Donald Trump Dares Ted Cruz To Criticize Him In Public
TPM ^ | 12/11/15 | Caithlin MacNeil

Posted on 12/11/2015 5:40:01 AM PST by VinL

One day after a report that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) questioned Donald Trump's "judgement" in a private event, Trump called out Cruz for criticizing him behind close doors but refraining from negative comments in public.

Looks like @tedcruz is getting ready to attack. I am leading by so much he must. I hope so, he will fall like all others. Will be easy!

.@tedcruz should not make statements behind closed doors to his bosses, he should bring them out into the open - more fun that way!

Cruz has so far refrained from bashing Trump in public. After Trump announced his proposal to ban Muslims from coming to the United States, Cruz disagreed but stopped short of condemning Trump's remarks.

But the Texas senator spoke about Trump and Ben Carson during a Manhattan fundraiser on Wednesday, according to the New York Times.

"Who am I comfortable having their finger on the button? Now that’s a question of strength, but it’s also a question of judgment. And I think that is a question that is a challenging question for both of them," Cruz said of Trump and Carson.

Cruz has started gaining on Trump in the key primary state of Iowa, which may be making Trump uneasy. The real estate mogul has a habit of attacking his Republican rivals when they rise in the polls, as both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal noted this week. Trump may have released his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the country in an attempt to boost his support with evangelical voters in Iowa.

What was Trump’s career and how did being a Democrat until recently help him in those pursuits?

Romney was (rightly) rejected by conservatives in 2012 because he was the grandfather of Obamacare and previously held positions that were too liberal for most conservatives. Now, Donald Trump, who has praised Hillary Clinton, donated to her campaign and has only started espousing conservative ideals over the past year, SOMEHOW passes the conservative test because he's a loudmouth populist???

Ted Cruz IS the conservative we've been waiting for! Put your emotions aside for a moment and use your God-given common sense!

Amen Brother Freeper.

In 2008, the Republican party left me when it nominated John McCain (who was officially endorsed by then-Democrat Donald Trump), but I remained in denial for some time. It went downhill from there -- Romney was even worse than McCain, and I didn't think that was possible.

Donald Trump switched to Republican in 2009 right as the GOP became the top-tier venue for McCain and Romney, and right as millions of life-long Republican conservatives were quietly turning away from the party in disgust. In 2008 - 2012, Trump apparently found much to love in GOP; he supported both Romney and McCain.

Trump is the wrong guy for the White House and the wrong guy for conservatives. If the Republican party considers him the right guy, then the Republican party is as useless as a shark without teeth.

I'm in the camp of not seeing Cruz's comments as being necessarily critical, but if Trump's going to have a big reaction to it, he's pretty much underscoring the point Cruz was making.

YES indeed.

It's the twitter comments -- taunts, it can be argued -- that cinches it. This is not a media-stirred controversy, it is a Trump-stirred controversy using Twitter as a spoon.

For you Trump supporters, in case you forgot: at the link, photo captions of Trump's Twitter posts:

Looks like Ted Cruz is getting ready to attack. I am leading by so much he must. I hope so, he will fall like all others. Will be easy!"

... AND ...

Ted Cruz should not make statements behind closed doors to his bosses, he should bring them out into the open -- more fun that way!

Oh, but poor Trump, he was attacked and he's just defending himself!

That’s how we got Poppy Bush, who thinks ALL his kids should be President.

That’s it in a nutshell. Cruz is going to lose the VP if he ever had it.

Trump will need Cruz for conservative bona fides if he is to win. Being bombastic and flamboyant may work with the LIVs, but check the likely voter polls. That is what has the Don worried, with Cruz hot on his tail, and even ahead in some polls.

Who else would he choose? What is your suggestion? Maybe Mr Trump could have an Apprentice-style reality show to determine his Veep. Trumpheads are just like the media, inasmuch as they go after who they are most worried about, and that is Ted Cruz. Really, all this vitriol over a small dig by Cruz, talk about thin skinned. And now, ready to throw out the baby with the bathwater over it. "Boo-Hoo, Ted said something that might be mean about the Don, so now I don't want him as Veep". If Trump was smart, he would use the quote as an opportunity to re-state his position and reassure potential voters that he does have good judgment. Instead, he says I double dog dare you to meet me outside after school in the playground, ironically reinforcing what Ted was alluding to. Idiocracy, here we come.

Now there you go again. I guess you are 100% correct. I will vote for Trump and more Kelo decisions. Can’t be snarky about someone now, can we?

Everybody seems to think that D.T. is the winner, when we are just completely warming up. I see the strength of him verbally hitting the heart of the matter to the American Peoples’ gut instincts regularly, as more than admirable + SHARP. I’d Prefer Ted Cruz in the long run. Just to pose the question: Who could D.T.’s people hire after (if) he gets elected to discern who gets placed at every agency? Hmmm? At least T. Cruz’s Camp has people that are keeping that in mind. I don’t believe D.T.’s campaign people have even considered that fact yet. Outsider of Wash. Businessman and successful yes, but WHO decides to recommend WHO D.T. finally wants placed as Chief Of Staff? WHERE do they draw them from? These are things I ponder.

Well said.

To me elections are secondary to constitutional amendments. While the Document is perfect, it’s the interpretation of that document that matters.

We need to amend it with ‘sunset triggers’ that help our nation deliberate and ‘clean house’ and then return to perfection. For example ...

BOLD SOLUTION: Constitutional Excoriation

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/3225815/posts

As people fester with impotent rage [at least until Trump came on the scene], we have a golden opportunity that another group of conservatives had. Remember the New Deal? It was not as popular as reported. FDR inspired the ‘Term Limit’ amendment [for presidents]. Congress also passed legislation to prevent packing of the courts, but that too could probably have been a constitutional amendment as well. [snip]

... we’re not talking about ‘narrow majority’ tyranny but rather a constitutional amendment would require THREE out of FOUR states to support it. If three out of four of our states are evil, then we’re lost as a nation anyway [as Mark Levin says]. So what sensible person wants us to be paralyzed in fear of 3/4ths of the states?

And I believe that three out of four WILL support some manner of this idea [probably a humdrum spin-off unfortunately]. And when the overwhelming uber-majority of states support an excoriation hearing, let’s see which congress critters object to the idea. [Write down names for the next primary.] And let’s see which members of the Ruling Class try to hide behind congressional rules [which can be suspended with the low bar of a simple majority].

The STATES can manage this hearing collectively and judiciously, and the verdicts can be creative and ribald hazings. But make no mistake — people don’t want conventional trials with all the legal baggage that goes with it. In our hearts every patriot among us yearns for subjective common sense to win the day for a change! [snip]

For starters, we could suggest an ‘Excoriation Hearing’ of the Obama Administration, [including Loretta Lynch], Lois Lerner, anti-originalist ‘justices’, Jamie Gorelick, Bill Ayers, etc.

But also the Fred Phelps activists [God-hates-bleeps], NAMBLA, ACORN. the KKK, skinheads, US Nazis, Black Panthers, New Black Panthers, La Raza, re Conquista zealots, the ACLU, FAnnie/FReddie, the credit rating agencies that deceitfully stamped ‘AAA’ ratings on bad debt, fraudsters who funnelled tax money into corrupt schemes, the most radical Islamic fanatics of our nation, the ‘carbon credit’ fraudsters, the Southern Poverty Law Center, US flag descecrators, zealot prosecutors who agitated the maximum sentence of the Philly 5, and last but not least — SOROS and his operatives. [snip]

Anyone who can’t recognize the same old Washington over and under tactics that have gotten us to this sorry point in our nation in Cruz’ remarks to his owners..oops...donors just hasn’t been paying attention.

Ted Cruz’ remarks about “giving Trump and Carson big bear hugs” and “smothering them with love” for the benefit of the press and public is what set Trump off. But it seems those snippets have been mysteriously sliced from most of the recordings that are being circulated. Go figure.

Cruz spoke at a Manhattan Fundraiser knowing there would be coverage via cell phones. Much ado about nothing. What did Trump speak to the black preachers about behind closed doors? maybe he swayed them by telling them about all the money he donated to Clinton or that Oprah may make a great VP.

Interesting...

You’re saying (because, I’m sure Cruz himself told you...Fail!) that Cruz KNEW there would be coverage via cell, at his Manhattan fundraiser. Hmmm....so, I guess, according to your ‘inside knowledge’ of Cruz....that he wanted the questioning of Trump’s judgement to get out.

Okay. Got it. Much ado about nothing...

You sound jealous about the meeting Trump had with the black preachers group. Don’t be so twisted up about it....Cruz has likely had plenty of meetings with Glenn Beck’s ‘pastors’....maybe he swayed them with talk of PAC $$ pouring in from bankers and BIG oil (oh, wait...Glenn Beck’s BFF pastor friend OVERSEES Cruz’ PAC’s...and Cruz’ dad marches with Glenn Beck) .... so, there’s that YUGE Glenn Beck connection :(

Yes I have. But Cruz talking about “smothering” Trump and Carson with love for the benefit of the media and the public and doing so in a meeting he thought was “private” just doesn’t gell with that nice Christian picture you paint.

What did Cruz ever do to you, or what evil thing do you thing he did which un-qualifies him? Trump has done far worse, such as supporting the Kelo decision than anything Cruz could have done.

If you are looking for a perfect candidate, the last one got killed by government.

Get a grip! You have clearly lost your perspective. No one is saying Cruz is “evil”. Cruz is simply another Washington politician with donors who are his owners and he must, to an extent, act as they want.

No, Donald Trump is not the perfect candidate. Neither is Cruz. Donald Trump just happens to be the only candidate that stands on his own word and his own merit, warts and all. That’s why so many people like him even though he doesn’t exactly fit the Conservative mold. America hasn’t seen anyone like that in many a decade.

I liked Cruz just fine as a second choice until I listened to him in a meeting that he thought was “private” chuckling with his owner/donors about “smothering” Trump and Carson with love and bear hugs” so that when both were brought down by his campaign, their supporters would fall to him. It put a whole new face on Evangelical Ted, I can tell you that. I’m sure both Trump and Carson would tell him to save his smothering and bear hugs.

I also would like for you to post some of Ted Cruz’ platforms and what he thinks about immigration, border control, his solutions for our terrorism threat and any others that make you such a staunch supporter of his. Donald Trump has laid out his stances on all these matters in no uncertain terms. Please itemize.

“I was thinking all of this is quite interesting that this audio was released very close to the next debate.”

Oh, how I wish. If everyone could hear Ted Cruz chuckling with his owner/donors about “smothering” Carson and Trump with love and giving them “big bear hugs” in public, it would unmask the Washington game player in Ted Cruz.

Unfortunately, that part of the tape has been buried because it’s too hard or even impossible to spin when you hear Ted in his own words. It’s not an attack on anyone; it simply sheds a glaring light on the public Ted vs. the fund raising Ted. I’m sure that that part of the tape has been buried somewhere forever or destroyed.

“His public bear hugs that he talked about giving to Trump and Carson, yet bad mouthing them behind their backs is not going to sit well with voters.”

As has been said here already, that tape in its entirety should be played over and over. However, the remarks about the bear hugs and smothering has probably been buried forever. Ted Cruz’ tone when he said those things on that tape immediately repulsed me because I’m done with smarmy politicians. Cruz’ tone and the appreciative chuckles coming from his owner/donors was offputting to say the least.

"Banning a religion is the wrong way to go about it."

Has FR been invaded by teenagers educated at government schools?

Just because something is called a "religion" does not mean we are obligated to accommodate here in the USA. Do we have to accommodate the Mesoamerican religion? How about Voodoo? If the values of the religion in question are incompatible with our societal values then of course we can ban it. Jeez
