[history]
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Public health interests prevailed over warnings that personal freedoms are being eroded as the Maine House gave its final approval to a bill to ban smoking in bars and taverns.
Representatives' 95-47 enactment vote sent the measure to the Senate and put Maine a step closer to joining California and Delaware in imposing statewide bans on smoking in bars. New York's ban starts in July, and Connecticut's newly enacted ban on smoking in bars takes effect next April.

''I don't think we're chipping away at people's rights as much as steering (CONTROLLING) them toward a more healthy lifestyle,'' said the Sanford Democrat.
When I read stuff like this I start to think seriously about moving to Mt. and building a bunker.

Does the state have the authority to make it illegal to smoke at all anywhere? If so, I don't see that too far away for NY or CA. If they do that, I hope so many people move out of those states that it really really hurts.Economically as well as socially, more freedom exists in Russia now than the good old USofA.
We are heading in the direction of the Soviet Union........did you ever think you would live to see in America.....
a department of Homeland Security?

Every smoker I've known is polite about not smoking next to anyone who requests they not do so unless they are in a smoking desgnated area and have no place else to go. In a bar it's different. You expect a bar to be smokey. That's how it's always been.First you claim smokers are considerate then you acknowledge that bars are smokey adn thats how its always been. You contradict yourself and prove that smokers are inconsiderate to nonsmokers by making bars smokey. BTW, 2/3 of the elected reps in Maine disagree with you.

No, they really belong in North Korea, Cuba, or someplace like France. That is the kind of mentality they have. They will fit right in! Amen to that, Becki. Amen! They have little tiny "me me me" minds.

And remember, he can smell cigarette smoke blown out of the window two cars ahead of him in a NY traffic jam with the windows up. I better pull MY coffee away from the keyboard. I, too, am laughing so hard I need a powder room break before I become a danger to my CHAIR. LOL!

You really think that twirps and birdbrains, physical cowards like you and the mushbrains down in Augusta or any other state capital have the right to engage in behavior modification?
You're scarier than I thought you were, needle d!ck.
I'm willing to bet that you and any two friends you'd care to pick couldn't modify my behavior. Better people than you, including the governments of three different states, have tried.

First, just because there is majority in vote of something is hardly proof that it is moral or legal. Slavery comes to mind, electing Bill Clinton twice does too, but that was a plurality.
Second, if there is a hell I hope you end up there surrounded by smokers for all of eternity. Now THAT would be poetic justice!

???..Think you missed some of my comments and especially the 'bumper sticker' after my name. You're right. I apologize. I responded from the "My Comments" page, and the tagline does not show up there.
It was the question that gave me the impression of your position.
Guess I'll check the live thread before answering from now on! ;^)

Sorry, but the Mad Russian doesn't work for everyone, you were ready but some probably aren't.
I've been to him twice,10 years apart, and realized,on the second visit that he is a "fake". I know many who have wasted their money on this millionaire who haven't quitsmoking.
There is a large Quit Smoking Industry and it is headed by the pharmaceutical companies.
I personally have made the decision to smoke until I die. I'm 70 years old,in good health, and raised five healthy non-smokers in a house full of smoke. My smoking, and that of my husband and most of our friends didn't do any harm to our kids, and we all had large families.

I *did* read the whole reply. The burning cigarettes & the red cross kinda says 'cause & effect' to me. LOL
I am in full agreement that business owners should be able to do as they please but they should do *one* or *the other*. Mixing smoking & non smoking sections like they have tried to do, doesn't work. Not for the non smoker it doesn't. That is the reason (IMHO) for the complete bans.

BTW, 2/3 of the elected reps in Maine disagree with you.BT W, 2/3 of the elected reps in Maine just voted to pretend private property rights don't exist. But as long as a majority voted that way, it's just fine with you.
This is the same legislature that's created the friendly business climate that's made Maine such an economic powerhouse.
To: honeygrl
What??!! No "hard science"? The legislator who helped get the Oklahoma smoking ban through was bitching because the businesses have 30 months to implement it, saying "every year we let it go, 750 more Oklahomans die from secondhand smoke." So, in that 30 months, smoking in public places will kill 2.5 X 750, or 1,875 non-smoking Oklahomans?? Spare me...
I'm not a smoker, but I do agree with you. I've seen the NS go sit at 'first come first served' tables near the bar in Outback Steakhouse, and BITCH about the smoke. Either wait in line like everyone else, or STFU.
There's a whole lot of POMA (Pulled Outta My Ass)algorithm statistics being thrown around on this second hand smoke nonsense.
