Torre has a solid core of position players, the best closer in baseball, clutch hitters and experienced starting pitching.

The latter is fading. Clemens is gone, Wells may have one-two years left. Weaver is an honorary Cub, Mussina, despite tonight, is a choke artist, and Petite is getting old.

With his salary he needs more than just stats, he needs to lead the team to sniffing distance of the promised land and be a strong performer in the clutch. At half his salary he'd be a great player, with that salary he is grossly overrated. Compare him to Pudge's 500 batting average with runners in scoring position, that's clutch, A-Rod's not clutch, and as Juhn Buchegraz says: clutch is everything in life.
