Four in 10 Republicans want to see Trump primaried? His approval rating within the party is normally something like 80-85 percent. Who are the GOP voters who give him high marks for his performance but also want another option on the menu two years from now, knowing how badly a serious primary challenge might weaken him in the general?

Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) is so virulent, the so called “republican” anti-Trumpers would prefer to lose to a democrat than see Trump win. TDS is far worse than some conservatives who used to claim Trump is not a conservative and that they prefer to abstain. Y’all remember them?

To Bill Kristol - there is no credible domestic political challenger to Donald Trump within the Republican party.
At this point, all of Trump’s challengers are going to have to be non-Republicans. Not that any of them stand much chance in 2020.

I hate to say “I told you so -or I already knew that”..
but I first saw Trump running a meeting of 100+ managers of all his hotels & golf resorts at (IIRC) Mar-a-Lago 10+ years ago. It was being televised on Golf Channel. I was so impressed with his ability to communicate with sub-ordinates, which was smooth and inspirational without being bossy or critical, that I wished he was the president instead of George W Bush.
When me and wife attended his campaign rally in Everett, WA, I came away with the conclusion that this man will win. Washington is a solid blue state, yet there were 10,000 enthusiastic supporters inside the Xfinity arena (which broke a 11 year record for attendance there) and there were 8000 people outside the arena who could not get in. We had to stand in a line multiple blocks long for 3 hours to get in the arena. There never has been another American politician in 75 years who can make the audience love the speaker without boring them during a 90 minute speech.
Lately I have noticed a few blogs by Allah-P which are actually not so critical of Trump. May be he needs more clicks. But rest assured, those are few and far in between. That man/woman/It never lets a news item go by which can be spun as bad for Trump.
I recall hearing exactly the same thing more times than I can count that "Trump will never be elected a president", including from such stalwart republicans as Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, and many other senators.
But Barack Hussein Obama was NBC? Born to underage American mother and Kenya citizen father with a questionable BC? If that did not matter to congress, SCOTUS and American voters, who will stop Haley or Haris? You??

I agree with your premise that Hillary is a much bigger criminal than Kamala Harris can ever hope to be.
But now she actually works for Trump and doing a splendid job as UN Ambassador. If Trump admires her, that is a big plus.

I don’t expect a strong primary challenge to Trump because that will just GOTV for MAGA voters. That’s the last thing the GOPe want because that will affect down ballot races. Instead the progressive Republicans will run somebody third party in the general. Like Flake and/or Kasich.
