NY Times, Sane People Struggle To Understand Donald Trump's Appeal
Gothamist ^ | August 23, 2015 | Ben Yakas

Donald Trump is a racist, sexist hypocrite who doesn't understand the economy (or basic math) and probably doesn't have anything resembling an inner life—but the man sure can put on a good show! Good enough that thousands of people who get off on the xenophobic, hate-filled subtext of his blathering will pack half a stadium to watch his combover blow in the wind. Which leaves one question for the sane among us: why is a television punchline appealing to people now?

Pro-Trump Twitter is such a weird place

The NY Times grappled with that question this weekend, and came up with some possible, but somewhat unsatisfactory, answers. In interviews with voters in Michigan and New Hampshire after Trump events, they found that no one cited his policies as motivation for backing him. Mostly, they like the fact that he has a brash personality.

His support is not tethered to a single issue or sentiment: immigration, economic anxiety or an anti-establishment mood. Those factors may have created conditions for his candidacy to thrive, but his personality, celebrity and boldness, not merely his populism and policy stances, have let him take advantage of them.

Tellingly, when asked to explain support for Mr. Trump in their own words, voters of varying backgrounds used much the same language, calling him “ballsy” and saying they admired that he “tells it like it is” and relished how he “isn’t politically correct.”

Trumpism, the data and interviews suggest, is an attitude, not an ideology...

For someone who doesn’t understand the economy, he sure does know how to use it to his advantage.

I should know that little about economics!

The insanity of the Trump faction is that they have failed to succumb to the Siren song of Progessivism. Doesn’t anybody remember Star Trek?

Trump is appealing to people now because he will not crawl into the politically correct box the NY Times and the rest of the liberal media has kept politics and politicians in for years. He has a spine and refuses to grovel before the liberal press and letting them write the rules to suit their narrative.

Maybe we can get a few more of the wimps in Washington to notice that playing by their rules doesn't get their support or the support of their readers because they still hate you and everything you stand for regardless of the bone they throw you for being a good dog and not barking to much.

Have you guys forgotten about 1964?”

Looks like I have. Was a bit busy then, working full-time, had two babies under two years of age and going to college three nights a week. We were having our family Thanksgiving dinner when Kennedy was killed. We lived in Kansas at the time and other than trying to understand why some of my high school friends were going off to a far away land called Vietnam to fight a war for unknown reasons, politics didn’t have much of an impact one way or other on our lives.

I was four years old. The assassination is one of my earliest memories.

You’re just a mere baby. LOL. My folks didn’t have a TV and a neighbor drove over and told us to turn on the radio. Sad day.

What these people need to understand--and should struggle to understand--is truth and reality, the very things they struggle hardest to avoid.

Yep - most interesting for me too. This juped out: The NY Times grappled with that question this weekend, and came up with some possible, but somewhat unsatisfactory, answers. In interviews with voters in Michigan and New Hampshire after Trump events, they found that no one cited his policies as motivation for backing him. Mostly, they like the fact that he has a brash personality.

I wonder how much they had to fudge/edit/delete in order to come up with "brash personality" as the only reason folks are backing Trump...

‘64?

It’s not so much forgetting, but more of not being even aware of it.

I was 5.

Here is some news for Ben Yakas, the author.

Many people, Trump supporters or not, rightly believe that YOU & your ilk are the racist, sexist hypocrites, & the direction you have led us is DOWN.

Based on the last 2+ decades of decline under Democratic & RINO leadership, it is clear that you people are the problem & people like Trump are the only solutions around.

You think we are insane but the results of your solutions are a weaker, divided, more dangerous country. It is YOU that is insane, or at least horribly wrongheaded.

Jeepers, the reason Trump resonates seems pretty obvious.
The American people are thoroughly disgusted with the corrupt D.C. political establishment elites and the lying lame stream media which are seen as destroying the nation, and both of which are trying to also destroy Trump but they are failing epically.
Instead, with each failed attempt Trump appears stronger.

Disclaimer: Trump is not my #1 candidate, Cruz is (don't the two seem to have an "understanding"?), but what conservative could not enjoy what Trump is doing to the GOPe and the lame stream media right now?

Quite agree.

I am not aware of having signed up for any commitment to HAVE a #1 candidate. Now or ever. And along the lines of what you said, I am very happy this has turned into a piece of entertainment instead of the constant worry as to exactly which member of the grifter elite will take his or her turn at the chopping block ripping the life out America as best he/she can.

There is no “hate” in Donald Trump on these issues. He is just saying we should enforce existing law. Why does this writer hate the US?

He thinks we are "past all that" - that law is a tool to advance The Agenda, and should not be enforced in a regressive way that destroys the "inner lives" of the crimmigrants. :)

What they are really pissed about is they don't have enough dirt on Trump to destroy him

I like the way he talks about how rich he is. This takes it off the table for the dems, because they can't spew the "he's too rich" line the way they normally do. Trump wants folks to know what a money machine he is. They can't stand it. No playbook to deal with the Trump.
