Why do Indian Americans Support Obama?
The Wall Street Journal's India Real Time ^ | June 3, 2012 | Visi Tilak

An overwhelming 85% of Indian Americans support Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election, according to a poll conducted earlier this year. The results of the study, which were published in early May, also revealed that only 67% of Indian Americans polled voted for Obama in 2008.

Mr. Obama’s life story seems to resonate better than Mitt Romney’s with many Indian Americans. In the study, which was conducted by Lake Research Partners, on the question of Obama vs. Romney, the ratio was a staggering 76 to 8 in favor of Mr. Obama.

Mr. Obama has shown strong support for Indian Americans, appointing them to some of the highest offices and continuing to laud the contribution of Asian Americans, even though his outsourcing policies have raised eyebrows...

The same could’ve been said of the Irish, Italians and Jews in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Let’s at least give them a chance.

Really? Lucky you to have had that experience with Indians. Mine has been the opposite - working in Tech at a large financial institution, they were the slow minded and lazy. They made good Tiki masala tho.

They rule in Silicon Valley and have the highest levels of education and income of any ethnic groups in the US.

FRiends, get yourselves on over to “Bad Eagle.com’’ and meet Dr. David Yeagley, PhD., a Comanche Indian and true blue American patriot. (the Comanches are the second largest Indian tribe in America.) If this man could get a hold of Obama he’d scalp him and I’m not kidding. This man, this American Indian patriot HATES Obama. He hates Morris Dees too.

INDIAN American, Whites, Blacks, beaners, gays, evangelicals, Catholics, wasps, immigrants, democrats, republicans etc etc etc

When is it going to be just AMERICANS? All this divide and rule is the reason you have clowns like obama and romney.

I don’t understand, why is it people like Buzz Aldrin, a person who embodies what an American should aspire to, why is it someone like this can’t run for president?

Is there some law?

A lot of Indians listen to the alphabet news media and believe a lot of the lies that they say. They may be sympathetic to BHO because of what they know about the period of slavery. A lot of them have bought into the lies that Repubs are for very rich, white people. A lot of indian immigrants are not christians, and may feel that repubs may force christianity on them. A lot of the younger crowd think that being liberal is the cool thing, and for educated folks.

That being said, I find it hard to believe the 76 to 8 ratio. The republican party has some of the more prominent people of indian background- Bobby Jindal, Nikki Haley, and one of my personal favorites and an old timer from the Reagan administration, Dinesh D'Souza.

I am a naturalized American citizen born & raised in India. When I arrived here as a foreign student, I liked democrats better than republicans. Eventually it dawned on me that democrats were keeping me from moving up through middle class. Every time I received a pay raise, my tax bracket also received a raise! After acquiring citizenship, I have voted republican ever since. So it took over a decade for my transformation. Most people from India have been here for less than 20 years. If many are pro-Obama, it is probably a knee jerk reaction to vote for another minority block person.

As people mature and become prosperous, most will become more conservative. Those Indians who are here just to exploit benefits from government will continue to support democrats. But as a group, Indians are doing very well financially in US so I expect more turning republican and conservative, like myself.

In that respect Indians are not much different than other immigrants. I have to believe FDR was popular among new immigrants. When one is starting out on the bottom rung, it is very easy for one to fall for the rhetoric of democrats that they are for the little guy.

My co-worker is an Indian naturalized citizen. He states he’s an ‘Independent’. The thing I see is that he thinks he’s smarter than the average voter. He is also basically clueless on American values and history.

Not inconsistent. He most likely is smarter than the average voter and at the same time ignorant of American values and history, at least in their formal expression.

Immigrants are coming here for money, not to be Americans.

Nothing new about that.

What's new is America's willingness to be influenced. As opposed to influencing, by applying fire to the melting pot.

I think you just named all permanent democrat voting blocks if Irish means Catholic.

Sorry “Lurker” but I had to start somewhere. As usual, the premise is wrong. Indian, Irish, Slovenian or whatever, why does it matter? The real reason can never be told, otherwise it is “hate, political correctness, or something that “offends” someone.” Enough!!!!!!!!!

Originaly immigration meant that they came here to be Americans forever and for the freedom and opportunities.

Now they largely come purely for the money, many of them literally come solely for money, with plans to work, lock into the system and then move back home, and many of them are still foreign citizens combined with their American citizenship, some even vote in elections back home.

When someone is here to benefit from the system for the short term, for maximum profits and then leave, how do you think they vote?

When someone is resentful of Western ways, Western philosophy, Western religion, even the Western race, and could care less about their ideas and ideals, and whatever long term goals Westerners care about, or worse, think that they are evil, wrong, and misguided and need to be replaced to please their God and their man, and they only want to make money, how do you think they vote, what goals do you think they have in mind for traditional America and Western ideals, hint, to erase them and make them like home.
