Me: What is the purpose of the Department of Defense? You: To wage war.
No doubt. Although I think Constitutionally there mission should be to protect our borders and nation.

Wow, 213 posts later you're the first person to even try to answer that question. Thanks.
Actually I don't mind federalizing airport security. The way things are now all airports are a border, and borders are the job of the fed. Anyway I never liked that stuff going to low bidders and minimum wagers, just didn't sit right. Patriot act, I'm with you some good some bad. This looks like a reorg to me. I don't see any increase in power, no increase in budget, and maybe a handful of new employees. Hardly a government expansion.

Well, it would certainly be consistent with his Texas record of growing government. I don't know what's worse ... a Republican bloating the federal government ... or so-called "conservatives" defending it. If Bill Clinton were the one advancing Bush's Big Government agenda, you can be darn sure we'd be hearing some groans. But, it's okay when "our guy" is the one doing it. Can you say inconsistency? Hypocrisy?

There are presently 88 Congressional committees and sub-committees to "oversee" the agencies being consolidated into one. It is a laugh riot to think about the 88 present committee chairmen are going to decide which of them gets to be the only one standing.

No, DOD doesn't exist in the constitution. DOD is a department formed by the fed gov to do everything that they thought at that time would be part of national security. On 9-11 we found out that wasn't the whole pie.

Until sometime early in the 1900s (I think just before or after WWI) it was called/named the Department of War. It was renamed the Department of Defense via the National Security Act of 1947.
This was also when the US Air Force was established, and civilian secretaries were placed over the military brances. There were other changes, of course, but those seemed significant enogh to remember.

I disagree, they should not be a police force, they should be trained to wage war and kill our enemies which is why I love what Bush did tonight.

"Harry Truman recognized that our nation's fragmented defenses had to be reorganized to win the Cold War."This in NOT a "Cold War!" It's the HOTTTEST war this country has ever been in. It's being fought right here on our soil/pavement and the attack is coming from turds living in our punchbowl. The rhetoric "Axis of Evil" is not even pinning down a war of any kind against a sponsoring country beyond Afganistan.
9-11 dwarfed Pearl Harbor and was induced by Clinton, Clinton & Gore. Yet the man we demonstrated for to keep his election intact continues to retain their despicable people in positions of irresponsibility. Why wasn't the lawyer in the Federal Bureau of Incompetance that blocked that agent's memo FIRED? Why was he pensioned out of position like he'd done nothing wrong?
I'm not bashing my President in time of war! I have a right as a taxpaying citizen to question until I get satisfaction. Right now, I can't get any! Even his appearant backing away from that EPA report on Globular Warming got backed away from by Ari Flysher before Rush's show was even over yesterday. That's not a sign of a stable, consistent administration!!!

"Wanna be better protected, or not? Good God, man....
If you have hope that a larger, even more bloated government is the answer to our protection, we might as well begin to pass out the KOOL-ADE....

CNN has nothing on their web site near this title that was used but I suspect the following maybe the article..... UBE... did you just make up the title to suit your needs? I listened to the speech and gave it an appropriate title, I don't need CNN to define my views.

I consider you to be one of the most grounded posters on this forum and agree with you most times. But I'm starting to really wonder how far the Bush admin. is going to take things.Or, if not Bush, then the next Democrat -- armed as he or she will be, with all these new powers.
To: Ben Ficklin; UnBlinkingEye
Well the dishonesty of the poster is one thing but the fact that it stays up is great so that the dishonesty and agenda of the poster can be seen by all. That is a big plus, imo. Yep the malcontents will try anything including statements that aren't true or even close to the truth....

How did he "grow" government in Texas when he cut total welfare cases to 106,000 in a population of 30 million? Come on I am sure you can tell us Texans how bad we had it under GW. You surly have the facts since you made the charge. You wouldn't just pull something out of your A$$ to make a point would you?

It is a laugh riot to think about the 88 present committee chairmen are going to decide which of them gets to be the only one standing.Bush has the rats playing musical chairs and the shame of it is that there are so many professed "conservatives" unable to laugh about it.

"...and duhbya's solution is to throw more money at the problem." How much does your freedom cost?
Is freedom free?
The president spoke of realigning the agencies that already exist, and providing all classified security information to the Secretary of Homeland Security.
If you don't like the president, that's okay with me-just be honest aboput what he said.

Just because the expansion happened before tonight's speech, it can hardly be considered "not one drop."As you say, there was not one drop of expansion in tonight's speech, so the thread title is a lie, and the thread poster is a liar.

I don't need CNN to define my views.
Well it's obvious that CNN doesn't even stretch the true as much as you do.... so I agree they didn't define your views... But you watched CNN.... LOL
