Republican presidential contenders have largely called for increases in surveillance in the wake of terrorist attacks in Paris and California. But they also argued Sunday that one U.S. surveillance tool -- the government's no-fly list -- can't be trusted as a tool to bar gun purchases.
Several GOP candidates for the 2016 presidential nomination argued against a Democratic push to bar members of the no-fly list from buying firearms during appearances on Sunday news shows, saying that list is too broad. Just one -- Donald Trump -- said they were willing to consider the move.
"The majority of the people on the no-fly list are often times people that just basically have the same name as somebody else who doesn't belong on the no-fly list. Former Sen. Ted Kennedy once said he was on a no-fly list. There are journalists on the no-fly list," Florida Sen. Marco Rubio told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union."(continued)

Rubio is an idiot. The majority of people on the no-fly list are foreigners in foreign countries that we don’t want anywhere near America. It is not only wrong to deprive Americans of their right to buy a gun based on a bureaucratic list but it’s wrong going in the other direction too.
If we tighten up the parameters of the no-fly list to the point that you have to have committed a felony to be put on it it will be useless for its intended purpose. Keeping shady foreigners with possible terrorist ties out.
“The majority of the people on the no-fly list are often times people that just basically have the same name as somebody else who doesn’t belong on the no-fly list”
Then what’s the point of having a no fly list?
Aren’t Cruz and Rubio in charge of oversight of the DHS? Seems to me that they have done a lousy job.
no need to, the 5th Amendment says it all.
Less than 5% of the names on the no-fly list are Americans.
Several reasons that can get you on the no-fly list.
1) Terrorist links (not sure what is a link? Visiting a radical website? Like Free Republic?)
2) Drug Use
3) Mistake made by FBI
4) Similar/same name as someone else
5) Twitter post or other public media post
The one argument that could be made regarding a no fly list for airplanes is that the airplanes are owned by private companies - and they should be allowed to ban whoever they want to from flying on their planes. Of course that isn’t how the no-fly list is looked at.
List of other reasons:
Oh - as if you couldn’t tell - unless you are going to try to fly somewhere on your firearm (flierarm?) - the no-fly list should not have anything to do with guns.
Although it may sound reasonable - it isn’t. Lots of other restrictions on firearms might seem reasonable at first blush, such as banning “assault weapons”.
Oh - here is Trump in his book “The America We Deserve (year 2000):
“The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions. I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.”
The no fly list is a joke, at least as now run. Fox news reporter Stephen Hayes was put on it along with lots of other innocent folks. I trust that after due consideration Trump will decide that taking away citizens 2nd amendment rights without due process is a bad idea.
Rubio was trying to pander, and in trying to pander common sense went out the window.
IF the No-Fly-List worked properly then I sure as hell don’t want those people anywhere near a firearm.
The problem again is our federal government. What should work doesn’t. And I can see an argument of someone like Obama using a no-fly-list/no-gun-list for a lot of evil...
With that said we need to protect ourselves. The enemy ain’t at the gates their inside!
As long as ALL NO FLY list names are Muz
But they’re not.
Neither one serves on a committee that oversees homeland security, Look it up.
Almost anything is a felony, these last few years. The no-fly list is a prerequisite to being banned from interstate travel, much less overseas travel from the United States. It has no effect on foreign travelers, to the US.
What are you talking about?
I can’t imagine this issue would sway 10 votes.
we are gong to get every possible scenario and question thrown at republicans to either hurt one the press doesn’t like, or to keep viewers watching.
Next question will be should people who score 12 or more on the Glascow test at time of injury be allowed to carry firearms when they get better?
silly.
Stripping someone of their constitutional rights should be as difficult for one as it is for all. By that, I mean it should be as difficult to prevent one from buying a gun as it would be to prevent them from buying a book or newspaper.
The problem with the current no-fly list is that there is not sufficient means of redress. Once on the list, it becomes excessively problematic to remove oneself from that list. One can be added to the list on mere suspicion. This would create a dangerous means of stripping a person of their rights based upon a whim.
“I canât imagine this issue would sway 10 votes.”
I think you are right.
Notice: Trump said he would ‘consider’ not that he’d do it. My guess it is not something he’d thought about before being asked.
Aye, laddie. They cannae do else.
American citizens have been denied free access to flying because of Federal charges against them
Those charges, some deserved, some not (like a man accused and acquitted of child abuse, f'rinstance), have resulted in (because it's a Fed charge) a name being put on the list and it almost never comes off
There's a whole discussion surrounding secion 215 of the Patriot Act
To me the no-fly list is an arbitrary compilation of fears (or other purposes) formalized in an extra-legal fashion. Often, all it takes is some bureaucrat somewhere to add one’s name. Make an overly conservative comment on a website and get on the list, potentially. Nope, not even.
If they want to curb stuff like this keep non-citizens from being able to buy guns. Add another question to the Form 4473 about any kind of VISA or resident-aliens in the home.
I agree. It is punishment without trial or evidence.
The federal government has no warrant to control guns. They are, in fact, specifically prohibited from doing so. It’s time they were reminded of this fact.
