Most people cringe at the sight of a pregnant woman smoking. Some people feel strongly enough to say something in protest. But one local man took matters into his own hands early Friday when, according to police, he shot an expectant mother who refused to put out her cigarette.

Not every story makes the news, and not every beating of a child to death by another child is about cigarettes.

No kidding.

But this murder is about cigarettes.

If I have the righ to bear arms, then I have the right to own a nuclear bomb - if you say no, then you are for gun control.

The old room-temperature-IQ argument...

You have the right to own a space shuttle too, but I doubt that your zoning laws would allow you to keep it parked at the curb.

What a moronic argument.

You take the uzi, SheLion. I'll have the .44 in my right hand and the AR-15 I want in the left (I can always slip the .44 into my waste to let loose with the AR-15 with both hands, of course).

"But this murder is about cigarettes."

This wasn't a murder. Mother and baby are going to be fine.

The point is that I find it pretty weird for somebody to get so upset that they would nearly shoot the victim, instead aim elsewhere, gun misfunctions, and then inadvertantly shoot the same person they resisted from murdering in the first place.

If the story is true, then it might be happenstance or perhaps the event was caused by another person.

In anycase, if I were smoking, when reports that smoking causes harm to the fetus, and this happened to me, I'd take it as a strong hint that just maybe the smoking position might not be so perfect.

Typical - the length of time someone is a member of FR has something to do with the validity of their comments? Not sure why you feel the need to get so angry. Back to the main point, I am all for people owning guns, but there needs to be a limit. If I have the righ to bear arms, then I have the right to own a nuclear bomb - if you say no, then you are for gun control.

Experience is a great teacher. After 4 years here, I've noticed that those with the shortest time here, say the most disruptive things.

There's a reason they call them 'Arms'. The intent of personal firearms, are those that can be handled by an individual. No one expects the right to own a team operated or vehicle mounted weapon.

As a veteran of the Nuclear Artillary, I have no expectation of owning and operating my own 155mm howitzer.

Your argument is old and has been tried before. From limits on nuclear weapons to howitzers, the gun grabbers have made an easy transition to assault weapons and ugly guns. Now California is banning .50 caliber small arms, although one has never been used in a CA crime.

Aren't your friends missing you at DU? I'm sure they would appreciate your lame arguments.

I am sure the pro-gun lobby was more concerned with the caliber of the weapon, the condition of the bullet, and if the guy would be exercising his 2nd amendment right to buy more weapons

NO, the pro-gun lobby, AS ALWAYS, is more concerned with people following the law. What part of Texas do you live in, Austin, Dallas or inside the loop in Houston?

So it is your position that she was shot as some kind of devine fate? - That perhaps God shot her?

This wasn't a murder. Mother and baby are going to be fine.

I should have made myself clearer.

I was talking about the 13-year old boy who was stomped to death.

Anyone comes around my 8 months preggers wife having a rare smoke when she's stressed to the bone and starts preaching about the evils of tobacco and I guess I'll have to shoot him/her on the spot premptively. I look forward to it...lol

Hmmmm....smoking while pregnant or shooting the mother? Which less harmful to the fetus? The life of this poor infant is off to a great start. </sarcasm off>

Read post #91... I could repeat it, but...

Don't ever let facts get in the way of your neuroses.

Mull on this too: why did 9 of the 10 longest-lived people of record still smoke at age 100?

Was this shooting deliberate or an accident.

It seems to have been a combination of both.

Was the strange man intent on harming the women?

We may never know.

Was the anger the man displayed towards the women uunjustified when you take into consideration the fact the smoking while pregnant contributes to birth defects, low birth rate, down syndrome, etc...

This is a loaded question on your part. The anger of the man toward this woman was without a doubt misdirected.

As to your assertions about smoking and its contribution various birth defects - the jury remains out on all of that. I've heard some crazy assertions of what maternal tobacco smoking does to the unborn child, but Down's Syndrome is NOT one of them.

Who will pick up the tab when this women delivers an unhealthy baby because she exercised her right to smoke, therby poisoning and injuring her unborn baby?

How do you know this child will be unhealthy? I smoked through my pregnancy and my 4 year old is as healthy as a race horse. And she is far smarter than some of her contemporaries. Please do not make generalizations based upon personal prejudices.

I have no problems with people smoking if that's what they want to do, but when it hurts somebody else, there has to be a trade off.

The only person hurt here was the pregnant woman who happens to be a smoker.

It's one thing to berate someone and qujite another to pull out a handgun and start busting caps.

What right does some stranger have to berate another adult engaged in a perfectly legal activity?

Why so angry?,br. Why the NRA fixation?

Your implications are clear.
Were you denied membership or something?

Making up facts makes you sound like a complete clown.
