It's the FDNY's "dirty little secret." At least a dozen of New York's Bravest - some of them assigned to look after Sept. 11 widows - have left their wives for the spouses of their comrades killed in the terror attacks, sources told The Post.

In this modern "anything goes" society of ours, how can anyone possibly expect a government department to pass judgement on what these men are doing? If the FDNY had "intervened" in any way, they'd be accused of imposing their morality on people.

Sad but too true. What I especially 'like' is the indifference one of the firemen had to the whole situation. He said he didn't leave his family, he left his wife. Right...

And what exactly did she expect the FDNY to do? Forbid a firefighter from dating someone? As tasteless as it might be for a married firefighter to leave his wife for a widow in mourning, what goes on in the personal lives of city employees is no business of city departments...

I give this 30 posts before someone calls the firefighters that left their families Democrats. The post about the CEO of Boeing resigning turned immediately to Tom Daschle's wife being involved.

Gerry Koenig declined to comment to The Post, saying only, "My life is private - it's not anybody else's business. I didn't leave my family. I left my wife."

Apparently so. Glad his children can read how much he cares about them too

Men aren't that mercenary.

I expect that's generally true. But you would expect that if a man was going to leave his wife and a large family, he'd be put off by the cost from choosing another woman with a bunch of kids. I'm sure that's one reason I don't have too many men chasing me, in spite of all my appealing qualities :-).

I can't help thinking that the deceased's life insurance and the other funds given out made some of these affairs financially workable.
