Republican presidential candidate Sen. Lindsey Graham (SC) said in an interview with CNN on Tuesday that fellow candidate Donald Trump has tapped into the "dark side" of the GOP.
Graham was explaining how his rival has managed to dominate the Republican presidential race, polling as high as 35 percent depending on the survey. Graham said the support still represented a minority of the GOP.
Twenty-five percent of our party that probably thinks Obama was born in Kenya or wants to believe that. Theres 25 percent of our party wants him to be a Muslim because they hate him so much," Graham said. "So, theres a dark side of politics that Mr. Trump is appealing to."
Graham initially used the interview to defend his dismal poll numbers in his home state, South Carolina, but pivoted into a more specific attack on the GOP frontrunner. He said a Trump nomination would "kill" the GOP.
"The leader of our party has come up with a deportation plan that is Joseph McCarthy-like and he is saying things about Megyn Kelly and other women that are digging a big hole. And the chairman of our party said Trump was a net positive. Let me tell you, I think he's hurting our party."
He also said Trump's plan to get rid of birthright citizenship was constitutionally unsound.
"He's shallow. He's ill-prepared to be commander in chief," Graham said. "He doesn't know what he's talking about in terms of how our laws work. He says the worst things possible about immigrants and women. And he's a complete idiot about Mideast policy."
Trump's strategy to defeat the Islamic State terrorist group, he said, was worse than President Obama's, a strategy with which Graham has repeatedly voiced discontent.
Graham used some of his Southern charm to end the interview: "Come to South Carolina. I'll beat his brains out."
Republican party is already dead thanks to people like Mr.Graham.
“Graham chalked Trump’s lead up to a “dark side of politics that Mr. Trump is appealing to.””
Hmmm. On the other hand, apparently Graham appeals to the light, squishy, jello pudding pops RINO side of politics, and Trump’s supporters are now not only low information voters, but are also minions of Darth Vader to boot!
BTW, Lindsey, are you simply one more designated GOPe get-Trump hitman, or do you really think that the things you are saying about Trump will convince anyone to switch from Trump to you? Sounds more like a GOPe hitman to me,
“Dark Side” is a subliminal, racist, micro-aggression!
Graham appeals to the those of politics that think Conservatives are evil
Graham appeals to Team Lavender.
Truly amazing how GOP establishment figures such as Graham and Jeb can openly diss the Republican base. I can’t imagine a Democrat doing that about Democratic voters. No wonder the GOP is such a failure as a party.
frustrating.
At least Slick Willy deliberately created the appearance of being a Christian by arranging all those Sunday morning photo ops with that big ol’ Bible in his hands.
Since he got elected, Sheik Obama hasn’t even tried to keep the illusion of being a Christian alive.
He didn't even provide a trigger warning. What an oppressor!
Has Linda come out of the closet yet and declared as a Log Cabin Republican? Prolly not, wouldn’t go over well in SC.
Prove he’s not...
OK, that's why he supports the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
The Islamicists in Turkey.
The Rebels in Syria.
ISIS in Iraq.
HAMAS against Israel.
Hizbollah against Israel.
Iran, against the West.
OK, I guess he is a full-fledged Christian then, right?
He’s such a parody of himself at this point, the article almost sounds like satire.

You make a good point; my theory is that people like Graham or McCain know they can get media face time and a pat on the top of their heads if they viciously attack conservative Republicans. Jeb Bush made the mistake of making this approach the cornerstone of his campaign, along with support for illegal immigration. Whatever consultant told him these were winning positions for the primaries was out of his mind; belittling 80 percent of the party and advocating positions that almost no one in the base wants but which the Chamber of Commerce pushes because it wants ever cheaper labor at the expense of the middle class ain’t going to work. The result: Mr. Bush is around 7 percent in the polls.
