Catholic school reinstates lunch with Granholm
The Associated Press 2/18/03 7:40 AM
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- A Catholic school that rejected a donation by Gov. Jennifer Granholm over her support of abortion rights says it wants the gift after all.
Granholm is Catholic and says she opposes abortion but supports freedom of choice. The Catholic church opposes legalized abortion.
The governor had offered to have lunch at the Capitol with the winner of an auction Saturday supporting Mercy High School.
The all-girls school at first accepted the offer but reversed itself after some parents and alumnae complained.
Now, Mercy says it has changed its mind a second time and decided to accept Granholm's offer, The Oakland Press of Pontiac, Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News reported Tuesday.
The suburban Detroit school issued a statement Monday saying that the administration and trustees reconsidered the decision during the weekend.
"Our consideration last week to withdraw the item took into account the sensitivity of the issue and its potential impact on the welfare of our students," the statement said. "The topic has provoked much discussion and debate.
"We believe that providing Mercy students and mothers with the chance to meet with Gov. Granholm is a valuable educational opportunity and fully consistent with our school's philosophy, mission and values."
Granholm said Monday night that she was happy to provide the lunch and hopes the "few detractors" will respect Mercy's decision.
"I am and have always been supportive of Mercy High School," Granholm said in a news release. "It is unfortunate that a few people have been successful in putting that great institution in a difficult position."
A date for the lunch has not been set.
Members of the Stop Granholm Church and Truth Project have continually protested Granholm's support of abortion rights.
On Monday, it called on Detroit Cardinal Adam Maida to overturn the decision.
"We hope Cardinal Maida will take a courageous stand," the group's director, Monica Migliorino-Miller of South Lyon, said in a news release. "A Catholic school should not champion just any women. Racist women shouldn't be honored and neither should pro-abortion politicians" who flout Catholic teachings.
Megan Myers, a 17-year-old senior at Mercy, said she was pleased by the latest turn in the school's policy.
"It's good that it's back on. It's great that somebody now is going to have an opportunity to have lunch with such an intelligent woman," she said.
But 1975 graduate Rosemarie Denton expressed disappointment and said she will not send her daughter, a seventh-grader, to the school.
"Apparently the liberals have taken over, and they can have it," Denton said. "When you say you're a Catholic school, then you should abide by the teachings of the Catholic church."
Opponents said they would picket Saturday's auction, titled "A Night with the Stars."

Before the Imported Canadian Socialist ever took office, her publicist was quoted as saying:
1) She needed a clothing designer becuase the cloths on the rack weren't good enough for her
and
2)The citizens of Michigan needed to build a Mansion more in the Regal style of other States, because the Current one in not suited for raising a family. Arggggggggggggggg It's gonna be a long Governors term!
This from a reputedly intelligent woman? "Intelligent" like Hillary!, perhaps? That's not intelligent at all, its just plain stupid. Why is it unfortunate that a reputedly "great institution" should be put in a difficult position? If they're wrong, as they are in this case, they should be put in a difficult position (it's more accurate to say that they put themselves in a difficult position). Maybe they'll think the next time they try something stupid.
A couple of thousand years ago a few people, led by one, put a lot of "great" institutions in difficult positions. Then, as now, people had to choose who they would stand with. A Catholic school, of all institutions, should stand with those who choose life, and oppose those who choose to support wanton slaughter.

Touting her own religion and that of her husband's family while promoting abortion is soooo wrong.
Of course, an interesting sidenote is that she studied French at Berkeley, which explains much...

Ditto! And your note was not wasted. Someone noted on the previous post that Sr. was a bit disconcerted over all the media attention. She vascillated between "yes" and "no" ... perhaps tomorrow, after reading our notes, she'll let the "ney's" have it again.
You can't have it both ways. You can't oppose abortion and say its OK for other people to have an abortion. Either abortion is right, or it's wrong. If it's wrong, it's wrong for all. If it's right, it's right for all.
I'm saddened by these events. Lord, have mercy on us sinners.
So did I ......... where did you go to school, if you don't mind my asking?
As for Sr. Regina, last week she "made news" by removing the luncheon with Gov. Granholm from the auction. She was very surprised by the "media attention" and has now caved in to the pressure.
Love your note! I sent her one last week of total support. Guess I'll have to send a retraction.
And, there you have it .. Apparently the liberals have taken over, lead by Sr. Regina Marie. Here are some of the other items being auctioned off. Definitely not a typical middle class school. Check out Item #7. Cavier??? Sister, I believe the correct spelling is Caviar.

I just spoke with Cardinal Maida's spokesman in an attempt to clarify rumours that he would not interfere in the Mercy High School Auction.
The spokesperson states, "The Cardinal believes that this is a matter best resolved by the Mercy High School administration. The issue should be taken up with the High School's board of trustees and the Sisters of Mercy. The Cardinal himself regrets that the school has chosen to take this action and regrets any confusion this action may cause."
To which I respond, "The HMS Blog regrets that Cardinal Maida is such a gutless weasel." Please call the Cardinal and let them know your displeasure. Keep the phones ringing. (313) 237-5816
