Al D'Amato Likes Fred Thompson-Giuliani Ticket

In fact, even while saying his backing of Thompson "is not a personal repudiation of Rudy," D'Amato managed to make it clear Giuliani shouldn't set his sights too high. Perhaps he could be a vice president, the former senator suggested.

Geraldine Ferraro probably didn’t help Mondale because Reagan was so popular, no running-mate could have helped Mondale win. Mondale probably would have received more votes if his running-mate was someone who had more political experience and higher name recogntion. Before the 1984 election, the last five democrat vice presidents had been U.S. senators. They were Mondale, Humphrey, Johnson, Barkley, and Truman. If Mondale’s running mate was Edmund Muskie, who was a senator from Maine and secretary of state; or Pat Moynihan, who was an ambassador to the UN and senator from New York; Mondale probably would have received more votes than he did, although Reagan still would have won.

Except that Fred Thompson has said he is not at all interested in the VP spot. If he runs it will be for the top position. I would love to see a Thompson/Hunter ticket!

A good thing about Rudy in the No. 2 slot is that he’d be too old to run for office in 8 (really 10) years.

No fan of Rudy -— BUT he’s no lightweight -— AND he’d have crossover appeal. Yes, one heartbeat and all that, but that has happened, what, twice/three times in US history?

This is an old posting, but if you look at it analytically and historically, this idea makes sense. Remember, in 1988, Michael Dukakis’s choice of Lloyd Bentsen didn’t spur a third-party candidacy from the left, and Bentsen had ADA ratings of under 50%. Choosing Giuliani as a running mate would really enhance Thompson’s appeal in the Gore/Kerry states, and Thompson needs to pick off a few of them, as some of the Bush states (Ohio, Colorado, Nevada, and perhaps Virginia) could very well go Democratic next year.

At this point, I’d much prefer Giuliani given some Ambassadorship or to run for Mayor of NYC again in 2009.

Well, you can’t have Inhofe or Coburn. We need them to much. I could go for a Thompson-Romney OR a Thompson-Giuliani ticket, if I had to. I think Rudy or Romney would be an asset in the Senate. Hunter would be great, but I don’t think he’s a chance. Not enough folks here in the center of the country know him.

I, also, think either of the above named Republican tickets would beat Hillary/Obama, or whatever the final dim Dem nominee configuration might be.

Oh. Now, I like that. J.C. is a FANTASTIC guy, but the blacks would probably do him the same way they do Ms. Rice. .......And I’m not sure he has the name recognition necessary. It really kills me to say that since I know him so well. For what its worth, he’d carry Oklahoma!! Big time.

A good choice would be Jennifer Dunn. She was the chairman of the Washington State GOP, 1980-’92; and a conservative U.S. rep., 1993-2005. If she runs for VP, the Republican would probably win Washington’s 10 electoral votes.

The same could be said for Sue Myrick, easily the most conservative Representative from North Carolina, which has 15 electoral votes. She's not running for re-election in the House, but she's young enough for a next step.

Still, if I was betting, I'd put my money on Tim Pawlenty, Mark Sanford, J.C. Watts, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, or Michael Steele as my short list for potential Fred running mate, in that order, with Tommy Franks as a potential dark horse.

It would make sense for Rudy to be Thompson's running mate except for one thing. Contrary to popular wisdom, it's actually unusual for the VP nominee to be someone who actively ran for President for that same term. There have only been two since actual primaries began in the 70s, George H. W. Bush and John Edwards. Only one of them, Bush, mounted a truly serious challenge to the potential nominee.

I think it's more likely that the running mate of whoever is the nominee will be someone who isn't even in the current discussion for President. See my above post.

Thing is, Rudy has star power, as does Thompson. That would be helpful, given the political environment.
