Let’s Scrap the Presidential Debates
NewYork Times ^ | Aug 3, 2020 | Elizabeth Drew

Nervous managers of the scheduled 2020 presidential debates are shuffling the logistics and locations to deal with the threat of the coronavirus. But here’s a better idea: Scrap them altogether. And not for health reasons.

The debates have never made sense as a test for presidential leadership. In fact, one could argue that they reward precisely the opposite of what we want in a president. When we were serious about the presidency, we wanted intelligence, thoughtfulness, knowledge, empathy and, to be sure, likability. It should also go without saying, dignity.

Yet the debates play an outsize role in campaigns and weigh more heavily on the verdict than their true value deserves.

"I know they are trying to play it “safe” because they think they have a lead.

They know darn well they DON'T/ have the lead which is why they want to play it safe...with the help of the media.

She is actually more of an associate in the dog showing world. We know to stay away from politics in our conversations.

“If the format and questioning is controlled by a partisan press, absolutely.”

Don’t forget giving a un recorded campaign contribution to the demonkrap by providing the debate questions in advance of the debate.

“Joe Lockhart, Clinton’s former press secretary, said today that Biden should not agree to debate Trump because “Trump lies.”

I guess the public did not latch on to the previous “no debate” NYT idea - no debates unless Trump releases decades of personal tax returns.

A perfect example of whatever issue never being the issue. Everything must serve the glorious revolution in the leftist mind. This means positions on issues can flip in an instant if need be.

Let’s keep Biden hidden in his basement until after the election. It is the only way he can win.

Yes! You ever look at that thing? There’s a ton of political videos, a lot of pro Trump, a lot of campaigning. I’m not saying I believe she works for Biden, but it’s possible. Here’s one Trump supporter who is pretty good........

It seems that the New York Times has changed its mind since four and eight years ago.

I wonder what is different this time?

The New York Times, September 30, 2008: Though an Experienced Debater, Biden Is Often Tripped Up by Spontaneity:

Excerpt:

...The Democrats held 26 debates during the primary season. Mr. Biden, of Delaware, participated in 14 of them before he dropped out of the race Jan. 3, after he came in fifth in the Iowa caucuses. That would seem to give him a huge advantage going into Thursday’s vice-presidential debate with Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, who has never debated on the national stage...

...A review of Mr. Biden’s debate performances shows him to be deeply knowledgeable across a range of topics, reflecting his nearly four decades in Washington, where he is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

New York Times, October 2, 2008: Cordial but Pointed, Palin and Biden Face Off:

Excerpt:

...Mr. Biden, a six-term senator who has twice sought the presidency, remained forceful and composed against an opponent who proved difficult to attack, given that she is a newcomer and a woman in an arena long dominated by men.

The New York Times, October 12, 2012: Show of Teeth Spurs a Debate Over Biden:

Excerpt:

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s smirking, aggressive performance during the vice-presidential debate on Thursday could be seen as a message for his boss: Here’s how you do it...

Mr. Obama said late Thursday that his running mate was “terrific” and made a “very strong case” during the debate with Representative Paul D. Ryan, Mr. Romney’s running mate....

Mr. Biden’s wide grin and energetic demeanor prompted cheers from Democrats who had been desperate for the kind of in-your-face political rumble that Mr. Obama did not deliver a week ago.

The New York Times, October 12, 2012: Night of Withering Ripostes, Mostly Delivered by Biden:

Excerpt:

...It was a sharp and spirited debate, with both candidates delivering some lacerating blows, but Mr. Ryan at times seemed disconcerted by the sheer blowhard intensity Mr. Biden brought to the night. Mr. Ryan tried to be respectful, listening to the vice president with a tilted head, choirboy smile and puppy-dog eyes, but he showed his irritation when Mr. Biden kept interrupting to attack his policy on Medicare. “I know you’re under duress,” he told the vice president, prompting another belly laugh.

For Mr. Biden especially, the night was his chance to relive past debates and unleash his inner barroom brawler. He had to be contained and courteous when he debated Sarah Palin four years ago, lest he look like a bully. This time he let loose. And unlike the courtly Mr. Bentsen in 1988, Mr. Biden turned his temperature up, singeing the young man across the table with patronizing grins, but mostly withering retorts. His interruptive barrage was as relentless as his silent mugging for the camera.

The New York Times whants to do away with presidental debates because they know that Joe Biden will come off looking like an idiot. The New York Times is an arm of the DNC.

President Trump should insist upon debating Biden’s VP pick with the truth being that person is going to be President as soon as they can 25A Biden. Until then they will, at least, be the power behind the throne.
