concisely. His actions are of a man caught red handed.

We all trusted Ritter, the arms inspector, a while back - until Saddam bought him off and he changed his stripes. Lets see Norquist's stripes. Gaffney's veracity is, in my opinion, pretty close to the gold standard.

You don't like the folks I like. That is your perogative.

Thanks, but uther than Grover, and now Ollie, I have no idea who you like ,a and vice versa, and more to the point, I don't care.

This , all of it, is about facts, at least for me and a good number of people on this site. In this case it is about playing fast and loose with the facts.

Re Ollie, He put his "butt" on some lines, he also stepped over some, and hit a few tripwires that seriously crippled our Administration needlessly (and pretty much permanently). Not unlike Grover.

It is about facts, not personalities. Can you mature to that?

I do not need your stamp of approval to go on in life. So cut the patronizing attitude.

Can you mature over the personalities and the differences on issues?

>>>It's only my contention that I haven't seen evidence that Norquist knowingly was trying to help terrorists gain access to the WH. <<<

Then you didn't read the article. Gaffney makes a huge damning case and Norquist has reacted defensively - not with facts refuting the charges.

No we don't have anyone corroborating Gaffney's charges - but Norquists defensive behavior comes damn close to proving Gaffney's case.

"Singlaub actually procured arms for the contras. And did it without enmeshing President Reagan in a major scandal. North delivered very few weapons to the contras, and succeeded mostly in making himself a celebrity. As I recall Singlaub was OSS, and put his butt on the line in ways that Ollie never did."

Precisely!! And he did so at less cost, legally and dropped them where they were supposed to be; also of the right caliber which, as some of you might know, matters quite a bit. He led the OSS jump for Casey into France, the "Jedbergs", to support the Resistance; he did the same from China, and Japan -- where with a company he took the surrender of the largest US POW camp which was defended by something like a divsion -- to Vietnam, where he ran MACSOGV, and then to the Command of US Forces Korea.

General Singlaub's got more metal in his body than Ollie does on his chest. But the chest is what counts to young men; stick it out and thump it hard.

Ah the young and restless young men; so little they know of what they don't know. But if they persist in their folly, as Blake said, they might become wise.

>>>What is it about Norquist that is so special to you guys that you cannot believe he would sell out to our enemies?<<<

Great point. Didn't we all, at one time, have trust in the chief arms inspector in Iraq, WazzizHizName Ritter? People change stripes for unknowable reasons. Saddam, or some little boys, got to Ritter.

Norquist has changed his stripes - I expect him to explain his stripes, or leave the scene. He actions pose huge potential harm to Bush.

"Then you didn't read the article. Gaffney makes a huge damning case and Norquist has reacted defensively - not with facts refuting the charges. "

First, let's call them radical Islamists, because "only a few" have been, to date, brought up on terrorism charges. As time closes quickly, and more in the NvA web of GreenQuest are charged with terror support, we can revisit Grover's 'accidental odds' -- cold be actuarially challenging!

Anyway re "No we don't have anyone corroborating Gaffney's charges - but Norquists defensive behavior comes damn close to proving Gaffney's case."

Yes, we do, Plenty, starting with the National Journal quoting Grover an dexplaing how he was resosible for getting the ball rolling and the Austin meeting/photgraph with the candidate (see Gaffney's article); to The New Republic quoting uber Arab American spokeman Zogby about Grover's vital role at the WH for Muslims(see also Gaffney'
s article), to the AMC and NCPPF awards, to the NR and WSJ articles, and the rest of Gaffney's footnotes.

And there's the White House waiver list for Muslim Americans to be used for White House outreach (faxed between the WH and Norquist's fax -- apparently put together by Norquist and Saffuri -- whose names appear as #1 and 2, along a few dozen others. One of these is Yaqub Mirza the chief financial officer for the Operation Grrenquest entities above referenced as cited by the US Govt. to be the subject of the largest terror finance investigation in the world. Mirza also signs at least $20,000 of checks to Grover and Saffuri. He was also an investor, along with Desingated Terrorist Yassin Qadi, in the raided and lcosed Boston software firm PTECH. And the list of cabinet meetings, and ...... And that Grover's firm represented Alamoudi, etc.

No, nor was it offered. You could probably benefit by learning however.

Let me also suggest that when you ignore someone's factual responses, not to mention their corrections of your blatent misquoting and mischaracterization of their words,or their gernous offering to you of sources for your edification, it truly is a form of "condescension" if it is done on purpose, and more generally boorish.

Yes! Don't expect a rewarding answer there.

re "Saddam, or some little boys, got to Ritter." Yes, $400,000 in susbidy to produce a "film." But actually, the Russians reportedly got to him first, it turns out, when he was in USEMoscow; they got him a hottie, he left his wife for her. Eventually he left the Russian hottie for the 14-yr.-old window at a Burger King in Albany. The rest, is, well Babylon...

Grover attempted to get elected Kamal Nawash to the VA state senate this year -- a radical Muslim lawyer, who , along with Stanley Cohen, the lawyer for Hamas, is representing Libya & AlQaeda-charged terrorist detainee (and Norquist seed donor; Saffuri mentor)A. Alamoudi. Grover held a fundrasier for Nawash at his house ti summer. Yep, just let's elect more radical Muslim terrorist lawyers to show we have a big tent. (snip) Grover's Islamist-support efforts are serving to "undercut successful conservatives." Starting with George Bush, not to mention John Ashcroft and Frank Gaffney, et al. (snip) ...it's all out there. And a lot more. Google Awash.

I don't particularly like lawyers. I don't like Johnny Cochran but that doesn't make him a murderer because he defended OJ. Now, I don't know this guy from Adam so I did what you suggested, a little googling. Here's what I found out about the this Ismamist manica, this crazed terrorsymp, this danger to Western civilization.

"An immigrant who came to the United States speaking no English, Kamal went on to earn degrees in business and law. Today, Kamal is an immigration attorney and a Partner in a Virginia Law firm."

"Kamal recognizes that his community is entering a time of transition. Many Northern Virginians spend too much time in traffic, too little time with their families, and worry too much about the quality of their schools, their lives and their neighborhoods."

"He is running for the State Senate to represent all the people of his District and give a voice to those who have never been heard. He wants to serve his community everyday of the year and not just during election time. And he wants a Virginia that moves forward without leaving anyone behind."

"Kamal began life as a refugee. One of six children born in Bethlehem, Kamal was nine years old when his family arrived in New Orleans in 1979."

"Immigrating to the United States was not easy. His father spoke some English; Kamal knew only the first seven letters of the alphabet -- "A, B, C, D, E, F, G."

"As a child, Kamal helped his mom and dad operate their family's grocery store and came to appreciate the life of hard- working, small business owners like his parents."

"My parents spent a significant part of their lives in a refugee camp. We lived in poverty for many years. Everything to us was a struggle but we were inspired by the belief that hard work pays off and a good education is the best gift of all."

"Kamal earned a degree in business management while working his way through college in Louisiana. He also earned a law degree from Thomas Cooley Law School in Michigan and an LL.M. in international legal studies at the American University."

"I studied law because of the enormous benefit a legal education provides to those who want to make a difference."

"The only way that we as a people can make a profound difference and improve the quality of life for all Virginians is if all of us make a difference individually." Kamal firmly believes in the principle of public service. Upon completing his education in 1997, he became the Legal Director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), a human and civil rights organization where he worked on behalf of the poor, the disadvantaged and others who needed help managing their affairs."

"My work at ADC enabled me to learn the issues from a hands-on- point of view. I worked on numerous cases involving abused children and spouses; arrests without charges, and the firing and non-hiring of older citizens because of age. These experiences were constant reminders that in our march forward we must leave no one behind"

"Today, Kamal is an independent running as a Republican candidate for the Virginia State Senate. He wants to use his unique life experience and education to serve all of Virginia to make certain that anyone who is willing to work hard is given a fair opportunity to succeed."

"Kamal’s experience should be particularly advantageous in serving Virginia’s immigrant population. He has a personal understanding of what is important to most immigrants. Bringing that insight to Richmond will enhance the lives of all immigrants and all Virginians."

"Kamal Nawash, with the support of his family and thousands of Virginians, is embarking on a journey to make the Virginia of the future full of equality and liberty for all of our citizens."

"Kamal wants to represent all the people and give a voice to those who have never spoken."

"Kamal wants to serve you everyday of the year and not just during election time. And Kamal wants a Virginia that moves forward without leaving anyone behind."

"Kamal is the only candidate in this race who will provide the leadership needed to get things done. Kamal knows that if we want fair share from Richmond, Northern Virginian Republicans and Democrats have to work together."

And what exactly were the aims of this terrorsymp mole?

"Oppose building a professional baseball stadium in Arlington County."

"Kamal will solve our traffic nightmare by expanding Metro Rail to local high density areas such as Columbia Pike, Skyline, Glebe Road, and Seven Corners. Kamal will also create a convenient bus shuttle system that picks people up from within walking distance of their homes and takes them to our existing Metro Stations."

"Kamal wants to protect and provide relief to senior citizens on fixed income from skyrocketing real estate taxes."

"Northern Virginia faces a myriad of important challenges. Challenges like education funding, traffic gridlock, transportation funding, and other important quality of life issues. Kamal will provide the leadership necessary to bring Northern Virginia Republican and Democratic legislators together."

"Kamal will focus on expanding metro transit to existing high density areas such as: Skyline and Bailey’s Crossroads via Columbia Pike, Seven Corners, and Tyson’s Corner."

"Kamal believes that Columbia Pike has turned into a strip-mall, car-based suburban eyesore. Kamal wants to create a walkable community-friendly environment on Columbia Pike. His plan focuses on improved parking policies, cutting taxes for revitalized property and tech firms, and expanding Metro to the Pike."

"Kamal applauds the Commonwealth Transportation Board for its decision to advance a proposal to create special express lanes on the Capital Beltway. HOT lanes, two in each direction, would extend from near the Springfield interchange to north of the Dulles Toll Road. According to the proposal, HOT lanes would be free to carpoolers, buses and emergency vehicles. Large trucks would not be allowed in HOT lanes."

"Affordable home ownership opportunities for all."

"Protect homeowners on fixed incomes from skyrocketing property taxes."

"Kamal wants to make it easier for our senior citizens to teach and volunteer in schools."

"Kamal is proposing a new program that will open computer labs in our schools and community centers for use of our young people."

"Challenging curriculum preparing all students for college."

"Aid to education making class sizes smaller and state universities affordable."

Okay, this guys a politician. But, if he is a terrorsymp, or worse, an Islamist mole sent to destroy our way of life, I bet he's got every militant Islamic from Terre Haute to Timbuktoo helping to get him elected, so I checked his campaign donation disclosures. Funny thing is, I could only find two arabic names on the list, Nawash himself and a guy who I think is his uncle.

His biggest dono to the tune of 100k turns out to be a Republican by the name of Dave Hunt. Seems dave is no stranger to elections himself, having thrown his hat in the ring. Then there's 25k from the Dominion Leadership Trust, a PAC set up to support Republican candidates. There's 20k from the Virginia Conservative Alliance, 25,500 from Virginians for Responsible Government, 20,000 from the Republican Party of Virginia, 20k from "All Children Matter State PAC a conservative PAC and 10k from Committee for a Republican Leadership.

Then there's the donations from known terrorsymp organizations like the Va State Police Assn PAC, the Va Sheriffs Assn PAC, and OH MY GOD, 15k from the NRA Political Victory Fund! NOW I KNOW HE"S A TERRORIST!

A little more digging shows he's received funds from alleged subservise groups like Koch Industries, Bank of America, Coca Cola, Podiatrists of VA, RJ Reynolds, Dupont LandAmerica Financial, American Council of Life Insurance PAC, Citigroup PAC and GE Financial Assurance.

I got an idea. Let's forget all this and HANG GROVER NORQUIST BECAUSE HE HELD A FUNDRAISER FOR THIS GUY.

That ought to do it. No more worries about traitorous Americans opening doors so bad guys in head towels and C-4 can get an audience with the head of intercommunity faith whatever.

My suggestion is, if you're going to fry Grover because he helped this guy, you better get a pan as big as Omaha cause that line looks awfully long.

As I said, I don't know this guy from nothing, I just did what you asked and surfed some. I'm sure you can show a different set of search results, but I think ths demostrates their are two sides to every issue.

Oh, well, there's your tipoff - what kind of American doesn't like BASEBALL. He's gotta be some kind of a terrorist - next you'll be telling me he doesn't care for apple pie. Sheesh.

Why do I keep having this nagging feeling that some of the folks chasing after Norquist actually have their sights set much higher, that Grover's really just a means to their real end?

Better watch out - next thing you know, she'll be buying a prayer rug ;)

I'm more than a little bit suspicious of the sudden appearance of people claiming inside knowledge, and yet who manage to post nothing objectively verifiable other than a bunch of Googled-up junk and old magazine articles. Particularly when those purported "insiders" can barely manage to conceal their personal contempt of the man in question. I think somebody's shilling here - I just don't know who for, or in pursuit of what agenda, but this kind of stuff ought to set off everyone's alarm bells.

Brill, Absolutely Brill.

Yes there are two sides, and which do you think the campaign puff piece shows?

And, Yes, there is a completely different set of Nawash background items, and let's see if you can find them!!!!

Next: He is a terrorist's lawyer, not mentioned, not enought space I guess, and it's not likley to sell well to GOP voters, provincial law and order stiffs that they are, so let's just leave that off I suppose.

Most candidate lawyers, esp GOP ones, are former prosecutors, not defenders of al Qaeda suspects.

But as these are all the same to you, AlQeada and OJ, what the heck.

Did you ever read Sami AlArian's website, or Alamoudi's inerviews about what he did for State Dept. Sweetness and light; hate terror; oppose radical Islam. Huge American Flag behind him on the Homepage. Family man. Terrorist. But until they've both lost their 3rd appeal, let's give them the benefit of the doubt and let their ilk,and their attorneys, come into the WH to promote a little Muslim dialogue.

You really have to grow up. This was your most twisted, incoherent and frankly embarassing post to date. And that's saying something! Maybe you should call Ollie and ask him where he is on the Nawash question.

ps. not only did the good folks of that district show him the door, big time, but I would wager that a) he won't be back b) if he is, he won't be getting any more of that cop money. whaddya say?
