Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) continued his efforts to expand the GOPs reach ahead of 2016 on Friday, appearing for an interview on HBOs Real Time with Bill Maher.
Maher, an outspoken anti-theist and liberal, said that he admires Paul for being the one Republican who is willing to go to places Republicans dont usually speak.
Throughout the interview, Paul and Maher were largely in agreement on issues such as the War on Drugs, reinstating voting rights for nonviolent felons, how the U.S. should go about defeating the Islamic State and even, to some extent, climate change.

I am available to the Rand Paul campaign, Maher said of a potential 2016 presidential bid.
But the comedian warned that some of the broader GOPs positions on issues like climate change would likely be enough to turn off potential Paul progressives.
Paul, whose district is seated in coal country, pushed back, noting that liberty would give average people more ability to help the environment than burdensome regulations.
[There is] abundant evidence that carbon is increasing and has been increasing, Paul said. All that I ask for is that the solution has to be a balanced solution, and that you have to account for jobs, and jobs lost by regulation. And Im not against regulation, I think the environment has been cleaned up dramatically through regulations on emissions as well as clean water over the last forty or fifty years.
The senator also noted that hes currently working on legislation that would get the government out of the way of people looking to use alternative fuel sources.
Its going to be called The De-Regulation of Alternative Fuels [bill], Paul said.
Im trying to get the government out of the way of converting your trucks from diesel to natural gas or from gasoline to ethanol.
The bill, Paul continued, will allow the market to help the environment.
Some of these fuels are actually cheaper too, Paul explained. And if theyre cheaper, then people will go for a cheaper alternative that also is cleaner for the environment.
Theres plenty of strategic benefit to Pauls continued efforts to appear before audiences that his GOP colleagues usually ignore as the GOP looks to capitalize disillusioned Democratic voters leading into the 2016 season.
The youth-oriented news outlet Vice illustrated how traditionally Democratic young voters could skew right in 2016 in a piece titled You Might Be a Republican in 2016.
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told the magazine that polling numbers make it clear that theres a libertarian streak thats running through young people. And the Republican Party is poised to capitalize on this, if were smart.
The GOP establishments blessing of a Paul candidacy has always seemed like a bit of a long shot. But the senators outreach efforts combined with the partys slow march to realizing that its policy have long turned off young people, minorities and all manner of independents could be creating a perfect storm for Paul 2016.

I’ll vote for anyone who will actively seek to shut-down the Federal Reserve.
Do that, and you kill the progressive nanny state root and branch. 1000 other conservative things will then naturally take bloom.

Ugh - just the thought of Maher makes me gag. But the article did make me realize a way to reach out to young men - point out that dems only care about women and minorities so white males are getting the shaft from the democratic party. If they want jobs, health care, and liberty, they should vote conservative Republican

Rand Slams Congress for Funding Egypt's Generals: 'How Does Your Conscience Feel Now?'Sen. Rand Paul is hammering his fellow senators for keeping billions in financial aid flowing to Egypt's military -- even as Cairo's security forces massacre anti-government activists. Rand Paul On Shutdown: "Even Though It Appeared I Was Participating In It, It Was A Dumb Idea"I said throughout the whole battle that shutting down the government was a dumb idea. Even though it did appear as if I was participating in it, I said it was a dumb idea. And the reason I voted for it, though, is that it's a conundrum. Here's the conundrum. We have a $17 trillion debt and people at home tell me you can't give the president a blank check. We just can't keep raising the debt ceiling without conditions. So unconditionally raising the debt ceiling, nobody at home wants me to vote for that and I can't vote for that. But the conundrum is if I don't we do approach these deadlines. So there is an impasse. In 2011, though, we had this impasse and the president did negotiate. We got the sequester. If we were to extend the sequester from discretionary spending to all the entitlements we would actually fix our problem within a few years.

Rand Paul: Time for GOP to soften war stance...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.

Rand Paul's immigration speech...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.
Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.
Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.
Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.
If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...
This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.
Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reformLatinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told the magazine that polling numbers make it clear that theres a libertarian streak thats running through young people. Now, That cracks me up.
How much did they spend on a poll to tell them that young people want fewer rules?
The demographic to watch, the one changing, is the older people who want fewer rules, too. When more mature adults are getting buried in petty and often conflicting regulations maybe it is time to stop writing more rules.

Rand Paul is a freak of political nature. Remember when all the leftist media swooned before the mighty moderation of McCain, only to stab him in the back during the general election? Rand is getting the same treatment. He is a useful tool for the left.

Could it be that Bill is getting old enough to have an adult brain? Let’s hope so. I wasn’t too impressed with his juvenile brain.
To: 2ndDivisionVet
Bill Maher was a libertarian that drifted away in recent years because of it’s recent emphasis on money issues instead of social issues, Rand Paul may be the man who brings him back to it.
