With the GOP poised to take over the Senate and strengthen its control of the House in January, all eyes are now turning to 2016's presidential race. And while Democrats have a single strong contender - paging Hillary Clinton - the Republican side remains up in the air.
The Hill recently listed what 16 possible presidential contenders in what one strategist described as the "most open field we've ever seen."
Here's the likely contenders in the class of 2016:
First String
Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) - One of the most recognizable names in the field, Paul he's comfortable in front of the camera and has the policy chops to back it up. It helps to be seen as a somewhat of an outsider, too.
Gov. Chris Christie (N.J.) - Christie is still a name to be reckoned with even as his image has taken hits from his own home state.
Former Gov. Jeb Bush (Fla.) - There's no better name recognition than "Bush." He has the family legacy on his side, but faces tough questions from GOP stalwarts on his immigration stands....

Louis Gohmert
The one most likely to win. We can’t afford a liberal Democrat in office for the next 4-8 years.
Oh my...could you imagine. Ted Cruz/Trey Gowdy or a Ted/Palin ticket. Hell, draft Gowdy and Atty General. Then let the dogs loose on the previous admin.
He sounds extremely impressive in any public interview. In addition to his conservative appeal, he sounds knowledgeable on any domestic and foreign policy issue I have heard him discuss.
I doubt he will ever get the nomination, assuming he wants it. The interviews I have heard can't even be called trial balloons, and I haven't heard that he has even explored putting together his organization. It's getting late for that if he wants to make a serious run.
The other three on this list will break my heart if they get the nod. I work fairly hard for my BPOU in my Senate District in Minnesota. My heart won't be in it if we have to start trying to help one of those other three.
The one guy I could get enthusiastically behind, who has started the feeler process, is Ted Cruz.
Cruz is my choice. :-)
Scott Walker. A governorship is good and he has proved himself. I like Cruz, too. His Hispanic background would help with those votes.
Dr. Carson is a plus for us, but his demeanor is too soft. Maybe VP? But is that racist of me to have him attract the black vote? That is not why I like him, but he would get the attention of black voters.
Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz!
Cruz has rocketed up since Freepres started weighing in.
Walker for President, Cruz for Supreme Court justice.
“Cruz sounds decent, but his Canadian birth will cause problems.”
If it’s true his father fought with Castro, I would expect that to become an issue as well. And, at least for me, his wife serving as VP for Goldman Sachs is an issue. You don’t get more NWO elite than Goldman.
A leftwing big govt liberal who’s a great personable speaker?
We had one in the 90’s - Slick Willie Xlinton...and we have another one now.
So you’re OK supporting a leftwing, big govt liberal/RINO?
Obviously, you are....sheesh!
McCain and George Romney were born outside of the U.S., Cruz being born while his mom was working in Canada, won’t be a problem.
I think Cruz’s Southern Baptist minister father who fled Cuba and is a rabid anti-Castro Hispanic, will be an asset, not a hindrance, he is very eloquent on his experiences with the Castro regime and Godless Communism.
Citing Rino’s places of birth and subsequent treatment by lib media does not inspire confidence.
Cruz has publicly outed himself as a conservative, the media WILL make an issue of his birth and his chances will be seriously damaged. IMO
Trey Gowdy, Veep
On my list as Attorney General,Jeanine Ferris Pirro.
First job Indictment and conviction of Eric the Red Holder!
I don’t understand why some people love Huckabee. I know he is charming on his show, but it is a show, scripted in the general sense. He isn’t honest. My number one beef is that he lies when he doesn’t even need to. It’s a bad trait.
Also, while I love Christianity and what it does for true believers, I hate when people CLOAK themselves in it for ulterior purposes. Our religions are to be followed to make us better. To put us closer to the Golden Rule which is the best we can behave in this world. Huck doesn’t do that. He wears it to imply he is better than he is.
The worst example of him lying was the most ridiculous thing, and to me and my over educated brain, shows signs of emotional problems deep in the man. Remember his beautiful Christmas ad during the presidential campaign? He is there talking about putting politics aside and remembering the reason for the season, standing next to a beautiful Christmas tree, bookshelf behind him? GREAT IDEA from his campaign, and he did a great job in it.
As he steps closer to the tree (this is from memory so I might have something wrong), the post and one shelf of the bookcase glow in the shape of a cross. It’s so strong it isn’t subliminal, it just IS. I thought it was very pretty and probably meaningful to Christians out there. Well, when old Huck heard people talking about that “effect,” in a mean, mocking tone, he told people to simmer down, “ITS ONLY A BOOKSHELF.”
There were 99 good ways to respond to the talk about the cross, but that wasn’t one. He could have said how neat he thought that effect would be, that he planned it. Because it was neat, I’m sure, for Christians. And not offensive in the least to other religions because this was for CHRISTMAS, for gosh sakes. He could have said that it was indeed accidental, but when he saw it, he said, let’s keep it in! Cool! But he MOCKED PEOPLE who saw the obvious glowing cross.
He abused his post as governor to pardon or excuse his own son’s horrific crime of hours of torturing a stray puppy before hanging it to death, all in front of a group of campers. I believe the som was over 18.
He let out a murderer on clemency who moved to a new state and killed cops.
I won’t go on. I just hope that Huckabee fans are ok with the above.
I have to wait until I get marching orders from the GOPe before I can make my choice. They know who’s best for me...
