With the GOP poised to take over the Senate and strengthen its control of the House in January, all eyes are now turning to 2016's presidential race. And while Democrats have a single strong contender - paging Hillary Clinton - the Republican side remains up in the air.
The Hill recently listed what 16 possible presidential contenders in what one strategist described as the "most open field we've ever seen."
Here's the likely contenders in the class of 2016:
First String
Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) - One of the most recognizable names in the field, Paul he's comfortable in front of the camera and has the policy chops to back it up. It helps to be seen as a somewhat of an outsider, too.
Gov. Chris Christie (N.J.) - Christie is still a name to be reckoned with even as his image has taken hits from his own home state.
Former Gov. Jeb Bush (Fla.) - There's no better name recognition than "Bush." He has the family legacy on his side, but faces tough questions from GOP stalwarts on his immigration stands....

Why did you list 1 gentleman who belongs in the Cabinet rather than the Oval Office; and 3 losers, none of which would get my vote?
For my money it’s Ted Cruz.
...though I think a FR dream ticket might look something like this:
Yes I like Huckabee. I thought I only had 4 choices because I carelessly only read the first part. Seeing all 13, I like Huckabee, Cruz, Perry for sure. Many I do not like at all. A couple I do not know enough about.
I know there are some Huckabee haters around. I am not one of them. I think he’s great.
Pat Paulson died in 1997, Ron Paul is the closest we have had to him since then.
I didn’t list anything. The reporterette did that.
NONE OF THE ABOVE!
Cruz is my preference.
Or maybe, I’ve upped my standards. Up yours! (Snicker-snort).
Trey Gowdy.
CRUZ!!!
He can outwit and out talk the proggie libs, cutting them off at the pass.
Tea Party Conservatives 4EVER!
I’m a great fan of him in many ways, but president? No!
Gowdy for VP
Rand Paul has the baggage of his father;
Bush will engender visceral hatred by libs and massive turnout by libs.
Cruz sounds decent, but his Canadian birth will cause problems.
Don’t know anything about Carson.
The others are meaningless (to me at least).
Rick Perry
Huckster is a pro-life, big govt liberal.
No thanks!!!!
Yep. Mine, too.
The one thing Carson is lacking is the CV.
Can’t believe in this paper’s poll, Cruz is down with Huckabee. Paul, who was fed all his life from the milk of antisemitism? And thinking of another Clinton Bush election makes me want to swear all the bad words I know. And make up some new ones.
I rip people a new one around here for staying home and not voting. If we end up with Bush vs Clinton HOW CAN I GO TO THE POLLS? What is the [expletive laden adjectives] point????
He is not a big government liberal. He is the one who started the “Tax Me More Fund” for liberals to voluntarily give more in taxes since they are always in favor of raising taxes.
Ted Cruz!
Ted Cruz hands down my first choice. Second would be Palin, Rand Paul, Rick Perry, Huckabee.
Not sure there is anyone else out there I’d support.
Another good thing about Huckabee is that he is a great and personable speaker. It is high time we had one of those again.
