Syria Threatens to Attack Israel's Golan Heights

By Reuters / INA

London---October 25.....Syria will strike back if Israel attacks again, and could hit Israeli cities and towns in the Golan Heights, Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara said in a British Sunday newspaper interview.

Syria did not retaliate after Israel raided what it called a "terrorist camp" near Damascus earlier this month, its first strike on Syria in three decades.

"After we were attacked, we acted in a responsible way and went to the United Nations, and a majority of our people supported that," Shara told the Sunday Telegraph.

"But if we are attacked again the people will not stand for it, and we will have to carry out the will of the people," he said.

"We have many cards that have not been played. Don't forget there are many Israeli settlements in the Golan. I am not exaggerating but I am describing things as they might happen."

Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and annexed the territory in 1981. The two countries are officially still at war.

Israel struck Syrian territory on October 5 after a suicide bomber murdered 20 people in a beach restaurant in the northern Israeli city of Haifa.

Israel said its target was a training base for Palestinian terrorists.

Palestinian terrorism struck the Israeli port city of Haifa, murdering 20 people in a restaurant. Five children were reported dead. Picture above, an Israeli child, clinging onto life, is rushed to hospital.

Syria has come under increasing pressure from Washington to crack down on Palestinian terrorists.

Washington has long included Damascus on its list of states that sponsor terrorism, and the House of Representatives voted this month to impose diplomatic and economic sanctions on Syria for as long as the White House considers it a terror supporter.

The Senate must pass the bill before President Bush can sign it into law.

Shara told the Sunday Telegraph the government of President Bashar al-Assad had shut down representative offices of Palestinian militant groups Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command.

Shara also said Syria was unable to stop militants from crossing into Iraq to attack U.S. troops there.

"They are very determined and many of them dream of seeing an American tank," he said.

I think it very likely that Assad is the figurehead of a government that is actually controlled by his father's cronies. He is in no way suited to be a political leader, either by inclination, experience, or brains.

AND, a senior official of Syria's government deliberately said they would target Israeli communities -- civilians, not military targets.

Syria: "Yup, we're terrorists, too, and proud of it ...... huh? What is that? That sound. That ... " KA-BOOM!

People ignore the fact that we didn't just take out Saddam; we flanked both Syria and Iran.

This states the case so perfectly that I'm surprised we haven't heard it from anyone in the Bush administration when answering critics of the recent war.

In order of importance, I personally place this flanking manuever ahead of removing Saddam in terms of our own long-term security interests.

And I say that as one who considered the removal of Saddam to be absolutely critical.

Ya Farouk, habibi, we understand your problem and want to help. If every Syrian who desires a look can't come to Iraq to see our tanks, we can bring our tanks to them in Damascus. Always willing to help, be seeing you soon.

I find this very plausible, as I do the notion that whatever his intentions, he is severely constrained by internal Syrian politics. For practical purposes, though, it makes little difference whether Assad is a dictator or a hand-puppet - if Syria threatens Israel, the threat will have to be dealt with.

4 Strikes - You're Out? "...For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof..." Amos 1:3

Frequently referenced, is the above passage in Amos, concerning coming judgment on Damascus. Many are aware that Syria, has attacked Israel in 3 major wars since Israel became a nation again in 1948. Could it be that Syria, will actually attempt a 4th time to do great harm to Israel and in turn be dealt this extreme judgment from the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob?

That being the case, you have to wonder how smart this kind of bluster is.

Or wonder how many of Saddams toys he has...

Israel's response: "Feel lucky punk? Well, do ya?"

Do you suppose all those Israeli soldiers will trade their weapons in for Dirty Harry .44 magnums?

"Me too. I can't wait for the Israli's to just bomb the hell out of those dirtbags who have been killing their kids. Nuke'em."

Nuke em is exactly what I think will happen the next time the Isrealis and Damascus go at it.

God have mercy on this planet when that happens!!!

I'd give my eye tooth to see Syria attack Israel.

That's something I'd sit back with a bowl of popcorn to watch, except for the problem that by the time the popcorn gets done popping, it might all be over already.

I too would like to see Syria, Lebanon and Iran both attack Israel!

HA HA HA HA!

We might loose about 1/2 an hour of the World Series telecast to cover the war from start to end.

Would solve alot of terrorsist problems.

When I was over there they seemed to favor large-capacity semi-autos. The ones who weren't carrying Galils or M-16's, I mean.
