As reported in Front Page Magazine, http://frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=10699, the Wells College Republicans yesterday published a study showing that Dems outnumber Republicans on the social sciences/humanities faculties by a ratio of 92%/8%.
In response, a Wells prof sent a campus-wide email calling Republicans "stupid" and calling for Republicans to be forcibly lobotomized. See press release below from the Wells Republicans.

Wells College Professor: Republicans Should be Forcibly Lobotomized
Prof Labels Republicans Stupid
College Republicans: A Conservative Prof Saying Similar Thing would be Gone

AURORA, N.Y. (Nov. 7)--Responding to a study showing a gross imbalance of Democrats over Republicans on the faculty of Wells College, located in Aurora, NY, a Wells professor distributed a campus-wide email calling for Republicans to be forcibly lobotomized and labeling Republicans stupid.
On Thursday, November 6th, the Wells Republicans issued a press release describing the study they had conducted of the political party registrations of the members of the social sciences and humanities faculties at the college. The study revealed that members of parties of the left (Democrats, Greens, Working Families) outnumbered members of parties of the right (Republicans and Conservatives) by a ratio of 92%/8%. The online FrontPage Magazine promptly picked up the story. See article: http://frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=10699
Responding to the press release and study, Wells Professor Tom Vawter sent an email to all members of the Wells community calling Republicans stupid. He closed his email with this quote: Lobotomies for Republicans: It's not just a good idea; its the Law! --Yellow Dog.
Wells Republican Chairman Kristy Lee Hochenberger, a junior from Syracuse, NY, responded to Vawters comments: We are outraged by Professor Vawters comments. Calling Republicans stupid is wrong and misguided. Calling for all Republicans to be forcibly lobotomized is frightening, said Hochenberger.
A conservative professor saying a similar thing would be gone. If a professor made an analogous comment in response to a press release from a liberal womens group, he would be out of a job by sundown. Cries of hate crime, threats of violence and misogyny would echo through the land. Feminist and liberal leaders would be flying into Aurora from around the country to support the beleaguered students and call for the punishment of the professor. The national media would focus on the story.
Added Hochenberger: In yesterdays press release, we cited the experience of a number of Wells students who are reluctant to express their Republican or conservative views, given the intimidating atmosphere that some of the liberal professors on the faculty have created. Prof. Vawter has unwittingly given a perfect illustration of the kind of intolerant, intimidating attitudes that the Republican students described in yesterdays press release.
Concluded Hochenberger: We call on the Wells College administration, and in particular Wells College President Lisa Marsh Ryerson, to condemn Prof. Vawters intemperate language and to take measures to ensure that Republicans at Wells will be free to express themselves without fear of this kind of hateful and threatening response.

Awww, shucks... I'm just a loneconservative, one of the few holdouts here in the "People's Republic of Park Slope".
What I FELT like saying was "If I had a lobotomy, could I come teach at Wells???"

Good Luck, any attempt to apply the same "standards" will be meet with opposition, and possible expulsion.

>>>>>Wells College Prof: Republicans Should be Forcibly Lobotomized Would this make them stupid enough to sign up for Professor Vawter's courses?
It's probably a prerequisite. If not, it might be the final exam. After taking his course, you are, in effect, lobotomized.

Sent the following to the President of the college:
Dear Sir,
I was appalled to read the press release from the Wells College Republicans regarding the statements of Professor A. Thomas Vawter.
Calling Republicans "stupid" and needing to be "forcibly lobotomized" shows that Vawter has all the debating skills of a rather slow adolescent rather than a college professor. As a biologist myself, I feel that his remarks, which he had the poor taste to broadcast over a campus wide email, to be an insult to our profession and to scientists as a whole. He has shown himself to be an embarrassment to both your college and the academic community.
The reported repression of the diversity of thought on your campus certainly makes it unworthy of consideration for my children when the time for the selection of colleges comes up. I certainly would not subject them to this level of repression or harrassment.
I would like to know if Professor Vawter will be censured in any way, and would, at minimum, very much like to see a public apology from him as a small step towards repairing the damage he has done to scientists and free thinkers everywhere.
Sincerely, (SpinyNorman)

Its a joke. He was not serious. If we get offended by this type of hyperbole then we are just as "PC" as the liberals. Free Speech will then be attacked at both ends of the political spectrum. I thought conservatives had a sense of humor. What happened to that?

Great job, Spiny! You will really get the attention of the President with your indication that you wouldn't consider sending your children to Wells. As you know, that is exactly the kind of thing college presidents, particularly at small schools, worry about.
Your credentials as a biologist give you added credibility.
The reasoned and civil tone of your message make it much more effective than a rant.

You're right that he is not serious in the sense that no one thinks he is actually calling for legislation that would require the lobotomization of Republicans.
But the hostility towards Republicans that he expresses is no joke, nor is his description of them as "stupid." There's no question that, as the Wells Republicans described in their initial press release about the lack of faculty political diversity, there is an intimidating atmosphere in many of their classrooms.
Vawters's comments perfectly illustrate the kind of problem they described, and I think it's appropriate to bring that to people's attention.
If you or your child were a young student in Vawter's class, in which he called Republicans stupid and called for their lobotimization, I'm not sure you would find it funny.

well....I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. Sometimes if you homebrew carelessly, you get both.

Actually I think that kind of hostility works in our favor because it is so virile and excessive. It should actually be encouraged. What we need is not to call attention to these types of statements by pretending to be offended, but to call attention to them by making them the object of our ridicule. The more these types of statements get covered in the media, the more it will turn off moderates who otherwise might be tempted to vote democratic.
Painting Schwartenegger as a right wing wacko was what turned the tide in the recall election for Schwartenegger. People who said, hey he thinks like me, were not too happy when whack jobs like bustamante tried to paint him as a Nazi.
Let's not pretend to be offended by thse silly remarks. Lets just laugh and point fingers at their stupidity.

This is a good example of a "tolerant, open-minded, and enlightened Liberal thinker."

I am a student Republican at Wells, and sent several emails to the campus after the release of the diversity study and once people started reacting so negatively. It was to one of my emails that Professor Vawter replied with his call for lobotomies for all Republicans. Unfortunatly, this is not an unusual comment of his. I was enrolled in one of his classes last semester and dropped because of his bigoted, biased manner of teaching.
After the release of this study, the campus has literally errupted. I hope that this leads to some positive changes in the appointment of faculty here! Most students tell me that if I think my views need to be addressed in class then speak up. If only we could put them in the situation where conservative students are now! I think they would sing a different tune if they were placed in a classroom of overwhelming conservative ideology!
As to Professor Vawter's comment that Republicans are stupid, I merely replied that when my debate opponents resort to name calling, I know I have won the debate. That's always the case, and once they get to that point (which won't take long with liberals!) You needn't bother to argue with them any further.
Thank you all so much for your supportive responses, they feel to great to hear on this tumultuous campus!

sounds like hate-speech to me.
I feel threatened, even - sounds to me like a terroristic threat, a federal felony.
How do I press charges?
I'm speaking only half in jest, Mike.
